    Power plants use blankets on their steam turbines. By the way, I love your approach by testing everything.

    On my 12 valve, I had a blanket on both the exhaust manifold and turbine housing, plus I wrapped the
    exhaust pipe with heat tape ending where the pipe went over the rear axle. The difference in responsiveness was so big it was hard to believe. After it warmed up the boost gauge showed up 3/4 lb of boost at idle. Peak boost was reached sooner and the rise in egts was slower. The temps under the hood dropped quite a bit as well.

    The physics behind a turbo blanket is that if you can keep more of the thermal energy of the exhaust gas in the housing, that thermal energy will be converted into mechanical energy driving the turbo instead of escaping under the hood. Hotter gasses create more pressure and pressure drives the wheel. This is why the down pipe is normally 200-300 degrees cooler than the manifold on an EGT gauge, because some of the energy goes to driving the turbo.

    It's a valid point. Next time, you might look at testing turbo blankets on a compound turbo setup, and a VGT turbo. It would interesting to see what difference the turbo configuration makes, if any. Great video; Thanks!

    Great video and cool to see results! The few mods ive done were to reduce spool time on an he351. Overall hp #’s dont mean squat on a tow rig if it takes twice as long to build the boost.

    This is super useful. I'm putting an s300/400 compound setup on my duramax here in Utah and it came with a blanket fit the s480 I wasn't going to put it on but now I think I will.

    I'm not surprised by the difference on the large laggy turbo. It has time to heat soak the housing and begin to dissipate with the long lug in the beginning of the run. It would be interesting to see how much they do on a quick spooling turbo. I bet it would still make a sizable difference on a street truck or a tow rig that is running high egts often. Still an awesome video love all of the great info you guys have brought to the diesel world. Can't wait to see ya at UCC!

    It may be less on a diesel due to the lower EGTs, but on a spark ignition engine they certainly do make a very noticeable difference to spool and general turbo response in my experience.

    I really like your videos and the information you share. Engineering Expained did a 17 minute video about a year ago that contains some good information about turbo blankets. Information on a test with a controlled dino and a Cummins diesel engine about 8 minutes into the video.

    Oh yeah, turbo blankets definitely make a big difference. Not only do they keep your engine bay cooler for a little while longer they also make your turbo spool faster even though they don't really add power. Because the turbo spools faster that means you accelerate faster simply adding a turbo blanket can take a good chunk of time off of your 0 to 60, especially if the turbo you are using has internal heat shielding. Adding a wrapped exhaust manifold can make it even more dramatic

    Yea I removed a lot of those insulating blankets and had to reinstall them on steam piping at a power plant . interesting the D11 high track cat has the insulation on the exhaust manifolds and turboes . I sure helped keep the temps under control in the engine bay .

    I didnt even suspect that faster spooling could be a benefit from a turbo blanket. Now I have now seen it reliably reported for the second time. In the scientific world I believe that is considered as proven. I was only interested initialy in lowering under bonnet temps for a WRX.

    Fascinating. I ceramic coated the HX-30w on my CPL1839 Cummins before I popped it into my old 77 Ferd "shipping crate" years ago for aesthetic purposes. Ceramic coating helps reduce thermionic emissions, so I'd be really interested into discovering what the "spool-up" time factor reduction is. I'm betting way less than the blankets - but the principle should still apply.

      @@pddofficial I'm only an EE - so take this with a mine of salt - but I think what is happening is that by keeping post turbo Temps heated via the blanket, the higher exit temperature results in lower back pressure in the exducer which results in quicker spooling.
      A pertinent test would be to do exactly what you just did and simultaneously measure the intake charge temperature. If the Delta T (change in temperature) ratio in charge temperature is congruent with the Delta T of your exhaust temperature with the blankets - you have yourselves positive correlation.

      @@pddofficial Yes. You can do the Intercooler side as well. So, if you placed an EGT sensor near the turbo exhaust flange, and then placed another sensor right at the end of the wrap - you would be able to see the change in exhaust temperature between those two points. Then, make a series of pulls with the wrap on and off. If you see that the change in temperature between the two sensors correlates with the change in spool time - you could theorize that the spool time correlates to the change in exhaust temperature (condensing of air) . You can also use that data to "tune" the wrap length. On the intercooler side, you could place a sensor at the turbo outlet and another at the intercooler inlet and repeat the same test to see if, by reducing the drop in air charge temperature near the turbo, if it increases the time to spool. I suspect that by reducing the temperature drop near the inducer and exducer - you'll reduce the condensing of the air charge and the exhaust, which should reduce the drag on the turbo.

