  • OMG.... so much to say and I'm so tired. I wanted to release this video after doing three shorts that lead into this but it got stuck in youtube's copyright system. Now here I am 5 days later and like 13 different versions into the video here we are. The worst part is that I have so many issues with the video like the cadence of my voice suggest I'm going to continue the topic of the sentence only to drop the train of thought entirely in the next sentence and after having to butcher so much of the edits to get it past the copyright system... idk
Its done I learned a lot from this video so if you enjoyed it good on you and if you didn't still good on you.
ok i love you bye bye
p.s. Kung Fu Panda 4 hype!!

I honestly love Kung Fu Panda 3 even if it isn’t the most dramatic end to the series. I think it still has a lot of heart despite being what I would consider the weakest one.

Excellent video. But to be fair, Kai's story isn't about him changing, rather about Oogway. Oogway changed to good from grey area, Kai turned evil from grey, since they were both warriors who planned to defend the country and kill thousands of enemies in the process according to history.

Great video honestly and I agree with all your changes. I would also have changed Po being comically dismissive of Mr. Ping once Li-Shan shows up, since it's kinda hard to believe he'd be like that after the arc of Po coming to truly appreciate Ping as a father in KFP 2. I do like the conclusion of that plotline with Ping and Li-Shan teaming up though

I really do think Kai is the perfect example of the statement "more power doesn't make a better villain." Despite being the most powerful villain until the chameleon BY FAR, he doesn't carry anywhere near the same menace that Shen or Tai Lung do. He ends up beating Po (until spirit realm ex machina) and still ends up looking like a joke because once Po has chi, Kai wasn't able to touch him. Not even a single hit afterwards. At least Shen got a few hits in on the ship and Tai Lung was going even. The fight coreography for every fight before then was amazing, but the final one is just completely one sided and makes the most powerful villain look like a pushover. JK Simmons did a brilliant job, but the way characters treat him like a joke just makes him way less intimidating. Po constantly interrupting him while Kai doesn't do anything, the characters just asking who he is and then talking about Oogway, Kai just... For a series that has had some brilliant villains, including my second favorite villain in all of fiction, Shen, Kai was just such a disappointment as a villain despite the power.
Edit: Now this isn't me saying I like nothing about Kai. The fact he uses ranged weapons, his overall size being so huge and imposing, the way he mixes Shen's mid combat taunting and mocking with Tai Lung's all business while fighting attitude, he's not a bad villain, he's just a huge drop down from Tai Lung and Shen. Also, another thing to clarify, I still really like Kung Fu Panda 3. It's not the greatest, but it's good. Nothing will ever compare to Kung Fu Panda 2 for me (I mean, the second is literally in my top 5 favorite movies of all time, currently at third place, only after the two Spiderverse movies), so I set my expectations more along the area of a bit worse than the first, but not by much. And while it didn't end up being as amazing as the first nor reach the nigh perfection of the second, it was still solid and enjoyable.

Really great video! Not sure about Kais redemption tho, especially because it might contradict the theming of the 4th movie as far as we know.
Besides this I also think that Kai has to be seen in a light where he's just a bad person. Or at least like they insinuate that. Him and Oogway being war generals and Kai just taking the chi for no reason... Yeah seems like they were both just villains but the pandas made Oogway see the light and he redeemed himself, whereas Kai stayed villainous. Even as is it leads somewhat nice into the supposed themes of 4.
I do love the Kai backstory changes you made though, just gives a lot more substance and theming to the movie & makes it all come full-circle. And even as more of just a villain, I think it works. He's a war general, ofc you're not gonna give everyone these powers, that's dumb and will only create more wars, and because he's presumably looking for conquering and power, that'll only make that harder. In that regard his fear is still legit, but with a more selfish undertone. But in the end he still has a point.
Imo they couldve also focused more on Oogways and Kais relationship, as they wanna convince you they were really close, but we never see them interact in that bond. So I think some small flashbacks for that wouldve been nice. Also makes Kais feelings of betrayal more legit.

