I have a lot of differing opinions about this card. First, it is not a circus. It's a battle encampment. Who steals swords from a circus? And even if someone decided to steal swords from a circus, how is that any way of representing the 5 of swords? That would mean almost nothing to a circus. They don't depend on swords in order to operate, so that would not represent the deeply inflicting wound this card is capable of. Swords are very important, however, to a battle encampment while at war and someone stealing their swords would deeply affect them. His shirt is very close in color to the land on which the encampment sits. Yellow with dingy orange. This suggests to me that he is actually from that land. His attire does not resemble the tents in any way, except for red. I believe red is representative of the Devil card to me. His behavior towards the encampment is in the realm of the Devil. He is also walking across a stage, which implies he is acting or putting on a show. I believe in this card's core, he is charading as one of the encampment's men in order to steal their supplies to take back to his people and give them a better chance of protecting their land. And he is doing it while the men are distracted, toward the back of the card, around a campfire. This card, to me, is about making decisions and actions that are out of character in order to protect your own interests. Even if it means betraying your morals and using under-handed tactics like thievery or betrayal.

As in life, sneaking around always has a deeper reason, and depending on the other cards in the reading, it can have a quite different meaning. Romeo and Juliet were sneaking around, but they truly loved each other. They had to sneak away from tradition and the circus of their lives to be able to love.