    Isx 15 in a semi . Drove mine for over 500 000 miles . Last 100 000 miles drove with a blanket. Power gain sooner. Didn’t notice power gain with my butt Dino. But always seem to build up power sooner . Driven under same load and route . If I don’t take advantage of this boost gain I would burn less fuel. In regards to cool down times . Unknown. Always cool semi down for about 15 minutes before shut off for the night. Turbo has 600 000 + miles on it. Runs like a champ. Engine bay temps stay cooler . Engine it self stays cooler. Had to replace blanket after one year . About 120 000 miles after initially installed. Couple of fiberglass layers burned through. Cheap product or improperly installed. Both probably. As blanket fit poorly. Turbo was too big for it. Next project. Is heat wrap the pipe. From turbo and down. Thanks for great video. I knew that by butt dyno wasn’t too far off.

    Best way to keep the heat in the turbine and manifold is to get it coated and then heat warp it even use that OEM heat shielding from newer vehicle's, cut it up to fit then fold the edges over after add the blanket over it . Track race cars have to done 24 hour racing dtm , wtcc list goes on . but ive seen drag racers use this now . Also helps alot with under bonnet temperatures . A high performance or any engines don't like heat stoke or even hot air

      I agree. Should compare underhood temps, intake air temps, egt and egt cooldown rate. My big question: Do blankets benefit in spool time but hurt long pull EGTs? In other words. Are blankets a good benefit for drag racing and a hinderence for towing?

      No, they work great towing. Keeps the heat in and everything else cooler. What I love most about towing is it keeps my feet much cooler in the summer when towing. Manifolds, up pipes, and down pipe wrapped in DEI lava wrap, with a DEI blanket on a GT4202R.

    I think if he did more than one run with the blanket on you would see more results. it would help hold the heat in from the previous run. Gear to gear lag would be improved... boost threshold what you guys were actually testing would be better. One run and one run isn't really enough data to have any concrete results.

    I know this was a quick back-to-back test but it would be great to see ceramic coating as one of the variables, is it more effective than the blankets alone and what happens if you do both? Nice work guys keep it up!

      For someone on a budget, looking to throw a new manifold and turbo on a mild motor, makes you wonder if it's worth the extra money & hassle to ceramic coat both

    My water temps would creep to over 100C in traffic. I just put a turbo beanie on. Under bonnet temps are soooooo much better. Also reduced my water temps by around 5-7 degrees in traffic. Much more stable, PLUS it seems to be a bit more responsive too! Turbo's a EFR9180.

    Probably a good idea on a test like that to do a non test run first to heat soak everything then wait the same amount of time between the test runs.

    Look into ram air charged charge cooling between your turbo to intercooler.
    Think of how Harley Davidson pipes suck cool air to not blue the chrome, now invert that to your primary charge pipe, from ram air induction for cooling.

    Mmm interesting, we've always run blankets, beanies whatever you want to call them on our big HP engines ( 50 Litre 1800hp up) but never really assessed the difference, if any but certainly noticed the difference if one was incorrectly installed or left off in as much as heat damage to surrounding components especially any wiring or non silicon hosing

    What's the concern for hydrogen embrittlement of the turbos and exhaust manifolds? Blankets also contribute to heat-soak and don't allow the metal to cool off in an efficient manner. Right?

    Is the result only significant on larger Turbos or does it also work on Smaller, stock turbo applications ? I have a 63mm DP on 1.4T Suzuki Swift Sport and I feel its a bit large and actually slows down the speed of Exhaust gasses, so will a Blanket Retain more Heat in the Housing, keeping gases hotter and speeding up the flow, increasing responsiveness ?

    You know whats funny?? My 24 valve common rail in my boat has a water cooled exhaust manifold and a water cooled turbo. Thats done to keep under deck ( engine bay ) temps way down. They still make good power.

      @@pddofficial The turbine housing,,, Its a HX40 with the marine hot side. I have the 5.9 version and its 355 hp. The Common rail 5.9 is available from 230 to 480 hp and the 6.7 is available from 230 to 550 hp.

    Great test! It's easy for me to say but... I'd like to see it taken a step or 2 further. Add ceramic coating, retest. Add ceramic coating and heat wrap, retest. Add ceramic coating, heat wrap, and blankets, test again. How far until you get diminishing returns?

      Most ceramic coatings advise not to wrap causing it will cause it to degrade.

    So i am building a 6.0 powerstroke with a Borg Warner s366sxe turbo and 250/150 conventionals, would i see a similar result with that setup as you guys did on your truck?

    How much affect do you think wrapping the first foot or two of the downpipe would have?

      First 3 feet of pipe is recommended for heavy duty diesels, I'd guess that smaller diesels would likely see similar benefit. Exhaust wrap is cheaper then the fancy blankets so while the effect is not as large neither is the price tag. I run turbo blanket and exhaust wrap on both of my 3406e cats.

