Very helpful video. I was wondering how do you select "No Fill" in the Properties gradient spectrum color stops, when it does not appear in the color picker nor swatches, so that you can transition from no fill to a color? Thanks.
hi Brendan please help. Whenever i use a gradient my image becomes grey and it does not have the original colours of the image. i wonder if you could help me please
Dear Brendan .... Thank you for your amazing videos. I do have a problem on my gradient map that have appeared a few days ago and can't resolve it. Whenever I click the gradient map option in the adjustment layer, the color goes SEPIA instead of black to white although the color swatches are set to Black (000000) and White (ffffff). Please guide me . Thank you
Hi Brendan, thank you for this overview on gradients. I am unfamiliar with this new version which is what I have in my Photoshop. How do I approve my grad? I'm still seeing the line and circles. Is there a way to say yes and make it go away? Thank you!
Not totally related, but kind of. Do you know if there is a way to replace a color used across multiple layers? For example if color A is used in a font, a shape, a color fill, a gradient, etc. is there a fast way to replace all areas of a certain hex code? An example would be similar to how MS PowerPoint has their color pallette in master slides. Or how you can replace a color across all pages in Canva.
THANK YOU FOR THIS. I teach at the University and have been a Photoshop user since 2.0. I'm sorry, but I can't figure out why they added this new tool. Where we and our digital major students need clarification is that in our previous processes, we chose color swatches to set the gradient tool colors or made the foreground transparent when using the gradient on a mask. It seems like Adobe could spend development money on more useful upgrades rather than this tool. After watching your video, I am still trying to figure out how I would want to use the gradient tool and where we could benefit from this device. It would be helpful if we could see this work on a real image instead of a blank white layer. I appreciate your clarity and forgive us, who started with Photoshop some 24 years ago.
Thanks for that feedback, youre not the first to say you dont see how that could be used in a real image. Perhaps thats something Ill put as a to do for another video.
Ok, but ... I am having a hard time with the tool (in Elements) because I would like to use it on one part of the photo, not all of it. And you gloss over the contradictory instructions/usage in your demo. You draw a gradient line and say the gradient begins where the line starts and ends where the line ends - but it clearly does not. You say the black begins where you start the line but it has actually started at the left end of the screen, and similarly with the other end of the gradient - it goes to the edge of the screen. I would expect the gradient to be constrained by the length of the line you draw - which you say it is when it actually isn't. I cannot apply a gradient to one third of the image because it always cover the whole screen no matter the location and length of the line. Any ideas?
How do you add gradients to a selected area? It keep's applying a mask and I don't want that! I need to be able to rasterize text, add gradient to the text (WITHOUT A MASK) and then dupe the layer and gaussian blur it. No one seems to have an answer to this. Please someone help.

Great, but hear me out, if Adobe would have done it's job properly when designing this tool, there would not be a need for a tutorial on how to use a basic tool such as gradients. On every other program is standard. You want a gradient? Click on the gradient tool, choose the mode you want your gradient to be (Transparent-Foreground, reverse of that, Two tone gradient), choose the type of gradient (radiant, linear or any other shape you want), click and drag on how long that gradient color should be and done. You got yourself a gradient. It amazes me that there is a team of people at Adobe who said down and said, let's do gradients the "Photoshop way". Choose the gradient mode or the classic gradient mode that do roughly the same thing, Enter layer options, update the colors by choosing each pivot point, Set a specific distance on how and what distance should be between each color, choose the style of your gradeient (Linear, Radiant, Spiral - Which si a half working radiant feature we had a bug but we transformed it into a feature, and a bunch of other mores that you will absolutely love not using because they are utterly useless), set the alpha for every Pivot point (because God forbid we name it opacity because we named that on every other tool), make you choose if you want a smooth gradient or a junky one (another bug we transformed into a feature), recite the Bible and do some more stuff, and done. You got yourself a gradient. The Photoshop way.
Your write up on the “photoshop way” made me laugh lol I 100% hear you. I think its difficult to balance beginners, hobby users, and professional needs all in the same program. The complexness offers tools useful for advanced users, but can be extremely roundabout and unnecessary for more casual uses. Thats my thoughts at least.

Great presentation. Crystal clear and useful
Outstanding tutorial! Clear and concise.
How do you get the line with the points to stay on the image. Once I let go of the mouse button, the line disappears.
PERFECT explanation of gradient tool!!!!!!
Super professional and elegant as always Brendan. Thanks so much for your time and pedagogy
Always of value Brendan
It amazes me the amount of information and knowledge you possess.😀
Thanks Mark. I just happen to spend way too much time looking at Photoshop 😅

Very good presentation. Well done!
Glad you liked it!
This was an amazing lesson. I always struggled with gradients and you saved me. Thank you

thanks....I find using the gradient tool a bit hit and miss...I also FEAR the dreaded PEN TOOL if you can do something with that....Thank you...
Noted. I'll add that to the to-do list
Thanks, you are very good at explaining! Perhaps you could explain how to use a gradient filter together with a photo?
For using gradients with images I would typically just use a gradient map adjustment layer, which I have a tutorial about from a few weeks ago!
Wow, you did such a GREAT job explaining everything so simply and concisely. Thank you!
Thank you sir .
I have a question when I use gradient tool starting to end point I can't add the colour points
Can I help you
@@taimoormughal-y1s how?
Excellent explainer!
Glad you found it helpful!
Thank you so much, Brendan - this was perfect!
Thanks, exactly what I needed!
Photoshop 2023 (24.2) working space (canvas) gradient editor mid point (center diamond) editor not showing to edit.how can fix this? please help me

Use a clipping mask between the gradient layer and the type layer. Then you can blur the rasterized text and the gradient still shows through.
How do I apply a gradient on an object?
How do you do this on an actual image?
Thank you!
Sorry new here, what’s the point of changing the “Gradient”?
ty bro
Muchas gracias!
De nada!
THANK YOU
do you happen to doo or know school . that will help me with this? this is so frustrating

I've been using Photoshop since 1992 and I HATE the new gradient mode.

Whilst this is a great video I believe if you gave examples with photos it would sink in more!
I appreciate that feedback for next time!
