i know this video is old, but just want to point out that the PU coating on the split grain leather are for protecting the leather and make them more durable. PU coating itself is not faux leather. as far as how to tell if you have real leather vs synthetic leather; the easiest way is to take your finger nail and pick at the edge of the leather panel.
The quality of the leather is always my #1 concern when I buy Jays! Like when I was in the market for my Bred1s I don't want the 2013's, I went after the 2001's because the quality is 10x better which means they will last longer as well. Same with my 11's. I only own 2000/01 Cords and Breds because the leather is better on the ankle and the comfort is also better. Even the Patent Leather is better, and I bet ppl all think that Patent Leather isn't actually real leather but it is! Patent leather is sanded and buffed down to a shine finish and then it is coated in plastic giving it that fake leather look! Full grain leather is a lot stronger/durable than Top grain, and over time full grain becomes better as it conditions. Top grain is sanded down and buffed to get rid of imperfections, but when the top layer is taken away it becomes less durable and breaks down faster. Top grain is known as a cookie cutter leather because they use it on everything that's mass produced. Its not necessarily bad quality, but its nowhere close to having the durability and supple feel as a nice Full grain leather has. Also, tumbled leather has nothing to do with the quality of the leather, but rather the style of the leather. Also called pebbled leather because of the process of making it textured requires small stones to abrade the surface of the hide. Nubuck is a leather that is sanded down on the grain side to tease the fibers and give it a smooth velvet finish. The length of fibers determined by how much it is sanded and by what grit of sandpaper. If you live in Portland, there's a Leather shop called Tandy Leather over by Costco and they provide classes to make leather products and teach you anything you could want to know about leather! Ive taken a few classes and it helped me understand what I was getting for my buck!
Hey man help me out here I actually wanna know if the fake unauthorized replica Jordans are made with fake leather. I can't be sure with the originals, and the reason I ask is because contrary to most people, I'm actually avoiding any leather on this shoes (vegan reasons).
VEXARI ay man you posted this 7 months ago, so you gotta have some knoledge on vegan sneakers, if you do please tell me because i cant go with trash looking shoes
+Zai Zoldyck yeah man, it's crazy how unclear this whole thing is, I kinda gave up with the jordans (for now), it was too difficult to be sure, what I did learn is that if the material is Durabuck it's synthetic, but as I understand, that was a material they used to use in the past, seems like they've gone with nubuck and suade (real leather). I went to the store and got me some kind of Nike Air, I asked the seller if it was synthetic and he comes with the shoe like... "yeah yeah, it's synthetic" only to come back home and realize that it was coated leather, (half leather half synthetic). I returned them and I ended up with some Adidias at the moment. They had more clear options without leather. But I still got my eye on this fake ones, since they have canvas material instead: www.nkprice.com/upfiles/1511190411101.jpg I don't even think Nike ever even made this in canvas for man, only for women, I tried to find this in they're "authentic form" but it seems to me as if they only exist as fake ones, they look similar to the Eminem's Jordan's 4 (which the price it's ridiculous), but without the leather interior.
Split grain is the lowest quality. Think about it from a strength perspective. The top layer (full grain) is where all the strength is. Trying to pull or stretch it is much harder than if you sanded that top layer off to make a corrected grain (top grain). The split grain means that it's the cheapest cut. Jordan's are shit quality shoes. I don't think they were always bad. Now they are.
I dont know man... I have a friend that works in a sneaker boutique and the owner of the store (who gets brand new releases for sneakers as soon as theyre out) told him all jordans have fake leather...
I own the master 12's, 72-10 11's and pinnacle brown croc 1's and I can tell you that on the pinnacles the leather is full grain top quality and the smell of it is just superb that's why you pay 400$ for. The leather on the 12's is really hard and looks fake and the same goes for the 11's so it doesn't really matter if its kinda real because it's fake looking. So I guess if the quality of leather is a concern to you you should go for the pinnacle or the premium releases ONLY!
Jim Kamen definitely NOT croc leather. If anything it's embossed calf leather. Authentic croc leather watch straps sell for $200. And authentic croc leather boots are $1200. $400 would not be enough, not even double the price.
