You just now realized there are gigs to sharpen saw chains? Come on Mr Wranglerstar you've got to be joking?? The 12v granberg looks like a GREAT improvement over the 20 dollar model but no wonder the milling projects have been on the back burner. Now with sharp chains all the time we expect one this month... A nice video of how to use it and very close up which helped alot.

Love to see how to make my own chains. Up here I am spending almost $40 for a 20" chain. Sharpening chains costs about $25 - $30 for the same chain and takes several weeks.
Any way to save some money and be able to get my saws back up in much less time is a plus for sure.

I have used the file type Granburg and also the Oregon copy-cat in the past.. In the field, I use a file with wood handle to touch-up every other tank of fuel or so. Then the jig to make sure all angles and lengths are same, probably after many such touch ups. I find I do pretty well with the file and eyeballing as there is very little correction applied by the jig and I do not cut rainbows. BUT, either I have been mounting the jigs on the blade bassawkward or you are.I think you have it backward as my old instruction sheets show the jig mounted with the stop plate behind the cutter tooth, NOT in front of the depth gauge. But, your way seems to work for you, although it seems awkward to see you push the stone through the nose of the upper corner of the cutters.Very good video and narration!

    • @superdog6838
      @superdog6838 8 лет назад

i lot of seasoned cutters will intentionally use the files backwards.
they are less aggressive this way and give a finer edge.

The saw shop I used to work for charged $7 for any chain on a 20 inch bar and below, $10 for up to 32 inch and $15 for larger. I would like to see the chain video. We didn't cut chains for people because no one ever asked for them, but I have an old homelite XL12 with a bow bar that needs a chain. No one will sell me the chain for it because they say they are too dangerous to run.

Mr Cody I have been hand sharpening my saws for 20 years and would never ever let a grinding wheel touch my saws I run stihl 460 and 660 and 020t and my large saws run 28 32 and 36 in bars all skip tooth that video is great but truly for the home owner don't get me wrong they have there place but not for me.

Well I personal think I can get a better sharpening with my hand file than any grinder but that's just my opinion don't get me wrong Mr Cody you inspire me I have a lot of respect for you you home stead you a fire fighter in truly have a lot of respect I just personally think I can get a better edge on a chain that is hand filed than a grinder it just like your awesome sharping stone you only break them out on the important stuff well I only use stihl files because I believe there the best perferd file and huskvarna flies are crap

i cut as a hobbyist not a pro. but i have tools for my tools. ie tool nut.
i also used only hand sharpen my chain saw chains b/c grinders take off too much material and "most" have too much power and heat can ruin the steel temper.
this 12 volt grinder is different you can control the amt. of material removed and by minimizing the material removed you drastically lower the heat and dont weaken the chain tooth.
i took this a step further and use a dremmel with speed control with a 600 grit diamond bit.
use low speed. once you use a 600 grit diamond bit you wil never use a file again.
the diamond bit gets the tooth far sharper than new. in fact i had to reduce the amt i take off the "rakers" b/c the saw bites too hard.
i am in florida and found that on really hot days when you are cutting non-stop the saw and chain would get hot and need a rest. now with the chain 98% perfect i can run indefinitely and chain and bar are noticeably cooler. and yes my fuel and oil etc. are adjusted etc.
the way i found this out was my friends all had dull tortured chains and i offered to sharpen. well they were so bad i said hell with file ill use a dremmel they dont care and they abuse tools etc. at least they will have a usable saw.
i used a 200 grit diamond all around then 600 grit diamond. can sharpen chain in 5-10 min this way but i considered it BS. only did it on their saws. well son of a gun their saw was cutting better than my saw, lol
mine was already sharp so used the 600 grit diamond in a guide and just touched it up. dam my saw was throwing chips 8-10 feet. it was cutting so fast and kicking so hard it concerned me.
i then switched chains with one that was newer and had untouched raker used the 600 grit diamond and got supper cut without the bite and kick!
go ahead take two identical chains use a file on one
600 grit diamond on the second.
then use on a 3-4 foot log.
use a stop watch and measure the chip distance
i guarantee chips will be 1-2 foot further.
and you will knock 5-8 seconds off the cut.
multiple this by 8 hours of cutting and you will get more done with less fatigue.
you guys are pros. so you know how much physical punishment a larger saw dishes out over 10-12 hours.
i can always tell a pro cutter. he is the guy that sharpens his saw 3+ times a day.

thank you and many other posters.
i always learn alot on different boards and youtube etc.
example i was unaware that sthil was using those "plastic" main bearings
so after reading i took the exhaust off my saws and looked in the cylinder. dam it the one saw had what looked like a gray graphite on the piston wall.
disassembled saw and the main bearing was just starting to go bad. without that info i would have run the saw until ruined.
$20 and 5 hours back in action.

