I’m so happy of the praise you give and even the suggestions. Thanks for finally covering MK MUGEN! However we must give praise to the man who build the updated MKP engine. Mugen games with large roster feels like a collectible trading card game when we were young and the kombat are like when we slapped those cards onto one another to know which card wins
Well that is a problem. Imagine playing a game you don't understand and you get stoned by millions of characters without getting to understand them. Personally I am fan of small playable characters more. Will I want more characters after I am familiar? Of course I do but hitting a learning curve that seem like a wall isn't what I wanna hit my head against. For me, Mugen is just an interactive art piece made by a group of people. It's fun to try, not so satisfying to keep playing.
"It feels like this game is a general container for all these fanmade characters" Yup. That's pretty much what Mugen is at it's core. You can do AMAZING things with it. You can also download a skin, throw in a bunch of characters and have a blast.
The reason why Chaotic felt so weird and unpolished to you is likely due to the fact that most MUGEN "projects" are slapped together with loads of plagiarized characters and stages and barely any thought put into how any of those things mesh together. On the bright side, at least it has _PANTHERK._
To explain a bit more, Mortal Kombat Project had about the same roughness and jank as Chaotic. The first time an MK MUGEN actually looked like it was made by competent programmers and artist was Mortal Kombat Trilogy Extended (MKTX) . The first time it featured impressive sprite work, sound design and it wasn't trying to be this weird mishmash of MK and KOF since most MK fanworks at the time were from the South American scene.. It would have been a full-fledged release had someone in the dev team not backstabbed them at the last second. So what we ended up with was an incomplete but still competent build and most of the work was transferred over to Project.
@@Jose_Doe Someone I think intentionally leaked an early build of the game without the devs' consent. There might have been some other mummery involved but yeah
I highly recommend checking out Mortal Kombat Trilogy Extended, if you can. It stays true to the klassic MK formula, while having its own unique sprites and fatalities for the entire cast, even the bosses.
Defenders of the Earth is in a lot better of a spot now. The camera even Dynamically zooms the camera in and out the further and closer you get. Making it feel and look a lot better. Its becoming my favorite Mugen.
I like to imagine MK Mugen being an alternate timeline where instead of making the universe seen in MK1, Liu Kang decides to make the new timeline a huge shitpost with Homer Simpson and The Undertaker
Glad to see mk mugen games being talked about. I've been into these kind of 2d mk fangames ever since 2007. It blew my mind to the point I'll download every mk project game with cool looking rosters and the same janky old engine, including mk chaotic. I soon stopped since most the mk mugen games were the same thing, but different visuals. But then around 2014 or 15, I noticed mktx, which wasn't out at the time but shown in test videos was being made and that peaked my intrest. Then 2017 came along. Mkp season 2 made by borg was out. I looked at some gameplay and notice the engine and visuals were improved. That also reignited my love for these mk mugen games. Im glad to see it get it's recognition. Thanks for making this video!
This will be a bit long, but hope you still read it. Its Nice to see a mugen video. I am a mugen creator. Most mk mugens are all the same and are all garbage for the most part. Basically, There was a project that was in the works called "the mortal kombat project" that released a few betas and the community absolutely ripped it to shreds. And by that I mean people downloaded it, made tons of edits, and re-released them as "their" creation. Soon enough, everyone else done the same thing. So now there is literally 1000000 versions of the same engine. Then people, much like the the case with chaotic, add general mugen characters from other projects which causes tons of bugs, crashes and broken gameplay As mentioned, I was creating 2 games called "ninja kombat: kirisute gomen" and "mortal kombat rebirth" at the same time, which totally broke that mkp stigma mold. I had everything. From basic mk3 style combos, 3d era style branches and monks/mka style air combos. I also was the first to make use of the wakeup game and the breaker system. It's also a well known fact (though Nrs may not admit it) that nrs totally copied my vision for tremor for his debut in mkx. I was a victim of the mkp effect. I released a few private betas and one of the people leaked it online and tons of people stole some of the characters and mainly my coding to use in their projects. Any mk mugen game you play that has the 3 breaker system, came from my coding. The game was getting massive attention and traction and I pulled the plug due to the leak. I've made small updates to it here and there over the years but just cant devote the time it needs to be 100% finished. If I get the chance, maybe I could send you a copy of it to play and try out.
Yeah shameless thievery is part of the MK mugen community lol. Found that out the hard way. I was editing sprites and learning how to do animations, and I did some props and arena edits, and posted it on DA, and after a while I started seeing my work show up in YT videos, and strangers claiming it's their creation. At first it really annoyed me, but it kept happening, and I guess it's kind of inevitable. I haven't worked on anything in a while, because my pc crashed and I lost all of my content. But yeah, I get your point about people stealing your content. Just keep doing what you love doing, don't let it get to ya!
