Useful stuff. Think im going to order the 15. To pull you up on a nerdy science point thou, you said the metal black stone is physically colder than the plastic version. Technically they are the same temperature (if both sitting in same room.)
Metal FEELS colder than plastic due to the fact it is a good conductor. And plastic is a better insulator.
They are physically the same temp, but the metal sucks heat out of your higher than room temperature hand. It’s this that we feel as being cold. Our own heat leaving our fingertips.
So after holding both lenses the metal lens is technically warmer than the plastic lens.
Because your hand has warmed it more than the plastic one. (Even though the metal one still feels colder)

Very good point ... Although if I'm being picky I said the metal felt colder than my hand the plastic lens felt different ... which is technically true 😉

I own the 15mm . You are spot on with the lens hood, as I also reach around the hood to rotate the polarizer. I have used the lens often and find it to be a very good and easy lens to use. I find myself reaching for it more and more . All in all, I would recommend it for your arsenal.

Its great for 1 year max before falling apart. Talking from experiemce. I look after my lenses but this one, the seal will come loose first followed by the bolts. Shame really. A great lens otherwise

Just purchased Irix Blackstone 15mm f2.4 to pair specifically with Canon 5D Mark IV astro converted (Spencer). Intention to use lens and camera on an iOptron Sky Guider Pro tracker for wide angle Nightscape and Milky Way imaging and extend exposure times, as may be needed. I liked the Irix build reliability, test results, filter capability and weather sealing as you have cited. Considered Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f2.8 and Sigma 14mm f1.8. Irix with right quality, feature mix and price point for me at this time. Other lenses I use for astro include Zeiss 25mm f1.4, Sigma 50mm f1.4, Canon 85mm f1.4. Looking forward to first images with IRIX! Thanks for nice review, good job on feature comparison and exploring other options.

It's my favorite for milkyway and aurora! Just love the click preset infinity focus. So much easier out in the dark! Just keep exposures the right length and the stars are nice and round! Using it with a Aps-c D7100.

I too would love to see a mirrorless version of the 11, that would be great.

Thanks for the review - I am on DSLR and looking for a review, as by now these can also be found second hand. Found one for ~250 GBP, so going for it.

While the Firefly has 3 seals, the Blackstone has 4 seals, an extra seal for the front elements; the Firefly does not have this 4th seal.

Thank you so much, a great detailed review, particularly liked the comparison at the end. Subscription worthy!! Well done! Although I just bought the Firefly for my Canon R RF regardless as the Laowa F2 15mm canon is £750! ( the firefly is £400 with .2 distortion) The second choice would still be the Canon 16-35mm II second hand. Shame no RF! All the best M

You start very technical on the lens. For must of us, I think. I was looking for the overall performance. And after if good. The details. Nice video, great work ;)

I thought the weather seal was different between the Firefly and Blackstone at the front lens element. Nice vid cheers.

You also missed the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 G1 and G2 VC and the Tokina 16-28 f/2.8. Not that it matters but it is always good to give people choice :-) I winder how it measures up to the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 which I appreciate is a 2.5 times more expensive. So my question would be is its IQ (esp. for night photography 2.5 times better)?

Foyle Bridge, Derry 😊 live here nice little surprise! Have the irix lens and is brilliant! My go to lens for shooting the Aurora on our Iceland tours! Question is..... Do I stick with them for the filters?

    • @DaveMcKeegan

I've been impressed with their filters whenever I've used them. There are other options on the market but 95mm limits the choices and there aren't really cheaper options

You could have been a very good university lecturer, Dave. The only other RUclipsr-photographer-vlogger I've seen who elaborates complex technical and non-technical staffs so interestingly and easily is Thomas Heaton, and Tom is more focused on non-technical things. This is another vlog of yours im watching 2nd time. Greetings.

Nice review, it's too bad they didn't send you the 100mm Edge Square Filter system with 100mm square filters. They finally started shipping that, so hopefully you can do a review on that with the Irix 15mm in the future

Great info Dave since I am looking at buying a wide angle lens for astrophotography. I am a Nikon shooter and want to buy a lens at 1,000 or less. I plan to use this wide angle primarily for that purpose. Having had the ability to shoot many lenses. Is there a lens that comes to mind that is better? Thanks, Jerry

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  4 года назад

There aren't many lenses that can match this for astro - there are some 14mm f2.8's but non can taken filters - the Sigma 14mm f1.8 is arguably the most suited to astro but it's also pretty pricey.

In Australia, this lens has been unavailable and stores saying it's been discontinued and no longer available. This is really weird because it was quite a new lens. I really don't know what's going on!
