- Tamiya Holiday Buggy - Build, Run and Thoughts About It
I was gifted this Holiday Buggy by the wonderful RC Elf and it is a classic looking buggy with a more modern chassis. It is truly an entry level kit but is a wonderful addition to any collection. It is a relaxing and enjoyable kit to put together and a fun little car to drive around. I hope you enjoy the video and if you get a chance to pick one of these up I totally recommend adding one to your collection!

The folks at Axial and Horizon Hobby made a tremendous video and you really need to watch it and give those guys some love!
I thought I'd seen every rc car from the well known brands like Tamiya, but this one was new to me. Looks like a Citroën 2CV converted to a buggy and it looks really cool.
It was one of their very early cars and this is the re-release of it. They don't last in stock very long at all when they get stock so not something that shows u on websites or shops too often in the states. It is marketed as one of their beginner models but with some oil filled shocks and a 540 motor they are pretty fun to drive around. The stock 380 is ok but slow, the 540 really peps it up! The only draw back and it is not a big one is the body is not meant to be painted, it is a paint resistant plastic and you can do things to make it stick but it is a pain. So if you like it in blue it is a cool little quick kit to build! thanks for watching and glad you found something new!
Yeah they do look good too. Great to see 1 because almost nobody has a video of this built and running, great work Addam👍👌
Hi Addam I know the Video is a Year old I went straight for CVA shock´s and a Torque Tuned Motor because it´s not only way to slow with the 380Motor but also to fit this litte Plastic piece to get the Motor fitted to it was a real pain. Great Video none the less and keep going.
It is so much fun with the faster motor in it and the oil filled shocks! It becomes a whole different car completely! I'm glad you got one and are having fun with it! Thanks for stopping in and checking out the video!
Brilliant video. Great job!
I am glad you enjoyed it. It is a great buggy and with a couple upgrades it is a real ripper!
I’m on the search for an original holiday buggy, sand scorcher, or rough rider. They’re going for more coin than I wanna spend though 🤷♂️ ours is getting the Rlaarlo 550 if it fits, but not til the 1/10 buggy shootout happens 😁
Yeah the old kits go for a lot!! I don't even have re-res of the scorcher or the fighting buggy yet due to them bein pricer than most kits. I need to get one as I don't have any SRB chassis cars. One of these days!!
540 is a nice upgrade in torque and speed.
They are bad ass. They look like a legit dune buggy made from a vw
They are neat looking and the chassis underneath works well, once it has oil filled shocks on it!
Same as you, still not really keen on this buggy but after watching your video I'm now a little tempted! I think if it was released on its original chassis I'd be sold! Great video and content........you deserve way more subscribers! 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you Paul! It is a relaxing kit to build so maybe pick one up and hold onto it for one of those we all have and then put it together to unwind and decompress. But if you are like me you cannot leave it unbuilt then it is a cool little one to have in the collection that won't break the bank! Thanks for watching!!
Hello from southeast alaska.love videos
Thanks William! I appreciate that! Glad you are enjoying them!
I like tamiya cause they use alot of plastics. Fantastic for running on the beach with all that salt water.
Yes, the plastics would hold up much better than something like the Kyosho kits with all the metal bits and pieces wanting to corrode! Did you switch out for stainless screws or just clean everything well after running?
@@AddamsPlayground I just hose it down gently with very warm water. I use what Tamiya provides and they work well. I just add a bit of loctite and dont touch them until something breaks and need repair. I am a lazy RC owner.
I have seen people say to hear the plastic carefully with a blow torch to change the composition of the plastic so you can paint it. Other have used etch primer.
I bought a pair of these second hand, one is now a Baja bug and the other has a Rough Rider shell on it.
That one sounds sketchy 😂 I'd go with the spray paint over the torch. I guess if it fails you go for the Mad Max look!! Thanks for watching and for the tips.
Adam no I want to see it run off the sport tuned then the 540 please.
I enjoyed the video on the the Holidays Buggy build. You included some important tips. Thanks for doing it. I would suggest that in the future you may want to included some brief shots of the building of each section of the car. Keep up the good work.