@@roycosta6878 who said I was complaining? I surely didnt. I take it as the ultimate compliment that they got inspired from my work, as well as others in the mugen community

When it comes to MUGEN MK Games it's a real mixed bag. I've personally played "MKP Season 2" I think(?), not the same one as you played. It's a little bit more traditional while adding some modern visual elements, QoL stuff and some more combo potential. It has a few non-2D characters too but the creator Borg117 seems to have tried to fit them in with the classic style. It's been a few years since I last played it though so I have no idea where it's at now. What I enjoyed was messing around with the files which let me customise it as I wanted. Didn't like a character? Take them off the character list. Add a new character? Do it. Remove half the stages because you want to keep things traditonal? Why not. I even re-arraged the roster screen because I thought my order worked better.
yeah that is how all three of the games presented here were made from the basic engine build (it's still season 2 but got quite a few updates - from 2.5 to 2.9 to final). some of these editors care for balancing the stuff that they put together out, others care less.

The most important part of gaming used to be the people you met in the arcades, now it is sitting at home in the name of convenience. I feel for kids today never having the arcade experience.. it was such a crucial part of developmental life, social skills and learning to control one’s emotions in a healthy way. Even learning the importance of respect.
The creativity of some of the weirdo characters is off the charts....I remember someone commenting how they played Homer Simpson in "Beer Riot" mode where he chugs a huge beer at the beginning of the round and gains even more special moves but takes away half his life. :D Just....wow.
If that's the Homer Simpson version I think it is then it's fantastic. It even has a unique animation for starting the battle when you play across from Peter Griffin
thanks for giving fanmade MK games a lightspot. MK Mugen and MKP (the base engine that is used for all three games in your video) came a long way since 2007 i guess. yeah some of the versions built upon that basis are quickly slapped together without care for balance, others however still care for what they add.
well i was with it kinda like since 2013, so that "broken MKP" was still made from zero (or kfm) by the original team, that is still a huge load of work.
MK mugen is by far the best mugen to play. Especially the 2v2s. I have tons of hours playing different mk mugens with my brother. We need mk mugen meta.
Using the Mugen engine in tandem with fighter factory allows for some craaazy stuff. I enjoyed the coding side of things and making my own character palettes for characters. Adding screenpacks, lifebars and different fonts also makes for a unique experience. As a fan of MK, you guys and Mugen, I'm really glad you decided to finally take a look at some of them. They're definitely their own unique thing in terms of gameplay and representation. But that's what makes the MK fandom so special. A large group of creative and passionate people showing love for their favorite franchise. The more people that can experience Mugen the better, there are some AWESOME fan projects out there
This is the content I LOVE. I grew up playing MUGEN games and always sought out the good quality Mortal Kombat characters. Thanks for making this video! I knew about Chaotic but not the others
This is a cool video! I myself have had little knowledge of these games, other than Chaotic I guess, but they all look unique. MK Defenders of the Earth looks like a normal fan-game, MK Project looks like if you cross-bred Trilogy and Armageddon, and fed the baby nothing but steroids, and MK Chaotic looks like... Well, MUGEN. I actually kinda wanna pick up MK Project myself...
Oh, I remember watching Kane vs Satan on RAW. Too bad they turned off the cameras when Kane did his fatality. I love Mugen, but it's a lot of work to find/make a set that's balanced and not filled with memery like Omega Tom Hanks. The pack I like most is SvC Mugen 3rd Battle Edition, which is a mostly vanilla SNK vs Capcom experience, despite the fact that I've shoved in Evil Ryu/Ken, Goku, and Ichigo. I do like the attention to detail in this one, especially the small quakes every time Tremor hits the ground from a jump or what have you.
mortal kombat 3 defined a style of gameplay that could have taken the franchise in a very satisfying direction with fast and brutal combos. Unfortunately with the failure of the MK4 they abandoned this progress and adopted other forms of gameplay that ended up leading the game to have these strange animations and without impacts, with boring combos to be seen and looking like a street fighter hybrid with Tekken only worsened. Muguem are the fans' attempt to bring that feeling of impact back. As much as you show bone breaking in one punch, without frames of decent impacts, there is no way to sell this idea of brutality.
That's a big part of why I still play the MUGEN games. MK3 is still the definitive gameplay experience for me and I still wish they used digitized actors. These give me more of that
Maaaaan I remember MK Project way back when they added Hidra as a secret character in version 4.2 I believe?. Their intent was always to recreate MK3 but at some point Project was renamed to "Extreme Mortal Kombat 3" and then just dropped altogheter in 2014. Anyways, nice to see MKP live on even if the original team is gone. I remember way back when they were trying to make a full spritesheet of Fujin by combining MK3's Liu Kang and MK2's Kung Lao, and now they have like Kotal Kahn, Kenshi or Drahmin? That's crazy lol.
