How Soil is Created: The Succession of Life in the Evolution of soil

  • A short film looking at how the succession and colonisation of bare substrate by organisms such as lichens and mosses leads to the formation of soil. The evolution of soil took millions of years and was a process that involved, not only the physical weathering of bedrock, but also the addition of organic matter from the death and decomposition of plant matter. Presenting the film is environmental scientist, Octavia Hopwood.

    Industrial agriculture seems the only solution to feed 7.6 billion people. Yet many soil experts say that industrial agriculture destroys the soil. There are of course many projects that try to find an alternative to industrial agriculture. But so far this does not feed all people. One U.S. farm feeds 166 people annually. There are more than 570 million farms in the world. More than 90% of farms are run by an individual or a family and rely primarily on family labor. Family farms occupy a large share of the world's agricultural land and produce about 80% of the world's food. So actually, there have to be more farmers and fewer industries. And these farmers have to perform agriculture without destroying the soi and nature.

    • @59degrees98
      @59degrees98  3 года назад +2

      This is such a great comment! Thank you for your thoughts. Yes indeed, we have a huge amount of people to feed in the world, and the answer on how to feed our growing population is not clear. What we do know is that a lot of current methods result in the degradation and removal of much topsoil, which is vital for growing in. Although 'industrial' type agriculture (as you say) may help us feed the population for now, eventually we won't produce the quantities that we need due to a severe decrease in functional soil. We just need to figure out how to farm for the millions, whilst also enhancing the soil, rather than destroying it. Easier said than done, but we're trying! Thanks again, always good to hear such though provoking comments.
