This is from the annual Calypso Monarch competition at the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad back in 1984. The Calypso Monarch Finals competition is a segment of the Dimanche Gras show which takes place the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and acts as an official kickoff to the Carnival. At this show, the King & Queen of Carnival Titles are also vied for along with the Calypso Monarch. The Calypso Monarch is decided based on 2 rounds of competition in which each Calypsonian is....

The Calypso Monarch used to be the highlight competition of Carnival but has fallen on the wayside due to the surge of popularity of more party-oriented Soca music. Back in 1984 Calypso and Soca were seen as one in the same. That is why you hear a Party tune like this in the video. Nowadays Calypso is more geared towards Social & Political Commentary.