Hey Michael, that is one thing I struggle with! I turn off the camera and start building and totally get immersed into it! I have the radio cranking and get sucked into my own little time warp of fun and next thing I know it is built and I took no photos or video of anything! I had done some videos early on with time-lapse footage but it always got skipped over by the majority of viewers so I stopped adding that in as not many seemed interested in it. I will make a note to myself (the only way I can remember things now!) to stop and do some build snips throughout them and add them into the video. Thanks for the input as this only helps me make better videos!! Thanks for watching and for the suggestion, much appreciated!
New Subscriber here 👍🏻 Been looking at the Holiday Buggy as a potential future project and liked your thoughts and comments on the 380 vs 540. I recently put a 540 in a vintage grasshopper and been regretting my decision ever since. I will look into that 380 sport tuned 🙌🏻
For the money they are pretty cool. An improvement over stock and no additional weight and for like $12 not a bad deal! Thanks for watching and appreciate you subscribing. I will be cranking out more cool stuff very soon!
Solid build! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by and checking in!
Lacquer will stick to it but you’ve gotta scuff it up
Didn't know that. I wish they would make some bodies for the buggy out of the regular plastic. I am sure they would sell thousands and thousands of them!!!
Late 80’s early 90’s here also ✋I also had no interest in these back then during rere but 10 years later and my tastes have totally flipped 180 lol. With my 12 turn in mine on track, it has been ripping the tires off the bead so I have to glue them sadly. Not a fan of glue lol. Agreed, the California sticker is still on crooked on mine, I gave up. Good chill beat choice for an innocent rc bash session. Glad you went 540, so much smiles with a bit of a step up, I made sure to order the right pinion from Tamiya, luckily I checked the manual ahead of tome online which I never do! I hope you get it fixed up proper soon. I love the wah wah noise 👀
That Elf sure is cool. Great video man, the blooper was awesome lol
Glad you liked it! I am getting more comfortable all the time with being behind the camera and talking to you guys I stead of talking to a camera. The bloopers are always there so I share them from time to time when they are good enough, otherwise just me failing to speak or think right!!! Working on improving all the time and appreciate the feedback to let me know I'm doing something right!!!!
@@AddamsPlayground i try to pretend im trying to entertain my future self and some friends, it helps me express my emotions better when speaking but I know its tough, being forced into sales positions broke my shyness but social anxiety is always there lol
Hi Addam, I hope you’re keeping well. Thank was a great video of the fabulous Holiday Buggy. For the iconic kit, I would be more inclined to leave it with the sports tuned 380 motor. I think the 540 would eventually damage the gearbox. Great looking kit for its era! I remember them well, back in the earlier 80’s. Anyway, keep up the great hints and tips, always a pleasure to watch your videos. Take care, keep well and all the best to you and the family 😉😊
Yes, I am sticking the sport tuned 380 back in it and leaving it kind of the way it was intended. It is more about the looks and remembering days gone by with this kit to me. Hope all is well with you and yours as also!
Huh?!🤔. A 540 motor will not ruin the gear box at all. I put a Tamiya GT tuned motor and the gear box holds up really well through out the years I drove it. In fact many RUclipsr that have this buggy uses a 540 instead and so far have not heard any issues. This buggy came with a 380 because it was intended to be a beginner buggy kit hence the 380 motor and the injected molded blue color of the body so there is no need to paint it. Anyway, it’s a great buggy all around. I do wish the a arms were a narrow so the buggy will have that same stance like the original 80’s HB. Thankfully, there is a RUclipsr by the name “Humble Vintage RC” that 3D printed arms and wheels to fit so it can have the narrow stance of the original HB, but retain the DT-02 chassis of which is a great chassis. The chassis reminds me so much is the 80’s race buggy RC-10 gold pan and Losi JRX2 chassis lay out and style.
Hi Addam, couldn't you just turn that pinion around? I mean set screw side out.
Love the videos, big fan.