      @@pddofficial I'd say it is worthy of a test. I would expect an improvement. How much I'm not sure. All about keeping that exhaust velocity up by not letting it cool down until it has left the system (exhaust).

    How much duse egt/spool correlation get affected?
    -100°f drop accrost the bord for me. AKA 600=1psi naked 500=1psi full wrap just ahort of the injectors
    Just got done (4am) installing an Industrial hx35w12 on my 1st gen. Had to unwrap 75' of double thick header wrap, turns out I had 4 layers on the manifold. Driving under hood Temps went from 350 to about 120 IR temp gun says turbine housing went from 600 Degrees melt your skin 190 touch it for a few seconds no blisters at the top of the grade. turbine housing had a single layer and basalt/Ti blanket . We'll see tomorrow how much hotter the underhood is getting a baseline for spool characteristics on hx35 vs h1c.

      Hx35w/12 = 1psi @350 egt in park (just of idle )no wrap. Massave improvement. 10 psi by the time the back tires gets to were the fronts were. H1c / 16 fullwrap was about a hundred feet, no wrap ~ 175' , the h1c 21 250' -350'. City Driving in Ogden will be less aggravating in the future for me no more power breaking at and holding at 800 EGT at 5 PSI to make a left turn to hit the hole in traffic( 24th Street and Antelope in Layton are the worst , all the lights are set up flashing yellow during the daytime when the protected left-turn is most needed and you get a green solid in the middle of the night when there's nobody out there and then you got to wait till light cycles[ somebody wanted to improve the profit margins at the cost of safety]).

    Yall need to start putting 13cm hx52s on your daily's. Best daily 500hp turbo out there for a 5spd truck. 50psi by 2k rpm

      @@pddofficial they are a 67/70/13 or for more top end you can get a 16cm housing. Factory billet wheel, stock hx35 oil drain can be used (bent a little) They are the oem turbo on volvo d12 engines in OTR trucks. They're also stupid cheap. If you pay 600 for a rebuilt one you over paid

      Contrary to the way it seems it actually reduces heat, by keeping the exhaust gas hotter it keeps it moving faster which in turn reduces heat transfer to the components.

      He answers that question with the Dyno information which is far.kore accurate then a boost gauge.

      @@jaydunbar7538 then the turbo blanket information was really weird because it made less horsepower made it sooner but less. I drive a truck with a set of compounds on it 6471 12 over s480 I was wondering if this would help with lag.

    just remember cheap ones are itchy as fuck. also about to buy a 24v vp truck what is the fastest spooling compound setup i was thinking stock over s369sxe. bd has old school 66mm towing twins would a stock over s366sxe work good. they only got fuel for 600-650 and are rpm limited

    I was always told DO NOT use a blanket. The reasoning is coking the oil from insufficient cool down for the turbo.

      @@pddofficial so after I made the comment I did some searches on the old interwebs...some people say it's ok just do a cool down for a few minutes after hard driving which most diesel drivers do already (I hope). Then there is a lot of people who are flat against it due to bearing failure from coking the oil. I'd say if a few HP makes or breaks you go for it. Myself personally being a diesel generator mechanic for the last 25 years and one of the top generator companies (kohler) recommends no blankets for this reason is sufficient for myself. I really enjoy your videos and how you incorporate your employees and their vehicles. Gives you a real experience unlike most channels where what they are doing is unattainable.

      @@doughopkinsjr Comparing your experience in generators doesn't really correlate to vehicles. All genset manufacturers operate extremely conservative. The charger and fuel rates are set for a given power. They are not looking for the fastest spool up since the engines are already running at the rated RPM when the ATS transfers the load. EGT's under full load are probably around 1100-1200 max. Most never see full load in normal operation. They are not terribly concerned about containing the radiant heat either. They all have timed cool down periods before shut down. In my opinion the coked bearing warning is more of a wives tale of long ago. Oils were not as good, operators may not have been as astue as they should have been. Get a farmer that doesn't change the oil on his first turbo equipped engine and blames the turbo for the failure... In summary they are conservative. Operating well within all safety margins, they are not going to recommend, or require a blanket. Now go talk to the marine industry. See them standard equipment on a lot of engines. Engines that run at full load for hours. They want that heat going out the exhaust and not causing issues in the engine room.

    regardless if it works or not 1 run on 1 run off means nothing many thing could have made that difference like just engine temp there a reason why you make 3 tests each way.but thanks for sharing anyway

    This doesn't really count.
    As you've only done this one test.
    To determine if it works (a theory) you'd have to do multiple tests in multiple environments and situations.
    This is moot.