Leather that is smooth/hard/ no ripple is a Split Grain, found on the new White Grapes (can have a stiff durable coating). Leather found on car seats and shoes like the Oregon IVs are a full grain. It is more natural and softer than split
200- 250 as you said in my opinion is too high to pay. even they can give a bin23 series with great quality for around 175. i wouldn't paying that but most anyone should pay is 185 such as the past bred 11s that dropped. 200 is a bit to much for j's
And last from an athletic stand synthentics are better bcuz they provide quickness more durablity then leather ever can do. Synthentics are the new aged leather now and like u you said the cost of leather has gone up and if they did use premium leather we will be taxed more.
Agree completely. That's why I love the Rose 3.0's.. cause they brought back the nice quality nubucks, synthetic leathers, and even with the Chicago Fire cw they used the same material used on a Fireman's jacket. Dope as hell in my opinion.
you would be surprised tho what the actual costs are, if they only sold them at Nike stores that would be one thing, but the sell em to foot locker, champs, finishline, eastbay etc, for 1/2 price. so consider that, minus production costs etc and its not as much profit from a shoe as pp think.
it's more about full grain vs split grain with polyurethane coats to protect the leather but that also changes the "view" out the quality but it does have some advantages such as less creating even though it is a harder material. Just depends on wat you prefer. You want full grain you get the crease. Split grain means no crease but you sacrifice some of that feel that full grain leather has
Yo Hes, I think the quality is crap. I was shopping the mall with my gf and we went into this dress shoe store and I took a look at some of the mens shoes and the leather was butter soft and it LOOKED beautiful too and when I looked at the price, I was blown away. $100 for like the best leather I've ever seen on a shoe. I think we as a consumer are getting ripped off BAD. I had never heard of that dress shoe brand, and that makes me think that we're paying for the Jumpman and not the quality...
Well, you can tell the type of leather by looking at the seams. The smooth leather on the 4s are typically a split grain with a polyurethane coating. The banned 1s should be a whole grain, meaning they dont cut the leather in half.
I do agree that we should be getting better quality materials for the money. Then again, when I think about my loafers on "high designer" brands, that leather is A-1. Then again, the shoes were $500. I've seem great leather on some shoes, including AF1's a few years back. The leather on the Nike ID AF1's (back when it was invitation only) was incredible.
Honestly, I like the Fire Red V's this year. The leather seems a lot more durable than some others. I have worn my pair about 5 times, and I walked around A LOT. I walked around school all day and then about a mile and a half home twice. The creasing on them is minimal, and they still look great. I was surprised.
Me personally.... what the after market price cost for these shoes and what most of us end up doing is using places like STock X Goat etc to get shoes .... it’s much better to buy a real pair of leather shoes with good quality leather .. it makes much more sense to me .. Domt get me wrong the brand is popular i grew up in the Jordan era and i bought my first pair of Jordan’s with the 5 .. and then i bought a pair about 6 years ago and no way in hell are they the same not even close at all !!!! and that’s the only reason i turned away from buying jordan’s
@heskicks Great insightful vid bro as ever. I'm loving all the QS sneakers quality but often I've found regular GR drops were somewhat of a lesser quality. What did you find? As ever massive love & support from over here in Scotland #SneakerFamWorldWide
None of its real leather compared to when they first came out in the ‘90’s. They /Nike can say anything & get away with it. It too expensive to make it real leather now
If the Jordan brand would use real leather, the sneakers would cost double/tripple the price. ALL materials are synthetic, there is no leather on these Chinese made sneakers.
All shoes have small tags with info on the materials... I learned this Working at Intersport sweden. I'm Talking about the square sticker on the insole
It is a lot lower than that I think. Nike sells to retailers for ~50% of msrp I believe. So you figure production cost is even lower because why would they sell to a retail store such a Footlocker and only break even? Anyone more knowledgeable please correct me if I am wrong.
I think the price we're currently paying should be enough for high quality leather. Jordan brand needs to get the quality in check! I promised myself that I wouldn't buy another Jordan sneaker until their quality gets better.
where did you get your info on the actual shoes? when i talk to Nike reps and give them the product number, the 3,4, and 5 they confirm they are SYNTHETIC leather.
