      The bridge had a reversed guitar at the end, as the chorus was about to come in, which was part of the build back....and that probably helped give away what was coming...

      Not just that, but the band he is in - Red Hot Chilli Peppers - are well known for jamming all the time, they will improvise their way through large sections of their concerts. So Chad is an expert at listening keenly and quickly understanding what is needed on the drums.

    • @erikrandan7294

      I believe him when he says he never heard the song before. When he first joined the Chili Peppers, he didn't know their songs (the ones they had when he first joined). He just jumped in and locked into what they were doing with no rehearsal. Nobody one that he didn't know the songs. He is incredible at "sensing" the vibe and going for it.
      As for what he's playing here, there are little moments where (if you freaky watch his expressions and reactions), you can see him adapting on the fly. He's just so good at it, it's nearly seemless.

    I'd imagine he was able to change the feel with such ease because he realised the songs structure followed a pop formula verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus and was genuinely just jamming. Chads had a significant amount of jam sessions being a drummer who has been involved in songwriting prior to the digital era so i'd say at this point it just comes natural to know when it comes to the bridge to change up cymbals but keep the same kind of groove.

    He actually did drums for Dua Lipa “Break My Heart” as a favor to his friend who was producing her album. He did a video on Drumeo playing the song and it’s hilariously fantastic in every way.

    I love Drumeo and I’m a guitar player. It definitely helps with my vocabulary. 4:32 he didn’t change the time, he changed the feel. He understands that in the Verse you play this, and in the chorus you play this and in the breakdown you play like this. Notice he switched to the toms in the breakdown because that’s that’s what you do

  • @madmanau8730
    @madmanau8730 Год назад +9

    Any experienced drummer can make up their own drum part. There's a reason why this is so amazing though. Not only did Chad pick up the slightly trickier timing instantly (most songs written are in 4/4, Chad figured out quickly it was in 3 and slapped a nice beat over it), but he also read the cadence of the song in terms of the chorus', the verses, the bridge etc and just rolled with what felt right.
    I've been drumming a while and I jam with a bunch of guys once a month who play all kinds of music I don't know, and I just ask the time signature and tempo and I just make it up as I go.
    The difference between a regular drummer and the insane ability of Chad Smith is that Chad seemlessly, without requiring any runup, jumped straight into the song without fiddling with it. Then, he just read the entire song perfectly, moved with the song and adjusted as he needed to and made it sound sick.
    He made some obvious slipups in terms of the fact that, for example, you can see he adjusts his sound mid section etc but if he re-played it as he did the first time around but with a pre-decided sound for each section, it'd have been better than the original.
    He's polished and practiced and has all his theory so bedded down. Amazing drummer.

  • @tommygunn704
    @tommygunn704 Год назад +4

    He’s basically taking his cues from the vocals at certain points, and at others he’s following the guitar. The biggest part is that he’s been drumming for over 40 years and can tell where the song is going based on common song structures.
    You can tell when he realizes the shifts in the song and makes adjustments,though he fits it in seamlessly.

  • @prote3253
    @prote3253 2 месяца назад +1

    He identified the song tempo as going in three. This isn't just about the type of beat; it also deals with the manner in which the vocals are conducted for highs and lows. He's also able to understand the build ups, the pensive atmosphere being built through the guitar and vocals which is mostly just an experience aspect.

  • @thetalantonx
    @thetalantonx Месяц назад +1

    4:57 - Flow states are the products of directed practice and focus to lay down the ingrams and then in the moment the quieting of the inhibitory centers of the brain so that crosstalk between regions is accentuated and allowed. The default mode network is suppressed and you get out of your own way. There are excitatory centers and inhibitory centers (over activity of excitatory centers is epilepsy, over activity of the inhibitory centers is depression). It's why psilocybin is successful for treating depression, shuts down the inhibitory centers, increases crosstalk.
    Flow state has a lot of the same overall effects... and this dude has been drumming for 56 years! He started when he was 7!

They don't really get along, but have been working together for years, and sound great together. I do hope you do more drumeo or just drum focused reactions in the future. Chad was a beast on this one, and is one of the few drummers on drumeo to not listen all the way through the track w/no drums. Many drummers listen multiple times and take notes. He just rocked right into it. Loved the Danny Carey one you did right after this in the live as well, and I hope people take a look at that one as well.

