Youre getting a reputation in the neighborhood 😊

We have a sign on our garden gate, "Chien Lunatique." Ten years, no problem.

Hi Mark. Your temporary number will pay the 75 percent. It is a shame you didn't get the mutuelle for the rest then you would not have had to pay anything. On a low income through Amelie I think it is about 49 euros a month. Otherwise about 89 through April which I use.
As a resident you are entitled to grants (subventions) eg for heating, windows, doors, insulation etc for about half paid by govt. That is why your neighbour is doing it

Cheapest option for double glazing is to take your windows out and get them double glazed. I’ve just built a house and we’ve used all UPVC joinery and man what a difference living in a house with really good joinery than our old house. We barely need to heat. So long answer short windows first. Good luck with your toof

Hi Marc - thanks for the video. I would have the windows replaced - something that is achievable in a shorter period of time. A dog would be a good deterrent but then windows are more important as I recall a rescue dog is expensive.

Why not ask the neighbour if you can have the old windows and use them to divide the kitchen up as you wanted. It will create double glazing of sorts. And you get light through.

I put new dbl paned windows in my old wood house, it’s still cold but I do like them, when it’s storming out, I see the storm but can’t hear it- kinda surreal. I’d go for the wood burner for warmth, it’s what I need need next. The heat pump runs up my electric bill but I do like the heat pump for it’s ability to switch to an air con for those really uncomfortable hot days

We used to get the odd nosy villager, who would leave our gate and barn doors open [ I think they do this to make a point about being nosy],, apparently if you install a sign that states 'private property', means you are protected more by the law if you catch an intruder on your land without permission to be there, without the sign you have little recourse for someone just entering onto your land and walking around. Like you we installed locks on gates, CCTV.

Hi Marc if I had a choice of what to spend I would buy the windows , because windows will be double glazed so hence it will prevent any draughts escaping and losing the heat you are trying to keep in .Also you have a fire at the moment so you will not be short of any heating,..... then when and if you had money I would do the fire. Yep lots of red tape with French Forms thats for sure. I think you need to have some sort of security light so you can see if anybody is trying to nick anything.

  • @SweetOne.

I would do the windows and get a portable oil filled radiator. Someone else in France has been waiting almost a year for their number - they are still using the temporary number - the office in their area said they are behind with requests they are still working on 2022. Keep an eye on the expiry date of your temporary number and inquire again 3 months in advance of expiration. they got another temporary that allows them to travel then return to France but it is only good for 3 months. Seems to me it is very confusing there to get Landed or immigration papers.

Hi Mark, I put clear plastic over drafty old windows every autumn and stick it to the wall with double sided tape. The best quality is made by 3M company. Do this project before the walls get cold, it really helps the tape to stick until you remove it. I've used cheaper brands and the tape comes loose quickly. Any plastic will work, it's the tape that comes in different qualities.
It will make a big difference by covering the windows.
That will give you time to save$ and possibly get the government to help pay for new windows. Also check for cracks around window frames and caulk.
I li❤ve in a condo that was built for rental 50 years ago so they didn't use very good windows. I bought 25 years ago and have been self sealing the drafts out annually. ❤

Good morning Marc and Dave.Your pasture looks good as an animal sanctuary. They sense kindness and will track you down don't you worry about that.😅 An hour in the dentist's chair. All will be well.😊 Get fire sorted for this winter and aim for double glazing when the budget allows.

Marc, intruders are everywhere. A camera and light may deter.
Good luck with your woodstove. I hope that all works out for you.
Dave is looking good. Maybe that cat wants to move in and hunt mice?
I hope all goes well for you at the dentist. I had root canals done before. No fun, but I had worse.
I see Pauline had a great comment. Maybe you can apply for grants.
The economy is tough everywhere now. Get all the help you can before they make more cutbacks.
    Best wishes. 😊

Invest in the Stove, definitely. Get a tube of silicone and draught liner and seal around the windows. You're already doing great work on the insulation (though there's no insulation on that external wall by the loft stairs !!!).

I think it depends on your area here just like anywhere, I had a shop in a town out here and their were lots of 'dodgy' goings on, somebody even stole plastic dog bowls from outside my shop, in my village I often go out and leave my door unlocked and windows open with no issues.

Someone's out to steal Dave !
anyways if you're planning on staying in France more than 3 months (?, or you can get it after 3 months i guess) you should apply for your carte vitale asap.
healthcare (through Amelie / carte vitale) is most definitely the only administration that actually works in France.
Your social security number is in fact extremely important, it is the one number every french citizen gets when he's born here, and needs afterwards to be acknowledged by any of the administrative bodies, it should come with your carte vitale registration.
Most health practitioners will be quite sorry that you don't have a carte vitale and have to make you pay full price, or upfront. Although dental is really not the service that has the best coverage and so dentists will not care that much.
then urssaf is not the administration you want to mess with, they are ruthless and will chase you to the end of the world if they believe you owe them anything, not that you knew that you did in the first place, but yeah, take care of your urssaf papers or get in trouble. You won't like them, nobody does.
    Good luck.