Jordan brand does use real leather but what they do is they put on a cheap polyurethane coat and with that they can do a lot to what the leather looks like
Red flip 3, red retro 6 so what the Carmine's look like but where the white is put black patent leather, and maybe an reverse of the bred 11's meaning where the black is put red n where the red is put black, blk bottoms ,that 3 pack would be nuts to me
Im already pissed that im paying 160 for cheap shoes when i got reebok wuestions for 125 with leather that shits on even JBs highest quality releases like bins
lol Jordan brand saying that they use fake leather is just as probable as a hotdog company telling you your hotdog was synthetic meat on the package lol.
well we don't pay for the type of material really in a way, we pay for the technology and for the name 'lebron' on our feet. But when we get down to it retro jordans are for the most part casual wear where sneaker people are afraid to get them damaged or whatever, lebrons are meant for performance even tho people rock casually, synthetic suits lbj cuz he's in the paint all the time and his shoes need durability. leather would get all ripped up or something or at least not last as long
jordan brand will never indicate the type of leather that they really use in their shoes so as to keep the consumers in the dark about the production cost in their shoes. i do think the production cost is less than 50% off of their msrp.
Quality does matter don't be fooled. The older you get the more you will be able to appreciate a well made shoe. Cheap shoes not only mess up your feet, but they can mess up your joints and cause back trouble too. Soft pliable leather will beat out that cheap plastic coated leather any day. Next time you are at a high end mall compare the buttery leather of a Gucci, Bally, or LV sneaker to that $160-$200 Jordan and then add reseller prices into the equation.
Glad u are objective and did your research cause most people speculate and then others take it as fact. People talk bout quality but don't show em worn out. Just nit pick. I know a girl that's complains if 1 stitch is or of place but wears em one time and says their done like did that stitch really mattered
I think the shoes are overpriced because if you were fortunate enough to pick up a pair of banned 1s at retail you are holding a premium leather based shoe at a more than resonable price. I also have noticed that my pewter jordans 1s also use a very soft leather. Now compare the leather on those two to the gucci or bulls colorway that recently released and you will see a big difference. My all leather AJKOs are another example of high quality materials used. Quality is all over the place.
I didn't like the material used on the fire red 5s 2013 release ,I thought it was cheap leather and it looked shiny and it wasn't smooth but that's my opinion nice vid hes
It is Nikes fault though! 100%! There is nothing holding them back from labeling the materials used in their products. In the EU it is even required by law for texture products to label all the materials used in that product! Nike just simply doesnt want to do it, because they can make more profit out of uninformed
I don't think I would pay more for a higher quality of leather, as you pointed out the difference is hardly noticeable and you would be paying based only on your knowledge of the shoe, rather than the experience of it. I think overall ignorance is bliss in this subject. Also what websites were you checking the description of the Jordans?
How much harder is it for the kids to make these shoes using high quality leather or not? I doubt they get paid more, so it would just be higher material costs. They can pay Lebron millions of dollars in sponsorship money so the cost of the material should be very negligible to them.
well you don't have to skin a cow for synthetic leather, although if they do use synthetic leather the price should drop to match the quality, but we'll buy jays no matter what so jordan brand doesn't have to do shit
Thats what the ppl don't understand, ppl do think og's were flawless and that makes me think did they ever owned any bcuz i remembered flawed og's. Same problems with glue down to scratches and scuffs on the paint. Og's.had great leather but other than that there no different then the retros.
I think its a shame how Jordan Brand charges so much for such a low quality shoe. The reality is everyone, including myself, will pay ridiculous prices for a retro because we love the shoes. And Jordan Brand will keep raising the prices while lowering the quality. Why?Because the retros sell out in a couple hours every single time. Just wanted to speak my peace a little bit. Thanks
To answer your question, I would actually pay more for fake leather because it's fucked up to make other animals suffer so we can unnecessarily wear their skin on our feet.
