    The American food system doesn't make it easy for small farmers to get their healthy food to your home, but meet two farmers who are trying: Ricky Horton and Sherilyn Shepard. They're siblings who grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables in southwestern Virginia. Their livelihood is filled with uncertainties ranging from unpredictable weather to changing immigration laws. Here's their story.

    Bravo, great film. What it left out was information about the US Farm Bill. If you are interested in helping to support small farmers who grow the fruits and vegetables we need, please look into the Farm Bill. Also, every dollar we spend either supports the big farmers or the farmers who really needs our support - people buy from farmers markets as much as possible - buy local, buy organic. Stop buying processed foods that are made with corn, soy, wheat

    18 acres,43 chickens, one pig, 2 freezers, 5 beehives, and 2 huge hearts that understand those tears from the gentleman at the end. At the end of our first year, we are already being forced out by big ag.

    I choked up when the gentleman being interviewed around 11 minutes in choked up...bless his heart...I feel the same though. It's heartbreaking to see what our nation is doing to itself. We're on a steadily accelerating downhill slide and the projections for our children do not look good...

    If it's difficult to make a living on a small farm in the US, can you imagine how hard it is for us in Central America? The treaties we have with developed countries do not have benefits for us. Cattle and pig raising here, for example, cannot compete with the meat imported from you. People are selling their land because farming is not profitable anymore. That's why we understand these farmers in the video.

    One farm I tried to get a job on wanted me to move into their property so they could charge me room and board and then pay a little over that. No OT, no days off during the non-winter period.

    I just came across this video on RUclips, it's amazing, you could be talking about England here. I'm a small vegetable grower in NW England and we have exactly the same problems here. The UK relies too much on imported vegetables because our supermarkets dominate and won't give small growers who are producing healthy, locally home grown quality produce, a chance.

      Not to mention the lack of Labour to pick the vegetables since the new restrictions.

    I feel like this should be called. "Small Farms. It's Depressing!" I run a small farm on 20 acres and I've lost weight working hard and my health has increased eating my own produce. I have the community behind me and my income has shot up. I know I'm not in the minority either! There are two sides to every coin.

    No need to generalize with migrant labor. My area has Hmong crews of 15 or so that go from farm to farm. When they're with us they are right in the dirt with the 15 local laborers. This past summer we had one day when they refused to work because of the heat. Shortly after they left our boss told us to call it a day as well. The ability to put in hard work is an individual issue. One lazy person can bring down everyone's motivation.

    Too many politicians getting contributions from wealthy commodity farmer groups. Need to cut corporate welfare to the large commodity farms and give it to the family farmers growing real food.
    Yes, I have large commodity farmers in my family. Very well off but always complaining about crop prices while they spend 2 weeks in Mexico on vacation every year.

  • @bobmoe5934

    I understand they’re problems with finding labor. The US govt pays too much in welfare benefits so why would they want to work. Cut off welfare.

    Great film the problem is it’s a broken government, the US government they care more about foreign farmers in foreign countries then they own.if this continues we will become a Third World country depending on other nations to give us food so now they have the upper hand,if they don’t like us they don’t have to give us food so ask yourself what are we doing to ourselves

  • @jamesharmon2207
    @jamesharmon2207 Год назад

    Please I donot meen to be offended but I what to let anyone know, but this has to do with all types of employment around the country and that is in today would that we live in there is no one in the labor employment work force anymore that want,s to work to make ends meet but would like to have some money left over to enjoy them selfs and to buy the items that we that we all need to live that so,so many of us can't afford any more in our way of living $12.00 or even $14.50 in not even enough of money to live off of to make ends meet anymore ..😢😮

      We will need to do things differently to make t work. Vertical growing, greenhouse/hoophouse and perhaps direct marketing from grower to consumer. Perhaps a collective Website based on local community growers. Cut out the middle man. We are looking to keep jobs here in the US. There should be some Gov. support and incentive. We need to stop importing fake eggs and saw dust parmesan cheese and take care of ourselves.

    you know there is a market a pretty decent one for organic tobacco ... question is local labor not willing to do that job because your not willing to pay them enough to feed there families to do it as well... just saying.. i dont like hikes in the cost in fruit and veggie but id pay an extra bit if it said fairly paid labor
