I have been debating straight piping mine but the low RPM idle noise is not pleasant. Much better than a 4 cylinder engine though :). After owning a S60R I have vowed to never get another 4 cylinder engine again.
Tell him if he hasn't already to remove the insulation on the hood/bonnet. If only as a temporary thing to hear what the car actually sounds like. The difference is actually really impressive. The clips that hold it in just snap out so if he is careful it can be put back in good as new.
that is not a "normal s60" that is the s60 T5 and it actually has a stronger factory engine than the R, because the R has a 2.5l with thin cylinder walls that crack the T5s 2.3l engine can handle higher power more reliably when modified
@@GabrielGames100I used to own an S60 T5 and it's a better all round car than the R for daily driving.. You can chip it and get 275bhp for a couple of hundred quid.. To be honest you wouldn't want much more than that in a fwd T5 without spending quite a bit on uprating diff, suspension, braking etc..
One of the most underrated cars on the roads. As the car you are driving, it only needs a remap to be seriously fast. If you want a real highway killer...s60 T5 with some minor mods! Less drivetrain losses than in the s60R.
If you like that, you should try a Saab 9000 2.3T Aero, running Stage 3. 1.4 Bar Boost, and 100 in under 11 seconds. Standard 9000 Aero can be taken to over 400bhp with NO physical engine mods what so ever.
You can get 400bhp+ with the T5 engine as well without engine mods. The R, in fact, can get around 400bhp with an upgraded intercooler, exhaust, and software.
Just bough one of these, flash green, atacama leather and only 57k on the clock, shame its an auto but its still a beast, 8th volvo and definitely my best
Pedro Ramirez I'm not totally clued up on everything about them but mines an early one 2001 and seems sweet as. The early ones can suffer with auto gearbox failure due to a software fault but you can get it reprogrammed to stop it going into neutal and idle which prolongs the life. The 2.3 engine is stronger and it has thicker sleeves than the 2.4. But the 2.5 and 2.4 have slightly higher bhp. I'd go for a last of the first editions so a 2004 2.3 T5 high pressure turbo
+Barry Britcher T5M is the only one I'd get that wasn't R. after driving my buddy's 07R GT it definitely is a totally different beast than the regular S60
Its not that heavy Sure the AWD makes it heavy but the grip you get from it makes it a rocket. I got my self a 2.5T sadly not AWD and its only at 210HP but still does good against a lot of BMW who are lighter and has over 100 HP more than me .... The problems with BMW is they´re hard to get down all that HP Into ground....
@@jakehennessy7 I agree, most who touts understeer are usually those who are used to driving RWD cars. Have an S40 and it's quick easy to cure understeer just by changing driving style alone.
It is about 150kg ish heavier (maybe 100 kg). Base S60 are already pushing 1.6 tonnes while base mercs and BMW c klasse and 3 series are around 1.4-1.5 tonnes. This needs at least 350bhp to match the high end, but a free flow dp and better mapped ecu will allow good flow at high end.
ams0001 yeah I remember that day was a good turn out . I got some nice pics of ours cars to. when you seen the car is only had a remap , it now has a powerflow cat back and a piper cross air filter . just want to say thanks again to bond for the awesome review .
When the money is right.. I will be looking for and buying either this car or a 1999 Mercedes Benz C43. Im still in the process of researching both cars because i want to know which car is cheaper on maintenance fees.. that right there will actually determine which car i will buy more likely? (i really love the '99 C43.. but wow and damn..! this S60 R is sexy too!)
I met Roy at Ace Cafe London for a Volvo meet. I have the same car in black and we took some superb photos. Do you know if this car has the stock exhaust or aftermarket
Each measured s60r did not have more than 280hp at the engine, instead of the factory data of 300hp. Which is of course not very impressive with the vehicle weight.
+Go H. I can only put it down to the floor being uneven. I only use these scales for the kerb weight rather than corner weight, but thank you for mentioning it.
+Explosive Idiocy Hi, I don't test car accelerations from 0-60 as this means launching the car and potentially damaging components. I do the test from 10-60. This should level the playing field as it eliminates most of the wheel spin and my ability to launch a car can differ everytime 😊
that inline 5 exhaust note alone makes it worth buying
I agree, it does sound pretty good.
Cathexis256 it's like a baby v10
Sounds even better when it's straight piped, then you gets all the pips and bangs, and also actual fire
I have been debating straight piping mine but the low RPM idle noise is not pleasant. Much better than a 4 cylinder engine though :). After owning a S60R I have vowed to never get another 4 cylinder engine again.
My gf told me, to forget about old sportcars and get a volvo... so im getting the v70r this weekend ^^
as an S60R owned can confirm it's the best car you never knew about.
I seriously did not know about the S60R until my friend bought one. It's so good!