Maybe for you its not fucked up. But for the animals it is... Im not trying to attack you so please dont get offended. Educate yourself before making a conclusion. You are just saying something thats been told to you since birth, i was also believing this for a long time it took 28 years for me to find out.. Some people go through their whole life and never find out... Its like the people in north korea, they all beleave that america is trying to attack them lol... Just because they been lied to since birth for generations. They will defend their beliefs till they die.. Only a few of them are open minded and smart enough to know that they are being lied to.. You always have to hear both sides of the story. Watch ( earthlings ) on youtube and see how fucked up this really is. Dont just close your eyes and say its not fucked up! Im not trying to attack you, its not personal against you, im just saying please educate your self before making a conclusion. This type of education you will not find in school because its all designed for you to not see it. If not now, maybe in a couple of years or so it will maybe make sense to you my friend :) Peace out
No, we might as well make good use of the hundres of cows we kill on a daily basis anyways for their meat. So in reality the cow is going to even more of a good use
the quality of leather used on the new fire red 5 retros is inexcusable and an insult to consumers. they can at least use an average leather we are paying $160 for a shoe that costs them a lot less than that to make. they are getting away with it now but the poor quality will catch up with them...then they will make a change
No, the current price is already too high for most of today's cheap leather shoes. I will accept a change that paying the current price but for a higher quality material. Definitely not like your idea to pay even more for an upgraded material.
leather creeps me out. to wear mammal. I would rather have recycled plastic and bamboo. so... what about the cloned leather grown in a laboratory with no cow?
there is alot of sneakers nike make from leather: dunks, sb, af1, soccer boots, some air max etc... u are just looking at all the hyped up bball sneakers eg. bron, kb, kd etc... which leads to ur conclusion, sneakers now days are made from other materials... which is not true at all
Check out videos by Rancourt they make extremely high quality dress shoes with high grade leathers they have several vids that are highly educational about leathers n how to put together a shoe
There isn't a grading system for the leather becuz 99% of the people buying sneakers don't really care. If sneakers were made with the worst materials in the world they would still sell out.
I'm in 2020 and vegan and currently looking for synthetic jordans. I would pay more if I knew a shoe was completely synthetic.
How you go with your search also looking!
Sound like all the new jordans are fake leather. But no way to find out
i know this video is old, but just want to point out that the PU coating on the split grain leather are for protecting the leather and make them more durable. PU coating itself is not faux leather.
as far as how to tell if you have real leather vs synthetic leather; the easiest way is to take your finger nail and pick at the edge of the leather panel.

I actually wanna know if the fake unauthorized replica Jordans are made with fake leather.

Great topic, definitely helped educate me. Although the split grain leather apparently is the lowest grade I think?
Id easily pay more for better leathers
We pay more for the jumpman that's it. Quality will always suck.
do those knicks foams have black instead of blue? If so how did u get them? thx & excellent video!! Newer ppl should go back & watch this!!
& now look. Beautiful OG cement 4s.. 2016 should be good to say the least
Split grain is the lowest quality. Think about it from a strength perspective. The top layer (full grain) is where all the strength is. There is alot of debat and not much info on durabuck , from my understanding after a run of digging the rev. Ferrari 14 upper is durabuck ..

I have to admit ive got about 15 jordans and the quality isnt as bad as people say i wear every single 1of the and all are still in perfect condition.
@heskicks Great insightful vid bro as ever. I'm loving all the QS sneakers quality but often I've found regular GR drops were somewhat of a lesser quality. What did you find? As ever massive love & support from over here in Scotland #SneakerFamWorldWide

Yeah I'd pay more. OG Chicagos from 1985 have a fake leather at the top of the heel and that's the part that always looks worn and broken.
If the Jordan brand would use real leather, the sneakers would cost double/tripple the price. ALL materials are synthetic, there is no leather on these Chinese made sneakers.
Really?
I personally dont give a fuck about the jordan quality, because its not that bad. It could be alot worse and it is getting better

No, we did not pay more for full grain back in the old days, they should stop cutting corners and go back to the quality.
Could you ever see Jordan Brand doing retros with not neccesarily a hyperfuse but more of a updated material
Glad u are objective and did your research cause most people speculate and then others take it as fact. People talk bout quality but don't show em worn out. Just nit pick. Synyhwtic leather os mored durable than real.mercedes cars are said to have the best leather even though its fake. Real leather peels and fades.
I didn't like the material used on the fire red 5s 2013 release ,I thought it was cheap leather and it looked shiny and it wasn't smooth but that's my opinion nice vid hes
U can often tell by looking at the thickness of the leather on the stitch line
I feel you. I still cant find it on a peculiar shoe.
