  • Which home coffee brewer is the best for you? Today we put two of our favourite coffee products to the test: the ‪@harionjp‬ vs the Clever Coffee Dripper. Both brew really nice cups of coffee at home. Both look very similar. But these are two totally different products. So, which one is best for you?

    I'm a huge fan of the Clever Coffee Dripper. I have been drinking coffee for nearly 60 years, I've used every imaginable way to make coffee. This simple, logical device creates the best coffee I have ever tasted. And yes, it can be compared with the French Press until it comes to the cleanup!

    I make coffee at work most often, so my v60 and my hand grinder live there. I keep the Clever at home for the weekends when I actually make coffee (not as often because I usually get something when I get donuts for my kids), but especially I use it on trips, because it's indestructible and easy to throw in a bag and it doesn't care what kind of kettle I have at my destination. Randomly, my friends' wives seem to like the coffee from the Clever more than the drip coffee or French presses our vacation places invariably make available.
    And as a random aside, my daughter liked that you wanted a coffee hug. 🤗

    I brew with the V60, the Cleverdripper, and the Aeropress, and I find they all have their strengths and weaknesses. My V60 method is nearly identical to yours, same ratio as well. However I often prefer to get the full coffee experience, oils and all, without filters, so I use my Aeropress with one of those stainless steel screens rather then the round filters. This is also preferable to my French Press which, I agree with others, is a pain to clean. Nice review!

    We travel a lot and love finding new coffee shops but when we can we like to brew coffee ourselves in our campervan. We have both the clever dripper and a v60 (yes it's overkill, but worth it 😂) and sometimes we just need the coffee to be made nice and easily so we would tend to lean a bit towards the clever dripper a bit more. It's just so much simpler. Don't get us wrong though, we LOVE our v60!!!

      Here's a real minimalist tip for travellers: Get a cloth filter, or "coffee sock". That's all you need! You can either: 1) put the filter directly in a cup, throw in the grounds, and pour over for a single cup. Or 2) if you're making more than 1 cup, mix the grounds in hot water in a separate vessel, and then pour the mix through the filter. Super simple, minimal, and absolutely delicious!

    You can use clever dripper as perciuation one...Just treat it as if v60, just put clever on kraf all time. Advantaga is that you interrupt flow of water down to kraf any time you wanted, you do real v60 blooming for example and continue like normal clever etc. Lots of lots possibilities. 2 minites is too short for immersion for me. I do 4-5 min.

    Thanks for a really nice video. Ideas for tests. I think there is an add on making v60 become an immersion like Clever. I like Clever but often take out the first lighter water after 1 minute and then pour it back into the clever.
    I would be interested if either of these Clever techniques would be better or worse than Hario V60 with the add on (named Switch??) That little plug? costs more than 2 entire Clever I believe so quite overpriced, but is it better than my clever technique avoiding the side water? some other interesting techniques is to use espresso machine in a blooming process, and for lazy clean taste, espresso through paper filter with added 80 C water, clean cup.

    For those who like a little stronger coffee when using the clever grind your coffee just like you would for the pour over, yet use 25g of coffee to 300ml of water, I also add half my water first and then the coffee to steap, then at the 45 second mark add the rest of the water, give a stir and let set for 1 minute 20 seconds then break the crust and put it on my cup to fall, makes it more clean and crisp since you release the gas more that way.

    Very interesting comparison. I just wonder if you could dual use the Clever Dripper as a V60 when you set it on a cup right at the start so the drip gate is always open like a V60 WHILE you are brewing. Would it even work or is the gate drip hole to big and would drip to fast in comparison to a V60? Could you compensate with a finer grind or would it taste way to bitter? In short, is using the Clever Dripper as a v60 a sensible idea?

    • @thestudio.coffee
      @thestudio.coffee  Год назад +3

      It's something i thought about too. I'm going to test it, but the combination of the larger hole on the base of the clever, plus the ridges on the side might make the water pass too quick.

    "I like a slightly stronger coffee, I think standard is about 15g, I tend to do about 20g in my coffee".
    Where is the standard for a 300ml pour 15g of coffee? That seems very weak at 1:20 where the usual standard is 1:15, which is what you end up using anyway (20g to 300ml), just curious

    I don't have a v60 but I prefer the coffee I get from the chemex to the clever. I thought the clever would give me a more French press like cup, but it is not as bold. I don't know how to explain it. It lacks the body of a FP but doesn't have the crispness of a pour over. It gives an advantage over neither, imo. Not to say that it makes bad coffee. It just doesn't make better coffee, for me. Plus, I kind of like the pour over thing, lol.

    How is a French Press difficult to clean? You remove the screen, rinse it under water. Done. You then add a little water to the pitcher and swirl the grinds on the bottom. You dump the coffee sludge into a small plastic bag and throw away. I buy 1,000 of these small bags from Grainger for $20. You rinse the pitcher of remaining grinds. Done. So simple. It takes me 30 seconds to clean my French Press and I've used the same one for 20 years.

    • @thestudio.coffee
      @thestudio.coffee  Год назад +1

      But then: 1) you're using a lot of single use plastic. 2) An aeropress takes 2 seconds to clean, dump the coffee and then rinse the base.

    • @davidhunternyc1
      @davidhunternyc1 Год назад +1

      @@thestudio.coffee With an Aeropress, you're pouring hot water into plastic. They can say all they want about Tritan plastic but I don't buy it. In order to shape plastic, "plasticizers" aka chemicals are use to soften, shape, and harden plastic. I'm sure that cancer causing chemicals leach into your coffee. On the plus side for the Aeropress, at least hot water doesn't come into contact with plastic for long amounts of time. My French Press, however, is entirely metal and glass. No plastic anywhere. You'd be surprised how little plastic is used to make 1,000 plastic bags, far less than the large garbage bags used in curbside trash cans. Also, I don't just use the bag for coffee. I live in a NYC apartment and every night I dump my trash so as not to attract mice and cockroaches. I use the little bags for coffee but also for all other trash for the day. If it's just coffee, I'll use the bag for the next day too. Besides, if you order Uber Eats or Grubhub, so much plastic is involved. I do most of my cooking at home and collect very little plastic. I don't drive a car either.