this is SUCH an insanely good analysis of this movie and how it could have been improved. i loved the bit about how there is no "fixing" art, and i appreciate this analysis as a largely objective description of ways that elements of the writing could have been re-done or bolstered in such a way that it would create a starker, more dramatic and more emotional sense of emotional gravity and theme.
my favorite thing though is the idea of kai being "a boogeyman," who comes to punish those who (from his unreliable perspective!! LOVE me an unreliable narrator) are "misusing" the power of chi and kung fu. with the way the movie is now, i really just felt like i couldn't take him seriously as a villain since his motives were so shallow and he wasn't related to the story themes the way the previous kfp villains were - i actually laughed when he goes "i am a SPIRIT WARRIOR" bc it just sounded like he was trying too hard to be scary. but oh man, put into the context of him ACTUALLY having a presence as the shadow haunting china and the practice of chi? THEN that title would have been SOOO effective. THAT would be someone who could call themselves a Spirit Warrior and sound completely terrifying when they do.
edit: ALSO!!! oh my GOD the idea of po sympathizing with kai and actually changing his mind!! that would be SUCH a creative way to use the rule of three within the trilogy!!! po tries to sympathize with tai lung, and it doesn't work, and po tries to sympathize with lord shen, and it doesn't work, but po tries to sympathize with kai - here, at the end of the trilogy, and this time, he is able to get through to him. this would be PHENOMENAL

On top of changing the villain, I would have changed how Po's arc of becoming a teacher would play out.
The story doesn't so much as build towards it's conclusion and as it seems to just arrive to it. Most of the scenes in the panda village feel like filler since they don't seem to contribute anything to Po's story. I get the joke of Tigress being confused as to how Po became a confident kung fu teacher, but I'm just as confused as she is.
Let's say, hypothetically, there was a small child who has given up trying to fit in with the other children. Maybe she has a disability, maybe she's shy or anxious and Po empathizes with her because he knows what it's like to be underestimated by other people he wanted to be like. And so, in a few scenes he helps build her confidence and teaches her that even if she can't do what others could do, she can still stand out in her own way. When he sees her again seeing how far she's come towards the end, that's when he gets his epiphany of "turning you into you" since kung fu is about self-improvement.
Maybe that same panda is the one that gets attached to Tigress.

Here's how i would do kai so of course have more serious moments with him to have him be more threatening have everyone know about him instead of that gag of no one knowing him the main thing i want to tap into is his backstory giving more reason and depth to it: Long before Po became the Dragon Warrior, whispers of a terrifying warrior named Kai echoed throughout the land. Legends spoke of his unmatched strength and a devastating technique that stole the Chi from his opponents, leaving them as a green amulet showing Kai's rise to power.
Centuries ago, Kai and Oogway, then formidable warriors themselves, led their respective armies in a brutal war. Their contrasting styles Kai's brutal potency with Oogway's efficient defensive style created tension.
During the war oogway was became heavily wounded so kai carried him for days look for a place to heal his wounds he then stumbles upon a panda village (not a secret village lets have it not be a secret ok), they stumbled upon the panda village- the home of the peaceful pandas. These gentle creatures possessed a unique connection to Chi, unlike anything they'd ever seen. Kai, fascinated by their power, envisioned it as a weapon to end the war swiftly.
Oogway, however, cautioned against exploiting such a power, emphasizing the importance of balance and respecting the pandas' pacifistic nature only using it for defense or healing . This disagreement deepened the rift between them. As the war reached its climax, Kai, consumed by a warped sense of duty and blinded by the desire for victory, disregarded Oogway's warnings. He stormed the panda village, intending to forcefully steal their Chi.
The pandas, despite their peaceful nature, were no strangers to kung fu They had used some of their prowess When Kai attacked, the pandas fought back valiantly.
However, Kai's ruthlessness and immense power proved too much for them. He effortlessly defeated the pandas, draining their Chi and leaving some as amulets. The battle left the panda valley scarred and exposed.Oogway arrived to find Kai laying waste to the pandas. Realizing Kai's actions had endangered the pandas and the peace he'd sworn to protect, Oogway acted decisively. With a heavy heart, he used his immense power to create a barrier, protecting the valley and the weakened pandas. he also used chi offensively to fight back against kai due to how formidable he was as an adversary temporarily going against his word of only using it for healing and balance further showing sacrifice and his resolve to making things right by any means necessary
The strain of channeling this power left Oogway severely weakened but conscious. Using the last vestiges of his strength, Oogway banished Kai to the Spirit Realm, hoping to contain the threat and end the cycle of violence. The war left its mark on everyone. Kai was banished, consumed by anger and hatred. Oogway carried the burden of his choice, forever weakened. The pandas, though safe, were shaken. Their defeat highlighted their limitations against such a formidable opponent. This event became a dark chapter in their history, a reminder of the outside world's potential for violence and the importance of preserving their unique connection to Chi. As the story progresses, it's revealed that Kai seeks not just victory, but to rewrite history how he sees fit.
He believes the world is filled with wasted potential and desires to control all Chi to reshape it in his twisted vision by taking all the masters chi from all of China turning them into jade zombies recreating his own army to compensate for what he lost in the war.
have Po defeat kai the way he originally did in the film that was great don't change that With Kai defeated once more, Po reflects on the history of the pandas and the importance of preserving their unique connection to Chi. He returns to the Jade Palace, a more confident teacher, ready to share the knowledge he gained with a renewed appreciation for the past. The legend of Kai serves as a reminder of the dangers of unchecked ambition and the importance of maintaining balance. That's how i think the story should of went