Alright I got mine on Saturday, by Saturday night my chainsaw is all sharp and happy. Man that does work great. One slight problem with mine.
The quality of the guide piece is not as high as it should be. Its rough and wasn't sliding back and forth like yours in the video. It would bind. I took some polishing compound and dremel to it and polished it up. After that it was ok.

When I get a new chain it usually sends long ribbons of sawdust flying.Does the angle of the grind have something to do with difference in saw dust and the way the chain cuts?

    • @superdog6838
      @superdog6838 8 лет назад

it has everything to do with the cut. so does the style of chain. depth, size of teeth spacing etc. etc.
i only use 3 angles and i dont do any ripping. ripping, using the chainsaw mill is completely different from cutting logs and i know nothing about ripping will deffer to pros that do alot of that.
but some of the OCD pros have a dozen different chains. and 3 to 5 different saws. usually 2 small and 3 large.
and they may have several different bars.
pros will use different saws and chains for different trees. every minute detail matters when you cut 60 hours a week for a living.
this said my best example of a clear cut difference is live healthy tree
      and a old dead tree.
if cutting large soft wood tree i might use a 45 degree.
but old dead oak 45 degree would be insane. i would use small 30 degrees for dead oak.
all this said 30 degrees is a common default.
if you have a larger more powerful saw and are impatient you can incr. angle more 35-40 degrees (note more angle =more kick=exponential incr. safety wise.
smaller saw less power 30-25 degrees.
another note if want clean precise cuts like when making fences or using landscape ties use small chain, small teeth small angle like 20 degrees.

Mechanized chain sharpeners have their place, but I think any good logger/woodsman will also learn how to sharpen with hand files. Anything mechanical can and WILL fail. I have had files break while out in the forest, and I have been able to sharpen my chain with the broken in half file.

So true, I might add always keep an old worn out chain in your truck just in case you need an emergency chain to cut the last few logs. I will often drive 100 miles to get into some good birch and don't like to leave until I am very full.

never know when you might get your bar & chain stuck in a log, when that happens it's good to have a spare to cut yourself back out with.

How can you get 12 chains on a 25 inch bar with a 25 foot roll? More like 6 chains.

Files cut in one direction only. Dragging it back like that is lazy and wears the file out prematurely. Cody must have too much money to throw away.

I'd like to see a video discussing/explaining the merits of different pitches and chain gauges. I can't remember you doing a video specifically on this. I know it's been discussed some, but I find it confusing.

Integrity. What a word. What a concept. It built America. As integrity dwindled so did America. Thank you Sir for helping pull us up from this slough of despond. God bless you and yours.

Hey Cody I've had the Alaska Chainsaw Mill for 20 years, I love it. I've always made my own motorcycle chains, I'd love to see how to make chainsaw chains, thanks for sharing.

Perfect timing, I'm building my kit list for my first chainsaw purchase (a Stihl 261 as per your other recommendations). Definitely would love to see the use of the breaker tool for building your own chains. Also if you could share some wisdom about the differences in chains and what you use where and why I would be even more in your debt! Thanks again Cody

anyone can hand file a chain just watch a couple youtube videos . its not as hard as Cody makes it out to be.

another thing . a chainsaw doesnt have a blade, its uses a bar and chain. Hence the name CHAIN-saw.

Bandsaw blades can most definitely be done by yourself. They also make grinding jigs. Cody do some research before you make statements like that. I have a friend with a Wood Mizer and he grinds all his blades. And if you know what you are doing, you can sliver solder broken bands.

Good video. I see the 30° angle but is there an adjustment for the pitch? The chains I use have a 10° pitch and a 30° and 35° angle.

Same question--there is a pitch angle isn't there?

Yes you can adjust for pitch,
