  • Wayyyy back in 1987-88, I was playing this a lot... the passage of time has introduced various challenges to replicate those younger articulate days (!) but I thought I'd give it a go once more. 'Breakout' was, and is, such a cheery & beautifully-constructed track. It epitomised the 'Sophisti-Pop' of that era and set the talented duo of Corinne Drewery & Andy Connell onwards to produce some fabulous further material. Delighted they're still going strong...
Recorded here with a Musicman Stingray Classic and Thomastik Jazz flatwounds, via a Boss GT-1B tweaked with some envelope filters.

I must confess that I listen to your most excellent rendition of this beautiful song at least 3 times daily.
Of all the bass covers of Breakout, yours is by far the best and second place isn’t even on the same planet. The Musicman bass, along with the settings on your bass effects box, are absolutely perfect for this song, offering just the right amount of growl and bottom end to seal the deal.
Keep on keeping on and stay awesome, sir!😃👍🏻👍🏻

I first got turned on to SOS when I was stationed in Germany. I’d always go to the burger bar across from my dorm and have breakfast after a mid-shift. In the burger bar’s dining room, they had a video juke box with only for different songs available on it… SOS-Breakout, Fleetwood Mac-Little Lies, George Harrison-Fab and I cannot pull up the last one, but I digress.
The point is that out of the 3 aforementioned available, Breakout ended up being my favorite. I played it so often, it got to the point that the staff at the restaurant knew I was there before they’d even see me because I’d put my quarter in and start jamming before I’d hit the counter to place my Ham & Cheese Omlette order.
That was definitely a fun time to be alive!😃

I would think the bassline in the original is played on a synth, no?