Awesome video dude, thanks for putting this together. Am a huge MK fan and I've heard about these just never played them or saw them so thanks for the footage and time 🤟..
Defenders of the Earth looks amazing, it's like MKX - MK11 with old school graphics but they messed up by zooming ALLL the way out. I hate the way it feels and looks. If they were gonna do something like that, at least make it like the Art of Fighting or SNK fighters that zoom in and out. Just feels way too barren yet boxed in.
"While I did commentate professionally, I used to play Mortal Kombat competitively!" - suddenly getting hype at the twins' Cyrax vs Sektor matchup in MK9 and MKX 2015 Evo makes me feel old.
@@PNDKM Totally insane, man. But it was a great time. I myself got into FGCs a bit more then and look at you and Jake then and now my dude, going strong! Hope this wild ride doesn't end anytime soon.
Maybe one of the previous versions of mk project is what hes looking for since they have a mk trilogy feel of multiple character versions across franchise history
@@PNDKM funny cus that crazy robot moves was originaly from another robot in MK Cyber Realm muggen where r only tekunins to pick , and i guess that insane broken machine moves r from Kasylotron or another cyber ninja with malfunction , but not Hydro hahaha best robot ever , NRS should make one of those for MK 12 or mk 11 DLC.
I remember the MUGEN days when it was so popular and anyone could use it since it was an open source fighting game creator and you can use any character from almost any fighting game and if the character wasn't available eventually they would be since ppl always uploaded them on the internet when you can download them easy and put them in. You could also tweak settings like make boss characters have more health or more power. And if the characters were different in size like going from Marvel vs Capcom to Mortal Kombat you could adjust the size of the character in the settings and make them the same size and make things look cohesive.
Mortal Kombat Project has changed a lot from when I last saw it. (five years ago in a video from MrGSTAR321) Its really cool to see how much it changed.
Question: Would "Mortal Kombat Project" work as an alternative to the first three MK games (given that they've been delisted from all digital distribution platforms, except for the old PC versions on GOG)? Or is it more of a fan-made complement to the classic games?
I didnt know any1 played MK competitively. I grew up in the arcade days, MK1 through Trilogy, the OG's, the new ones just suck. So these mugen games have been amazing, some of them are better than any real game like BY FAR, not even close.
Thank you so much for this video!! I too have been watching these RUclips videos of Mugen MK and wanted to try one myself, keep doing what you're doing man👍
Good Vid I've pretty much played every MK game that has been made I got into the Mugen games years ago.To me Chaotic is a crazy one but still pretty fun. I do love project it to me has a more realistic MK feel. Over all I do like them for their creative settings, an gameplay.
You can go into the mechanics of the game and change the max damage or even get rid of it all together for Project. All characters and mechanics are changeable if you know how or take the time to learn how. You can alway remove and add characters and other mechanics anytime you take the time to set it up to your style
God, I’ve been following and playing MKP for years, and it’s still the best Mugen, that feels like the arcade experience, with a hybrid of more modern MK. There’s just so much love and passion put into it, that really sets it aside from other MK Mugens, especially in quality. If anyone is interested in it, I strongly suggest MKP; if there’s features you don’t like, try older versions, or try putting in or taking out characters you don’t like - the game has so much choice in it.
Hey nice of you to try mugen. Revitalized 2 will be getting an update soon. I agree with you on defenders of the earth. If you were okay with the variety of chaotic I recommend the remake of mk anthology it's less of the characters without polish and they make it work.

3:08 that combo was sick
Why is anybody talking about him not mentioning "El Chavo del 8"? lol
@5:23 is that Diablo 2 music in the background??
mortal kombat 3 defined a style of gameplay that could have taken the franchise in a very satisfying direction with fast and brutal combos.
If you liked the level of polish that MK projekt has, then you need to try MK solano edition 3.1. That one is really well done.
I'm definitely maining Bear Sub-Zero.
5:07 ah yes, Kenshit Akashi, my favourite character
MK Trilogy X... that’s what I wanted to see you play, it’s beautiful
Awesome video dude, thanks for putting this together. Am a huge MK fan and I've heard about these just never played them or saw them so thanks for the footage and time 🤟..
I wonder why the dev group behind DotE chose to go with that scale. I'd love to know. Hoping some of the devs and K&M fans.
Just feels way too barren yet boxed in.
that ending part about when you start with sector and then going to rain can be applied to blazblue cross tag too hahah
Leo Messi was one of the characters lol. i want to see his move list
what?? imma check that now cos i have mk chaotic 2 on my laptop
"While I did commentate professionally, I used to play Mortal Kombat competitively!" - suddenly getting hype at the twins' Cyrax vs Sektor matchup in MK9 and MKX 2015 Evo makes me feel old.