Lastly The Themes of kung Fu panda and fixing the 3rd:
Po believed in himself and found self worth without needing the dragon scroll Tai lung thought his worth relied on the dragon scroll Tai lung was never gonna be fulfilled because he relied on outside source and not himself to gain satisfaction Tai lung would have been destined to through a fit because even if he got the scroll back then he would get pissed that nothing was in it and would have still destroyed the valley like he did in the movie. So he it's about the present
Part 2 Po accepts his past while shen can't which leads into Po having peace of mind and further advancing as a person while shen loses because as oogway said “one often meets their destiny on the road they take to avoid it” what happens to shen recontextualize that quote so that's the past also Po and she backstorys are interwoven the best both directly impacted by each other when having personal connection to Po backstory
so part 3 should be about future as you said and how the movie tried to do how I would focus on legacy aspect (which you did good on in your video by the way it's just my adaptation of it) Kai focusing on his legacy of the past trying to make everything he deems as right rewriting it for the future in his own way for evil Po his legacy of the future via training teaching others kung Fu for greater good obviously through kai point of view it's good but objectively from viewer POV it's evil also when talking about legacy it can involve past present and future which would make all three movies come full circle 😀 Kai focusing on how he can make a better future from his past failure Po thinking bout how he can make a better future from his present

Kung fu panda 3 shrank the universe. A thousand years long history of kung fu and there has been only a handful of masters which a villageful of ostensibly impecile pandas took down with ease. They belittle life and death and consequences of one’s action, they spoiled to tone instead of setting up something profound and nuanced, they failed to utilize from the concept of chi

