Explanation of how the brake operates.
When there is no electricity, note " no electricity" fed into the motor there is no magnetism and so the spring in the brake pushes on the brake friction part, which in turn reacts with the chassis of the motor, hence the brake is on and the motor does not turn.
When electricity is fed to the windings of the motor, the coils become magnetised and they transfer their magnetism to the rotor which in turns pulls the bulk of the iron path of the brake against the spring and so the friction face is pulled way from the body of the motor and so the rotor is free to rotate, as long as there is electricity fed to the motor. Hence when up an down is applied the rotor of the motor is free to rotate, When the switches are off including the emergency switch then the motor is braked.
Basically the brake is the moving solenoid in an AC magnet.