Crazy how MKX was already 5 years ago isn't it
@@PNDKM Totally insane, man. But it was a great time. I myself got into FGCs a bit more then and look at you and Jake then and now my dude, going strong! Hope this wild ride doesn't end anytime soon.
Everytime I play MK Mugen the cpu jumps into the void never to be seen again.
Yay!!! MKA getting props for the amazing work on Revitalized 2!
Just found your videos from your competitive chameleon video. Love your style! Thank you for the effort you put into these, they are very well made.
Some of this footage had me dying!
Glad you got into the Mugen games! Hope you play a few others.
4:55 whats the name of this stage? I really like it
Yep, Mugen started my youtube career and will always be a part of me.
Maybe one of the previous versions of mk project is what hes looking for since they have a mk trilogy feel of multiple character versions across franchise history
This is beautiful the MK community is always bringing fresh ideas to the franchise with this type of Mugens
Glad to see some robo hydro in this video 🤣
I was not prepared for what I saw
@@PNDKM
funny cus that crazy robot moves was originaly from another robot in MK Cyber Realm muggen where r only tekunins to pick , and i guess that insane broken machine moves r from Kasylotron or another cyber ninja with malfunction , but not Hydro
hahaha
best robot ever , NRS should make one of those for MK 12 or mk 11 DLC.
@@CyberCristo there was a robot called "monnitor" who only had that electric-dizzy stance, but not the moves
The new update to defenders of earth shortend the screen size and added new chracters
I’m amazed I’m saying this about a mugen project, but the second game looks amazing!
Or is it more of a fan-made complement to the classic games?
fanmade complement, definitely
I didnt know any1 played MK competitively. I grew up in the arcade days, MK1 through Trilogy, the OG's, the new ones just suck. So these mugen games have been amazing, some of them are better than any real game like BY FAR, not even close.
Thank you so much for this video!! I too have been watching these RUclips videos of Mugen MK and wanted to try one myself, keep doing what you're doing man👍
I love MK but I’m totally lost. How do I get and play these fan version? Someone help
I'd definitely revisit some of the mugen MK games, especially with the constant updates and revisions that have been made to them.
In terms of best Recreations of non classic characters Mortal Kombat New Era is the best so far. Even giving them an iconic 2D look
The competitive history of Ronald McDonald
Great video. Love the narration man!
Keep up the kontent
Wow that Defenders of Earth 2v2 reminds me of Melee, a lot more space to maneuever and strategize
Good Vid I've pretty much played every MK game that has been made I got into the Mugen games years ago.To me Chaotic is a crazy one but still pretty fun. I do love project it to me has a more realistic MK feel. Over all I do like them for their creative settings, an gameplay.
5:45 dang these street fighter titles are getting crazy
Quan Chi was in a 2d game, Mythologies Sub Zero, that's the version they used on the mugen
Yep. They do exist.
And yep. MUGEN is amazing.
I love MUGEN, it shows how creative the fans can be
Since I didn't' see it in the first few comments...
P A N T H E R K
Where is the full intro music at?
Can’t wait to play UMK3 on the PlayStation.
Just found out about the Set plans to remaster the MK Arcade Trilogy. Hype!
You should totally try out MKTX. Best one out there so far, though it never got fully finished
That rain combo at 3:00
Man this channel is amazing glad you covered mugen
Characters in MUGEN used to have over 10 finishing moves, you didn't mention it
If he started he would never finish
All three games have their pros and cons for sure but I highly recommend every MK fan check them out for sure.
Very good video, congratulations!!
6:32 I just realised they gave the pulse blades to Takeda in mkx
That's why I wanted to learn Ronin in MKX :)
Can't wait for the Competitive Character History for PANTHERK
You can go into the mechanics of the game and change the max damage or even get rid of it all together for Project. All characters and mechanics are changeable if you know how or take the time to learn how. You can alway remove and add characters and other mechanics anytime you take the time to set it up to your style
I love the way he says Doink.
Wow defenders of the earth looks fucking stunning !! Definitely need resizing as you mentioned but that one is just orgasmic to stare at
Actually Quan Chi has been in a 2D setting just not playable so has Shinnok in the Sub Zero Mythologies game.
Have you thought about getting/modding an arcade 1up MK cabinet? I bet you'd love it, if you haven't looked into it.
I really want one but they're a pain to find in the UK
Rain in the second game looks badass
Hey nice of you to try mugen. Revitalized 2 will be getting an update soon. I agree with you on defenders of the earth. If you were okay with the variety of chaotic I recommend the remake of mk anthology it's less of the characters without polish and they make it work.
anyone have a dowload link for Mk Project, I cant seem to find a good one anywhere
I want to play these games but when I download them I can’t play them, do I need an emulator or thing for these?
I think Mugen is the only game I know of made by an ice addict.