Hello sorry to bother you it's me again the guy that rewrote Kai's backstory I now rewrote the movie (Any part I don't mention of the movie that needs changing means it's perfectly fine also I'm going in order of how the movie goes from start to end as much as possible ) when Po talks to shifu in the beginning just alter the dialogue a bit instead of shifu saying "you don't even know who you are" change it too"you know who you are now yes?" Po says "yes I'm dragon Warrior and I come from a family of pandas" then shifu replies with "good but now is your next and final step becoming a teacher" that way it doesn't sound like retreating from the second movie when kai meets rabbit and duck remove the joke of them not knowing kai to make him feel threatening have presents honestly just remove that whole gag entirely out of the film. When shifu reads oogway scroll about kai have it be the backstory I put make it 3.5-5 minutes of the movie tops so we really get the detail of who they are as people and what happened. So here's the backstory:
Legends spoke of kai and his unmatched strength and a devastating technique that stole the Chi from his opponents, leaving them as a green amulet showing Kai's rise to power.
Centuries ago, Kai and Oogway, then formidable warriors themselves, led their respective armies in a brutal civil war of master's that wanted to take over china including oogway, oogway and the other masters where tyrants fighting for that land back then. Their contrasting styles Kai's brutal potency with Oogway's efficient defensive style is what made them respect each other but also created tension. They found value in each other technique and skill and decided to team up and became allies
During the war oogway became heavily wounded so kai carried him for days look for a place to heal his wounds he then stumbles upon the secret panda village they stumbled upon the panda village- the home of the peaceful pandas. These gentle creatures possessed a unique connection to Chi, unlike anything they'd ever seen and healed oogway the panda's taught both kai and oogway to do chi and their kindness made oogway want to change his ways for good. Kai, fascinated by their power, envisioned it as a weapon to end the war swiftly together with oogway.
Oogway, however, cautioned against exploiting such a power, emphasizing the importance of balance and respecting the pandas' pacifistic nature only using it for defense and or healing . This disagreement deepened the rift between them. As the war reached its climax, Kai, consumed by a warped sense of duty and blinded by the desire for victory, kai disregarded Oogway's warnings. He stormed the panda village, intending to forcefully steal their Chi.
Kai's ruthlessness and immense power proved too much for them. He effortlessly defeated the pandas, draining their Chi and leaving some as amulets. The event left the panda valley scarred and exposed.Oogway arrived to find Kai laying waste to the pandas. Realizing Kai's actions had endangered the pandas and the peace he'd sworn to protect, Oogway acted decisively. With a heavy heart, he used his immense power to create a barrier, protecting the valley and the weakened pandas who remained. he also used chi offensively to fight back against kai due to how formidable he was as an adversary temporarily going against his word of only using it for healing and balance further showing sacrifice and his resolve to making things right by any means necessary
Oogway carried the burden of his choice, forever weakened physically and emotionally. The pandas, though safe, were shaken Their defeat highlighted their limitations against such a formidable opponent. This event became a dark chapter in their history, a reminder of the outside world's potential for violence and the importance of preserving their unique connection to Chi kai can only be stopped by a master of chi.
When po gets to the village the panda village is happy to see him shorten it them eating dinner having family reunion food having funand talking make it 2 minutes tops of movies run time or so and Po tells them what they been up to pandas respond and then talk bout how they passed down their chi and stuff and how some survived shen cut out the other stuff with Mei the dancer and other panda sheninegans there's nothing wrong with it it just feels like filler.
then next day have po dad tell him to wake up it's time to train Po excited gets ready cut to the scene where crane and mantis have to go and find kai have that scene play out the same just change up Kai's dialogue a bit saying "with your chi and mantis I'll make a better world" so now we get back to Po we get some exposition of the pandas saying how as time went on they found different ways to utilize chi and how he needs to learn how to do all 3 ways first and initial way is healing second use it to enhance physical strength for offense and 3rd able to turn chi into a construct (I got the construct Idea from the finale of the movie when Po has a giant chi dragon) removing the plot line of them not remembering how to use chi cuz come on man that shit was dumb (in the moviethey state it was meant for healing but what they don't say that is still a thing that can happen is that people use it differently kai and tigress for fighting tigress actually used it to kick kai which increased her potency and hurt him in the scene where kai attacks the jade palace so Imma focus and use those minor scenes into the plot and therefore fleshing them out still keeping it original to how the movie was just making it better) Po learns the original iteration first which is healing he then learns offense from another division of panda's then it's night time fast forward to night time Po dad congratulates Po to on his progress and that tommrow he'll learn his final step Po thanks his dad and everyone,
next morning Po trains with the others I'm removing tigress finding the secret villagecuz it makes no sense now because of this change Imma just say she got captured by kai as well when he attacked so instead of that it's this) suddenly three of Kai's jombies attack and arrive to the village which interupts po's training so he goes and fights them only a few of panda's (which are the ones that use chi to boost their strength) go and fight with Po due to most pandas not knowing how to fight or any Kung Fu they pin them down and the guys that use chi as constructs tie them up Po sees how panda's In the village where scared so he realizes he needs to teach them Kung Fu so this is where he teaches them to be you and we leave that whole scene the same and when kai meets Po have him talk to Po without being interrupted with the "chiity chat chat" joke
here is where Po and the audience get the full scope of Kai's motivation and plan in the movie He believes the world is filled with wasted potential and desires to control all Chi to reshape it in his vision by first defeating them giving him a sense of victory from what he didnt obtain in the war and taking all the masters chi from all of China turning them into jade zombies recreating his own army to compensate for what he lost in the war. then keep the final act the same which is the panda village vs the jombies and keep mostly the same but with a few differences
later (have no jokes their either) when Po find out he can't skadoosh kai to the spirit realm alter dialogue a bit have kai say something like "sorry to disappoint you but that won't work I'm a immortal being" which maintains the seriousness then keep the deleted scene where he beats Po to death(you can search that deleted scene up by the way man it's raw I wish they kept that in) which sends him to the spirit realm instead of the whish finger hold cuz not only does that up the stakes but it also low-key gives kai an iconic scene in the movie just like the other villains it also makes more sense on how Po got to the spirit realm instead of skadooshing himself and again it's making him feel like a threat. then keep the final act the same Po beating kai in a silly and goofy way with his giant chi dragon like in the original cuz it's great and still need a few laughs from that point and onward till the end keep it all the same because remember it's a good movie isn't bad just needs fine tuning hoever it isn't as good as first two but this rewrite helps make it better from say 7.5 outta 10 to at least a 8.5-9 maybe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Also because the pandas didn't forget how to use chi in my version them using their chi to help Po in his fight with kai near the end makes much more sense
Kai defeated once more, Po reflects on the history of the pandas and the importance of preserving their unique connection to Chi. He returns to the Jade Palace, a more confident teacher, ready to share the knowledge he gained with a renewed appreciation for the past. The legend of Kai serves as a reminder of the dangers of unchecked ambition and the importance of maintaining balance. That's how i think the story should of went

