    Don't confuse prepping and camping. It is good to have redundancy for some key items, but going overboard with the "two is one, one is none" thought for camping quickly leads to overpacking with stuff that never gets used. Camping will build good survival skills, but, especially with family trips, if conditions suck and things break... don't be afraid to pull the plug and go home.

    stuff I learned from WWII vets as a boy scout way back when
    1 don't put first aid stuff at the bottom of your pack. keep it ready, same with rain gear most of the time
    2 if cooking over wood put some soap on the outside of your pots and pans before cooking, it will make cleanup so much easier
    3 if in a group, the strongest hiker in back, the second strongest in front, no stragglers
    4 figure out how to use natural materials as insulation for your shelter, leaves, evergreens, even snow
    5 dry out and clean your tent, sleeping bag and pack after you get home
    6 the best place to store water is inside you, drink before you get thirsty you will have better endurance, be stronger and more flexible
    stuff I learned on my own, but
    1 bears know that you tie food up over a branch, they have seen it before and will find the rope and pull everything down
    2 At least one bear knows how to unwrap the individually wrapped sliced cheese
    3 If you like the site and may come back, improve it, leave firewood, some lash ed camp furniture, even a lean-to
    4 know when to turn back
    5 a lightweight sharpening tool is a great thing
    Mistakes I've seen others make
    1 a half liter of water isn't enough
    2 don't abuse your tools
    3 that great flat spot might also be the place where ran collects and puddles
    4 dull knives, machetes, axes and hatchets are more dangerous than sharp ones
    5 drinking to excess on the trail is not a good thing the next day, sometimes even that night
    6 warm and dry is so much less tiring than cold and wet
    7 being rescued is better than dying, but sometimes you end up with a huge bill

      Definitely some good ones! The one about the bear unwrapping the cheese made me laugh! Thanks for watching.

      @@grimgranite Seeing that pile of wrappers that morning was amazing. The eggs including the carton were gone, the steaks were gone, the potatoes were scattered across the ground, the canvas bag was torn open. It was a long walk back to the car.

    All good stuff. Yeah, I like finding the multi use items and they can be the not so exciting stuff that makes the difference, a couple of cotton bandanas for instance, multi use and weigh almost nothing. My big one would be, be honest and unashamed to yourself about your limitations. There's nothing wrong with camping somewhere where you can see your car at the other end of the parking lot if that is what you are currently up to. Its when you go from nothing to 15 miles a day with a 45lb pack you might have problems. Small steps and you'll enjoy it more.

    Yes !! Water proof bags are a must...so worth the money!
    Didn't think I needed one till I went kayaking....and was so thankful for it.
    I'm so glad you mentioned those specific knots...because I didn't where to start.
    Thank you!
    God bless🙏❤️

    This list is fantastic! It's right on the money! I'm an experienced backpacker of 25-years so I love seeing/learning what others are doing. Yes, drink the water you use to clean your pot. Take less clothing. Have a system that works for you - where you store tiny things. Love the cardboard hack!

    I carry a water straw. You can do the same thing with a Nalgene bottle. Fill it up and drink it through the straw as you walk away. You do not need to use the straw directly in the water source, lol.

    Dude, enjoyed the show.... but I draw the line at slurping gray water. Wow, hardcore. Drop sheets are always with me. My favorite and I have used for years is the square blow up light use it everywhere. Keeps Bigfeets away! Thanks for the share. 👴

    Great list, thank you 😊 do you ever have a brain in a brain? I travel a lot on trains, but drive to the station. I have a phobia of losing my keys as my days are long, and wont notice until I return. Given they are not used all day, though I am always in and out of my bag for other stuff, I keep them deeper inside the "second brain", for fear of them falling out during the many times im in the bag. Such as with camping, the last thing you want to realise after getting back to the car after days of hiking and camping, is the keys are lost! Or maybe I am paranoid. 😂

    • @grimgranite
      @grimgranite  7 месяцев назад +1

      I practice a similar strategy with my keys. Inside the brain bag or ditty bag, I clip my keys to a loop. This way they won’t fall out. Thanks for watching!

    do you have a 40 to 45L budjet backpack option other than the granite gear crown x?

      @grimgranite  7 месяцев назад +1

      North Face makes a 40L called the Terra. It's on sale for around $100 right now on Amazon. I will throw a link in the description of the video for you.