    When you study music theory and you learn how songs are structured, it becomes easier for you to do what Chad Smith can do. I've played music since 82 and play many different instruments. I can sit and play with different bands and make that shit my own in a matter of minutes. It's what's afforded me to live in paradise on this beach surrounded by jungles and beautiful women. I only have love for one woman but I love all music. Here in the Philippines, I hear so many amazing singers here. Imagine walking around and you hear what sounds like Celine Dion singing on the radio, then when you find this radio, it's a 4'7 little Filipina woman killing it and sounding just like Celine. That's what I love about music. It brings us all together

    Chad and Flea would sit around for hours and just jam, finding rhythms to groove to off each other. I think this is where he gets his random ‘pick up anything, anywhere” greatness. He just feels what fits with what hes hearing at the time. If it’s not right, he just changes it up on the fly. Basically, jamming to whatever he hears is natural for him

    Songs have a certain structure. You figure out the time signatures (how many beats per measure) and then get a feel for how many lines there are in the verses, and how often the chorus is played. It’s not easy but when you listen for those things you get a feel for what the percussion part will be. Of course you also have to be a great drummer with a lot of experience.

      That's not condescending at all. It's a nice thing to say. Would you agree with here that this song, as far as arrangement goes, is pretty easy to figure out? Hell, I've watched it like 6 or 7 times. This is not a beat for beat perfect cover the amazing thing is how freakin close he's coming to the original. Building off your comment:
      This isn’t 100% perfect because this is pure improv. Smith catches the time signature in seconds and has enough music knowledge to match the tone of the song. The mind-blowing thing is hearing how little lag there is between hearing the shifts in the song and Chad catching up with something that’s tonally appropriate. As much as I would have loved to hear Chad dial-in a beat by beat perfect performance, this first pass is kinda mind-blowing.

    It's ass backwards, which is what Chad zeroed in on. Since the drummer part isn't leading, Chad has to take direction from the lead guitar/lead singer. His depth of 33 yrs pro drumming is what gave him the toolset to keep up so quickly. What he lacked in youth, his experience, made up any deficit, and this is the perfection set before us. A true Giga Chad.

    Regarding your question, how he knows when to switch:
    As nedrick2263 said, he's a professional with years of experience. I also hate to hear that this is fake or that he knows the song, because how should it be possible to guess when to switch the style and the build ups etc...
    I'm not a pro, just a little music enthusiasm. But here is what I want to share: if you have some knowledge of how songs are built (Verse, refrain, bridge, etc) and have a feeling for listening to the guitar, singer and these kind of things, you are able to guess in which kind of direction it could go or what kind of section of the song comes/could come next.
    Chad has years of experience as I already said and has 'some' knowledge. This is not the only thing that is needed, but he has more than that -> passion and he is more than just a drummer and musician. To play that song as he could be the guy that wrote the drum line of the whole song is just outstanding and shows what an unbelievable drummer he is.. to do it like he did isn't normal and also not possible with only these things I mentioned. I just wanted to try to describe how you can guess what kind of changes in songs are coming/could be possible and also when.

      9ne more thing.. every drummer has its own style. He played the drum in Rockbands for years, what matches with this song. That helped, but however, even with this background, it's still amazing that he played like this and I can not watch that enough times

    how the fuck do you jump in live to play a song you've never heard before, and mind you he couldn't hear the original drum part obviously as the video stated, and outplay the original drummer like that? only the best in the world in Chad Smith can pull that off. insane.

    If anyone doesn't believe that Chad could do that without hearing it.. go to drumeo and watch the clip where they give a drummer the job of learning Dragonforce asap. He learns it in 1 hr 19 min. You.. would never learn it. Never. If you can't gage these peoples abilities by they're experience and ability then whatever.. it's fake.. but the reality is that wasn't even that difficult for Chad.

    For the record, Jared Leto was fsr better as a vocalist than he is at the joker. Also noteworthy isbthan 90+% of these drummers on Drumeo do at minimum 1 full listen before even taking a shot l, let alone just start playing on the first listen and make most of the time and pace changes.
