I agree… a lot of us hate our hair! I am in the corporate world and when I went into the office with my microlocs. It was the black folks that had issues! All my other colleagues loved it. Everyday for that month I remember the white/asian folks gave me compliments! I love wearing my locs! I don’t care what people think…. In this day and age! We as black people are the ones policing our hair

Thank you for watching and commenting 💗, and honestly it is so sad. Thats why i had to share that it is our own community that does it as well. They usually are the ones to ask “what are you going to do with your hair?” when it is in it’s natural state. I really dislike that but about our community. However, it’s understandable because this European society has taught us to hate ourselves. Literally our skin, hair, noses, EVERYTHING😭!
So we all as a collective must keep having these convos and be able to be honest to undue all this programming that started back with our ancestors! Also, continue to shut down and not listen to the media that continues to tell us in subtle ways that we aren’t beautiful naturally how God made us! 👏🏽👏🏽

I said this to a friend and she almost unfriended me 😢. It's hard for some people to face the truth. I used to hate my hair, I knew I hated my hair, and I admitted I hated my hair. Now that I've learned to take care of my hair, I love it, and no one can ever make me feel insecure about my hair ever again.

All praises 🙏🏽💗 that is a blessing and yess it’s a tough pill to swallow honestly. That’s why it’s hard to even talk about it. But in order for all of us to begin the process of loving it, we must admit we may have a bit of dislike for it. And, honestly that’s normal because of all the programming that happened historically and still through the media today! But, when we are honest we can begin to embrace our hair and change that relationship we have with our hair! 💗

Free ppl of color typically referred to ppl who were of mixed race, not Blk. Many ppl use this term synonymously with a modern view of the ppl of color phrase to describe Blk ppl.. When reading historical literature have to check the context of how that term is used. But, tignon was for mixed race.

    Never hated my natural hair.
    Stopped perms at 14
Had my hair out most of the time.
Did braids very little because I hate the take down.
Got locs at 20, works as a data analyst making pretty decent money.
Sucks that some people don't like their hair

This. Many mixed women, like Mariah Carey and Rashida Jones, naturally could pass for white. Their hair is no different than many white women’s so a differentiation had to be made.

I was thinking about this the other day. When viola Davis took off her wig on htgawm I was in awe and shocked she did that. It changed my whole perspective and other the years I’ve slowly learned how to take care of my hair enough to have it out naturally. I am obsessed with my curls. I was not taught to take care of my hair. My mother did protective styles and nothing more. I was taught to hide my hair.

Thank you for your comment and adding to the conversation 🩷. I relate as well! I was not taught as well to take care of my hair either! It was simply a perm or relaxer and then added hair to make it appear thicker because how flat the “just for me” made my hair. It is truly something :(. However, I am happy we can have these convos today to not continue this behavior with our children in the future!! We can teach them to love their hair because we are finally knowing and understanding how to love ours. 🩷🌸🫶🏽 I bet your hair is beautiful

I truly enjoyed this conversation. I have definitely hated my hair at times usually when it's dry and feels brittle. When I first had my big chop I had bought a wig for the first time to hold me until I had my hair in another protective style "kinky twists". I felt liberated but also uncomfortable at the same time. Your features and everything is on display when you do the big chop. I felt more confident and accepted with a relaxer or more european styles than I did melanated styles. I love the editing and I enjoy these commentary videos.

That is true, but I feel like we could make it easier! The more we learn about our hair I feel, the easier it could get for us to do it! And it may not take a whole day. I understand and feel this comment but I do also feel like it still could be a hatred that some of us have for our hair. :( I am just sharing this because the need to always hide it and not wear it out.