If it was a very thin one like Tamiya makes yes, all I had was aftermarket and they tend to be a bit larger and the shaft on the stock motor, the Sport tuned and torque tuned motors are about 4-5mm shorter than the industry standard. There was not enough shaft to get the grub screw to grab one it was flipped over. I ended up putting a GT Tuned motor in it and those and the other rebuildable motors.have the longer shafts. It is an animal with oil shocks and the powerful motor. Far from the kids RC it started.out as!!
@@AddamsPlayground I see what you mean and I learned something.
Thanks for the reply, it's great to have some interaction after watching so many of your videos. 👍

Tamia holiday brushless build
Maybe for the speed run Peter is holding on his channel, CW-01 Creations! It is a whole different animal with the oil shocks and faster motor in it! Tons of fun to drive!
What about a 2435 brushless? They’re 380 sized. Hmm 🤔
I am sure it would work, just need the correct pinion for it. May be the best of both worlds actually. Brushless speed and power but 380 weight...
You could probably also get a 380 brushless for it from someone.
Love the new run footage!
Just finished my holiday buggy I put a 540 in it it runs a lot nicer I really like it thank you have fun
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun kit and a blast to drive. No speed demon here just a fun driver with its own personality!
@@garyhinger579 I liked the speed improvement but the bouncing was severely amplified with that extra weight. If I had a smoother area to run it on I'd probably leave the 540 in it but I am putting that 380 sport tuned in it. Kind of a compromise between the two. A little more power and no additional weight. Glad you got one too and thanks for watching!!!
Looks cool! Thanks for the review! Do you think the tires + wheels can fit the Grasshopper / Hornet? Might switch them up a bit for fun.
They may work, the Rising Fighter has similar wheels on it and it works well. You will need a set o 12mm hex hub adapters for the rears. I have never thought to try but it should work out, only thing I can thing of that might be an issue is the inset of the rear wheels may be a bit different so it may be a bit wider or narrower in the rear.
@@AddamsPlayground Thanks for the input! It's just that I've been looking for other wheel and tire combos for my Grasshopper aside from stock.
@@BoyzInTheHood-p1x the Grasshopper 2 wheels and tires will work well also.
@@AddamsPlayground Yeah, I've been eyeing that for a bit, will look into it! Thanks again for your time! Rarely do people reply after their videos have been on for more than year. Glad to have guys like you around on YT.
@@BoyzInTheHood-p1x I try to respond to all of them! I may miss one every now and then but I do try my best! Have a great rest of your week and a great weekend too!
Great detailed video mate, thanks so much for sharing your tricks and experience building the buggy, it's one of my favourite Tamiya's, I have built one not so long ago and really enjoyed it, typical tamiya with its own personality😁👌.
Good on you again RC Elf 👌🦘🇦🇺
Completely a one of a kind with this one, it certainly has its own charm and personality! It is like a time machine, much like many other classic Tamiya kits. Takes you right back to the 80s just with longer run times!!! And yes, the Elf is an amazing fella!!!
@@AddamsPlayground
Spot on! Yep I remember the 5 - 7 minute run times then 6 hours to charge it 😂
I'm probably going to try to put a 17 turn in the holiday buggy I want it faster than all my other two wheel drives.
That is going to be a handful
Let me ask you this what brand of 17 tooth opinion is it and it only takes a 17.540 in it what makes the tummy one any different because you can bring it down further cuz it doesn't log enough neck to it? Like I said does it say you can put a 540 motor on it?
Yeah it has it in the instructions showing 540 install and the 17 tooth pinon. I just had one from a set to them laying around and it is just too long overall. The Tamiya one in more compact in size to fit the shorter shaft of the motor.
You are aware that the rear suspension in the front suspension with different on the original which I wish they would bring back to total reissue of that particular model.
Yeah, not sure if it was a cost concern or a durability concern on why they completely changed the chassis. I assume probably a bit of both. Was probably cheaper and more durable on.the newer chassis. I agree the old platform would be more fun to have but it is still a fun easy build that is fun to drive about. Thanks for watching Brad!!!
