His love for flowers, especially poppies, once a simple joy he shared with the people, has now become an obsession. He wanders endlessly, searching for the perfect poppy, clinging to the fading hope that if he finds it, the villagers might return. I’m seeing everyone kind of interpret the dream sequence as a flashback of sorts, but I have a different take. Personally, I think the dream sequence is him imagining a symbolic kind of “what if” scenario. Like, if only he was stronger, if only he was bigger, maybe he could have saved them. He’s trapped in that maddening “if only” stage of grief.

    my read:
the golem is in an abandoned village, they failed their one job as a guardian of that place. Having nothing else to live for, they walk out to the farthest their ai will take them, stopping at a rose, laying down and staring at the sun. In a dream sequence, the golem is now giant, with a small villager on his right shoulder, provocative of the devil himself (though not literally obviously). The villager tells the golem… something before it picks up a tree and looks up once again, returning to reality. Another thing to note is the golem has a totem of undying on a place near where the heart would be in this sequence. I interpreted this as meaning not only did the village fall at their watch, but it was actually the golem’s doing. the golem appears to be following the villager’s orders when they pick the tree out of the ground, which to my eye symbolizes that the golem was told to or decided to cause destruction. the totem, now, could mean two plausible things. The first thing that came to mind was the fact that you can only find totems from woodland mansions as far as i’m aware, which could imply it had malicious intents or was being controlled by something(??). another possibility is that this totem is meant to represent pureheartedness, but the villager/devil figure could be manipulating it.
After the golem wakes up, it sits and stares at the flower before the camera zooms out quickly. you can hear the first milliseconds of a golem death sound right before the video cuts abruptly.

    • @anidiot4702
      @anidiot4702 3 месяца назад +16

additionally, I just wanted to point out that the golem raises both the tree and the flower in the air, in front of a circular and square sun. possibly an offering in return for its release from the world? the dream sequence could be interpreted as its life flashing before its eyes, or at the very least its final judgment before it can move on. just an extra thought

Very cool video, I like that it's pretty up to interpretation and vague with elements guiding the story without flat out saying it. I actually have my own interpretation, it's pretty long so ill give a tl;dr:
The golem was created by villagers for destruction, but always actually appreciated creation and nature. He made a choice to betray his destructive masters to escape their control. Either by directly killing them or watching them die, he escaped their rule. He deeply regrets his actions and is disgusted with his choice to cause destruction under his own control and free will. However, he imagines what his future would be had he not destroyed the villagers. This future is a vast desert wasteland where every last tree has been destroyed by him under the command of the villagers. He realizes it was rigged from the start, for him to be destructive. But he made the choice to destroy his creators rather than being complicit in their destruction of natural beauty.
Now here comes the yapper -
The golem sits in the ruins of the village he was once tasked to protect. The villagers that once lived there created him for the destruction of their enemies. He lets out a sigh while standing up, understanding that his next choice is in conflict with all that he has been created for. He walks to the end of town and stares into the plains, wanting something new. He glances back at the ruined village, but knows there is nothing left there for him. He has failed at what the villagers tasked him to do, and is ready to move on from his failure. He steps out into the plains and notices a poppy, picking it up to inspect it closely. He always had a great appreciation for the beauty and creation of nature (this is evident in the game as well, picking and offering flowers), but the goals of his creators were in direct opposition to appreciation of life, beauty, and creativity. They designed him for destruction and controlled him to destroy, despite his calm and peaceful disposition. This theme is also strengthened by the origins of the iron golem's design, looking into it the golem is based on the robots from "Castle in the Sky." Both pick and offer flowers to children which shows their true peaceful nature, but both are also designed to serve humans for the purposes of destruction and war.
The golem then dreams/imagines/reflects/etc. a different time. This is pretty up to interpretation; it could be a "past life," indicated by the unused totem. However, I actually like to imagine it as a daydream of the future, or as the golem reflecting on how his past choices would have changed his future. Had he succeeded in protecting the villagers, he would still be under their control and command. It's clear that his destruction has spread far and wide, with the entire horizon being barren desert. He has also clearly been evolved and developed further by his creators, towering much higher than before and using technology (totems) stolen from the enemies he destroyed. The "devil on his shoulder" villager barks commands into his ear, and he sullenly complies. What was the command he was just given? To destroy the last standing tree, the last relic of natural beauty that is yet to be wiped out by the villagers. Clearly the golem still appreciates nature, even while following commands he takes time to appreciate the beauty of what he has been forced to destroy. But in this future, he would have failed. He would never have lost his appreciation, but he failed by never acting to disobey his destructive masters. He was always capable of escaping - whether by overpowering them, leaving, or simply watching them fall to their enemies. But in this imagined future, he never did. In this future, his walk into the plains would have been for the purpose of destroying the nature below his feet (the last tree) rather than to cherish and appreciate it (the poppy).
Now bear with me, but I think this daydream interpretation paints the introduction in a whole new light. He didn't simply fail the villagers and feel bad for them; he wanted to fail them. You'll notice he actually has no cracks or damage on him as you'd expect after a hard fought loss. He may have hid or stood idly by as the weak villagers were overtaken. Or maybe he destroyed them himself. He was always capable of extreme destruction, he could easily raze the entire village with the power he had been given. Maybe his sullen mood isn't a mourning of the villagers, but a reflection of his self-loathing for becoming what he hated. This is emphasized through the music - on the surface its very calming and peaceful. But there's an off-putting distortion to the sound, a strange undertone that changes the peace to discomfort. These musical elements are parallel to the peace the golem has achieved by becoming free, but the undertones of guilt and self-hatred that prevent him from finding true comfort in what should be peaceful. In order to become a peaceful being and break free of his chains, he had to actively choose to be as destructive as the villagers. He caused destruction and death based on his own choice, not what his masters commanded. Once he comes to terms with his disgust for his actions (which clearly took a long time, as the village has been deteriorating for a long time), he then sits in the field and reflects on what other choices he could have made. During this daydream, he realizes that the other option was even more destructive. The game was rigged from the start, from creation. He was destined to destroy, and he chose to destroy on his own terms rather than on the terms of his creators. He sits in the field, now more at peace with his decision to prevent the destruction of the world at the cost of the village.

This feels almost like Minecraft meets Studio Ghibli's Castle in the Sky: the music, the pacing, the giant metal protector that's tried his best to do his job. Stunning.

What a beautiful art and animation style! You're really making me think about the lives I've destroyed by slaying those golems for that early game iron. This animation humanizes them in a way I never thought of, and I love it!

It is a devastated village, the golem feels nostalgic for that which he no longer remembers but knows that he once had. (I don't know, the animation is just nice)

I like the atmosphere of the video. The feeling of guilt for not succeeding in protecting the people around the golem. The only thing he can do is cope. From my point of view, the way he raises the poppy to the sun can be him trying to find forgiveness from the villagers that died.
It reminds me of Gopo's little man :)
They both have quite surreal vibes. Both associate flowers as a way of expressing their feelings.

just noticed the village is abandoned. Usually it’s the golem who goes down first long before the villagers