Acetone will tell you real leather from fake leather: example; the tongue on the 3's are synthetic (and most tongues that appear to be leather)
Does aj 6 infeared come wit faux leather model?
It is Nikes fault though! 100%! There is nothing holding them back from labeling the materials used in their products.

I don't think I would pay more for a higher quality of leather, as you pointed out the difference is hardly noticeable and you would be paying based only on your knowledge of the shoe, rather than the experience of it. I think overall ignorance is bliss in this subject. Also what websites were you checking the description of the Jordans?
the way of wades are the only modern basketball sneaker made out of leather
they actually make 'lower grade' hyperfuse that is thinner and only two layers....
Lol 8 year later snkers AF1 premium + any other Nike shoe with the premium word added to it
Top dollar for bottom grade materials 👀
Thats what the ppl don't understand, ppl do think og's were flawless and that makes me think did they ever owned any bcuz i remembered flawed og's. Same problems with glue down to scratches and scuffs on the paint. Og's.had great leather but other than that there no different then the retros.
But great video man. Keep up the good ideas and discussions
Great video hes, learned a lot
I think its a shame how Jordan Brand charges so much for such a low quality shoe. The reality is everyone, including myself, will pay ridiculous prices for a retro because we love the shoes. And Jordan Brand will keep raising the prices while lowering the quality. Why?Because the retros sell out in a couple hours every single time. Just wanted to speak my peace a little bit. Thanks
People buying $12 shoes for $230-$2000+ is insane. 8000+% mark up
you couls stripe down the p.u with acetone to get the real leather under
And its a polyurethane coat placed ontop of the split grain leather
To answer your question, I would actually pay more for fake leather because it's fucked up to make other animals suffer so we can unnecessarily wear their skin on our feet.
Same....
That's not fucked up because it's how we stay warm thoes materials are there to be use. If a lion kills a rabbit is it fucked up no.
bigb47 lol we've been doing that since the beginning of time
Maybe for you its not fucked up.
Great discussion video!
Lets just got on a sneaker strike
The Bin series uses one of the highest quality leather. IMO
Knowing what materials are made would also i think make people think about what there paying for
I wouldn't pay anymore, we are already paying the premium price with something that is not real
the quality of leather used on the new fire red 5 retros is inexcusable and an insult to consumers. they can at least use an average leather we are paying $160 for a shoe that costs them a lot less than that to make. they are getting away with it now but the poor quality will catch up with them...then they will make a change
I hope the taxi 12 has full grain leather
Remember all the jays 1-28 all black that had the better leather
You should've put in the white cement 4s. Those have the hardest leather
Just buy a pair of asics reebok or new balances and feel the quality of suede/leather
No, the current price is already too high for most of today's cheap leather shoes. I will accept a change that paying the current price but for a higher quality material. Definitely not like your idea to pay even more for an upgraded material.
They do regulate it, they have officials that stay in those foreign countries.
Anyone know what website is that???
Jordan brand has good leather quai 5 motorsport 6's they use it when they feel like it
What website was that
Good topic and I learned a lot.
Damn, I'm too new of a sub! DJ Hes!
They're all fake dude, always have been, the sportswear Giants are selling us fast food sneakers for good money.
The only way to know if something is leather is by smelling the material
Carlos Rodriguezc no lol
leather creeps me out. to wear mammal. I would rather have recycled plastic and bamboo. so... what about the cloned leather grown in a laboratory with no cow?
i think synthentic is better! i like the stiffness
there is alot of sneakers nike make from leather: dunks, sb, af1, soccer boots, some air max etc...
u are just looking at all the hyped up bball sneakers eg. bron, kb, kd etc... which leads to ur conclusion, sneakers now days are made from other materials...
which is not true at all
I think all jordans except for special releases like the don cs use fake leather
ipwnukazu are you stupid
Check out videos by Rancourt they make extremely high quality dress shoes with high grade leathers they have several vids that are highly educational about leathers n how to put together a shoe
i'm referring to the 3 on the left.
We pay enough as it is and we deserve better quality without a price spike. Will it happen? Helll no lol
There isn't a grading system for the leather becuz 99% of the people buying sneakers don't really care. If sneakers were made with the worst materials in the world they would still sell out.