I would keep the stock 380 motor until it wore out lol
The only one I have with the 380 motor in it is the Grasshopper. The one stock was amusing but with the oil dampers I installed and the more powerful 540 motor is a completely different car. It went from a classic VW bug to a Porsche with very little effort!
what the heck I thought i already subscribed well now I am
Thank Bryan! It is all good, I have heard of occasionally where RUclips just removes subscribers for some unknown reason so you may have been. Either way thank you and much more fun stuff to come!
Great vid addam would a 1/14 scale brushless system work instead of that 380 motor. Thanks for the vid 👍
That is a tough one. It really depends on if the mounting holes are the same. On the Tamiya kits the motors are not adjustable to fit various sizes pinions. They have set positions where the motor goes so it usually will only allow for one or two settings. If the mounting holes are the same as either the 540 can or the 380 can you should be able to. Otherwise it would not be a good idea as the amount of modification needed may end up ruining the gear box. You should be able to find the motor specs online with some googling and check it against what you have. Wish I had a better, yes/no answer for you but without knowing the mounting hole setup I can't say. Otherwise anything is possible with the right tools and enough epoxy!!!!
I have been tempted with a Holiday Buggy, I thought about making it look a bit like a Fast Attack Vehicle, or something George Miller would put in a movie 👍
Yeah, sadly I don't know what paint you could use on the body. It says in the instructions the body cannot be painted. I am sure there is something that would work but I'm not sure what would work. Other than that it would be a cool starting point for a custom build.
@@AddamsPlayground nothing is impossible, especially with sand paper and primer
@@RCsoandso the Krylon Fusion paint says it will stick to PET plastic. I am sure there are others as well.
Hi Adam, I love the dt02 chassis , I run a couple of highly modified ones. The original 80s holiday buggy had a plastic bathtub chassis as well just a different design. It did t have an frp chassis. Front shock towers on these a weak point , a lot of people brace the front towers at the top with a car I. Or frp piece . You can use a turnbuckle but it’s not a good as a solid brace. Cool video though ;) enjoy ut
Hey Andy, thanks for the correction! I think I misremembered things... Happens more and more as the hair goes gray!!! It is a fun buggy, just got some long awaited oil shocks for it to upgrade those to get rid of some of that bounce. I will look to brace up those towers as well. Appreciate the help!!
You need to heavy run it man. Lol
heh, you know damn good and well you never intended to keep that 380
You never know! My Grasshopper is still rocking the 380 in there but I like it with the lighter motor. But yeah, this one really does deserve a bigger motor in it! It was not my plan to run the GT tuned in there but that is what worked out at the time with the pinion I had to work with. With a good motor and some oil filled shocks on it this thing is a ripper and joy to drive! I am glad it worked out the way it did and I "accidentally" got a great buggy! LOL!
You know he gave me a holiday buggy too he just went to shen RC gave him four cars.
Yeah, I am glad you got one and I am glad Steve got some cool kits too! The Elf is awesome 😎😎
Oil-filled dampers.
This is not the Holiday Buggy we had at 1980 but it's ok 🤩
No, I am kinda surprised that didn't release it as it was but probably too expensive for parts and tooling so they went this you're. Thanks for stopping by and checking it out
@@AddamsPlayground HB was my first real R/C car Xmas 1980 and it was so cool. Runtime was short like 5mins with the 6V batt, later got the 7.2V with the "hump". I also got the fast charger with a manual timer, funny (no delta peak). The Hornet was my second car.
@@ninja1970fin we are spoiled nowadays with such long run times! I remember having 3 packs and hot lapping them. Run the first one and I'd stick it in between to metal bars to try and cool it off while tossing it on the quick charger hoping it didn't melt down while going through the other two and repeat... Still only got less than an hour of use from all that!!! But all good memories for sure
@@AddamsPlayground yes 👍😅😎

Currently doing a full dismantle and rebuild on a new chassis of my General Lee Fazer mk2..... a painfull procedure that has uncovered no end of issues, and lots of expense along the way!😮
Enjoyed listening to this one, especially as we built one recently.
It did make me chuckle when you were advising no more than a 540 silver can on the stock suspension......
Little did you know what crazy antics we would all be getting up to with one of these three years down the line!!
Watching this has inspired me to get the old hola buggy out for a spin this week..... If it ever stops raining!!! 😂