I love the theme and the lessons of this movie, but i think the execution of them were half baked. I'm excited to see what you have done with it.
Yep, it's good, very interesting. BUT, i think you misunderstood some things from the original (not by your fault, the movie is terrible at conveing their message). The movie is really about who po will be and it shines light on the spiritual side, because everything changes, who will po be when he will not be able to be the dragon warrior anymore? So the movie goes about identity, but also repeat the lessons from the first movie.
Just like the first movie, there is this lesson about how everyone have a special gift amd for that they should believe in themselfs and believe in others. Po learned to believe in himself, shifu learned to believe in po, now po need to learn to believe in the pandas and they need to believe in themselfs. There is also some bits of humility and generosity, how we have the responsibility to access that gift and share it with others.
Going to Kai, he, as portrayed on the movie (although not in a good way), is someone that believe ONLY in himself. Remember that he was not only used to take things from people, but everyone loves him for it, he was invencible. But there was one thing that would eventually defeat him, death (the thing on everyone's future). The answer to that was chi, something that would make him imortal. But, of course, if the pandas shared that with anyone else, his advantage would be lost, so he needed to take them out. He expected oogway to go along with it (he also was well accustomed to taking things from others), but he didn't, this betraying Kai.
So the movie is a battle of philosophies: Oogway's philosophy that power should be perceived to make one better than itself and shared to make another one better than itself, while Kai's philosophy is that power should be perceived to make one better than the others, making the top a lonely but a safe place. So Kai's greed comes from fear of death and being forgotten ad his selfishness comes from Oogway's betrayal. He is literally defeated by po and the pandas believing in themselfs because po believed in them and them sharing their "gifts" to him, while Kai was alone.
So yeah, the movie is pretty good in themes and ideas, but terrible in execution, you did a good job tho

Yup, changing plot too much in every movie and tv show is pretty distracting, tricky, and lose connection towards the previous works based on the events and timeline. It’s better to change the tone of the story, not the plot of the story. So please: Don’t change every plot from the sequel, prequel, spin-off, extra seasons, and more, otherwise you will be responsible for the movie and tv show’s downfall.