phiberoptick is 83k miles on this car too much/still worth purchasing?
XXX Vert dude it's a Volvo. It will last forever if you take care of it. Do it!
the golf v5 is crap compared to this
Very good, thorough review ! A most under appreciated car the S60 R ! Fantastic car with a mountain of tuning potential !
Many thanks 😊
just bought a normal 2003 s60 with a 2.3l high-pressure turbo (247hp) next car 305hp volvo s60R!!

@@tollyt7465 im actually quiet happy with the horsepower now that ive driven it for a while just need to fix the interior flooding when it rains lol
m8 why you driving with bright yellow gloves?
Just a way to differentiate myself from other RUclipsrs
Maybe wear a bright yellow balaclava as well.
e46 m3 killer. The s60 and v70r have so so much potential to gain silly power without costing you the world, unlike the shirty m3
Lol... I am more surprised by the fact that Ford uses this same engine in their Focus RS.

+Mikael Vilund I totally agree with you after driving this Volvo. A serious sleeper car.
There are no more drivetrain losses at higher speeds. This is Haldex, awd does not work at higher speeds.
Love volvos. Just pure enjoyment to drive
I have an 06 s60r with a tune and bolt ons makes 360 brake horsepower love it
polish every week. That's real love
The owner really does polish it every week!
What a fucking dumbass, nice way to ruin your clearcoat overtime
You are not supposed to polish that often!

I would love to review something like that. If you know someone with those specs or even just the car, let me know :)
Recently sold mine. But ask on UKSaabs forum, im sure someone will lend you a car for a review.
only change gearboxes .-)))))
You can get 400bhp+ with the T5 engine as well without engine mods. The R, in fact, can get around 400bhp with an upgraded intercooler, exhaust, and software.
I have the same one... similar mods.... will be making about 400 after tune :)
That's awesome! What ECU and who will you be using to tune the car as the owner is looking to do the same thing but doesn't where to go.
Just bough one of these, flash green, atacama leather and only 57k on the clock, shame its an auto but its still a beast, 8th volvo and definitely my best
Good choice on the tyres, can confirm these shaved 0.2 secs off the 0-60mph

There’s a s60r awd around the block, I think he did some body work on it, etc. got the exhaust pipe sticking out the body bumper
how is it underpowered ????? the E46 M3 has 338hp and the B6 S4 is 339hp so not underpowered at all.....

it running well with 340hp in a stock engine? what about the sleeves?
Considering the mods in surprised at the small gains
Considering the price and the quality would this be a good first car?
Make sure You've got enough money for insurance and regular servicing. It is not a cheap car to run.

Car so rare! I can’t find it no where to buy one
Plenty of autos being imported from Japan but the m66 manual is a rare beast i looked for around 2 years before buying my v70r

Where do you GET these in the U.S. there are none on autotrader
and the engine is found in the focus st
I met Roy at Ace Cafe London for a Volvo meet. I have the same car in black and we took some superb photos. Do you know if this car has the stock exhaust or aftermarket
I believe this is a Powerflow cat back.
What else was done to get 340HP? Here in the US they were about 250-265HP stock. Can you really get 100HP from software?
Hi, the S60R in the UK came with 300bhp as standard. The owner has had a remap and the exhaust done.
You can get 400+ on the s60R/T5 with only software
Frajmando how?? A remap makes it 340-350 and thats it, to get 400 you need a fmic and exhaust

You should really make a video of drag racing a 2001 corvette on the highway. They'll never know what hit them. :)
yo ought to try the new S60 polestar with 367 Hp , AWD and 8 speed auto ( only option)
I would love to get my hands on one.
