My father told me a story I would like to share with you. He grew up in rural México in the 70s in a logging camp in the middle of the forest. Back there and then, he told me, people had to walk downhill a couple of kilometers to the nearest town for a lot of things, like getting medical attention, buying supplies, buying tools or pretty much to get anything you could not acquire at the logging camp. One time, when he was about 12 or 13, he and a friend went to the nearest town to see a movie in a small movie theater that had been set up those days. He does not remember what movie they saw, but by the time it ended it was already dark. My dad and his friend started fast walking, or maybe jogging, uphill through the forest back to the logging camp where they lived. Half way through the walk back, my dad lost track of his friend. He says they where at some point almost running through the dark forest back to their houses when his friend took another route or something, because they did not arrived together at the camp. The next day my father went to his friend´s house to see if he was back, and he was, but looked like he had not rested well. My father asked him why he took another path to get back to the camp, and his friend said that at some point in the way back, he saw at the side of the road a black hound with red eyes that moved "unnaturally". The friend said that he diverted from the road to avoid it but the black hound chased him for a moment and then just disappeared. My father did not believed him because he did not saw the dog, so they went back to the point in the road through the forest where the friend claimed to have seen the hound, and my father says he did see some strange footprints in the area of the encounter. He describes them as "a combination of dog and goat footprints that stop at some point as if the creature who made them had banished".
Since I was born in Mexico the big black dog was a quédexo a demon dog born from darkness itself if one was to find a lone human that humans was said to be its prey

Years ago, I met something that could be described as Black Shuck. I was walking back home through a rather dangerous neighbourhood in the outskirts of Montevideo, Uruguay (South America), extremely late at night. Out of nowhere, making no sound at all, a large black dog popped up seemingly from thin air next to me. I was baffled but I didn't feel afraid and decided to go with it. I'm a very rational personal, and in my view I was more likely to get stabbed by a desperate junkie than dying because an unexpected animal was beside me. We walked for roughly a mile in complete silence, the dog always by my side keeping a distance of about a metre from me. It didn't look at me or anything, just walked. When I reached the corner of the house where my mother lived, I stopped to look around the corner asking myself what would I do if the dog insisted to come with me. I turned around but the dog was nowhere to be seen. It evaporated with no sound or trace. I walked to the house and went to sleep. I have no proof, but I always thought the dog, whatever it was, was warding me.
In germany, the Black Shuck is known as " schwarzer Hund" which translates to black dog. The stories about it are very similar to the ones of the british isles. It is said ro either be a sign of a death soon ro follow after an encounter or as a protecter of harm. In some legends it is said ro be linked to gods, demons and the devil himself.
This brings to mind Hekate and her hounds. She has her hoards of the wayward dead, and it is said that she collects the spirits of stray dogs who become her companions and do her bidding. I've been working with her for a few years now, and I read that you must not be surprised to find that spirit dogs and living ones alike may be attracted to you while working with Hekate. I kind of dismissed that, because dogs already like me, as I spend all my time with a dog, and they can tell upon meeting you if you're a dog lover by your reaction to them. One early evening, while the sunlight was still quite bright, I was chopping vegetables in the kitchen, and in my peripheral vision, I saw my dog, who is decent-sized and black, walk into the kitchen and stand and stare at me. I told him, "Just a minute, I'll wash my hands, and then I'll let you out." I heard a whine at the back door, and at once it hit me- I'd already let him outside- he wasn't the dog staring at me by the refrigerator. I quickly looked back, and nothing was there. Since then, all members of my household have had various experiences with phantom dogs. If they feel at home here, they're welcome to stay.
I also want to add that Hekate is said to have dominion over the open seas, and will either protect or damn sailors, depending upon whether or not they have earned her respect. For her to send a black shuck to warn sailors off of treacherous journey seems very much in keeping with what is believed about her.
Black shuck is still quite feared around East anglia and you know about Blythburgh . Linked with Hecate as possibly one of her hounds and she of course is said to haunt cross roads and so her hounds are also thought to frequent cross roads and indeed you will most likley find the black dog pubs at cross roads . In one village in Suffolk in recent years the pub closed down and was converted into a residence however not to annoy black shuck the owner kept the sign and statue still visible .
I would have to disagree with you regarding the county of Essex. Shuck is considered an aid to lost travellers at night, often "suggesting" people follow him to their destinations. i admit, the propensity to lurk in graveyards is slightly sinister, however, in Essex he is said to lead lost travellers to their destination if they are lost.
took a graveyard class hosted by Rev. Charles Porterfield; the black hound was historically the first dead ushered into a new graveyard. the black dog would be ritually sacrificed and then buried near the entrance to the graveyard. from what Portefield said , this is a practice that continues today (believe it or not). these black dogs have even been petitioned to attack and kill people. I recommend getting into contact with Rev Porterfield for further info these "black grave dogs"
One of my earliest memories as a child was looking out the window at night and seeing the huge back dogs, maybe even more wolfish then dog with red eyes. I never felt fear, and even made my mom go outside to see the dog, but it was gone. I've had other experiences with this same creature thought my life and now see it as a spirit guide
Maybe a year or so ago in the midwest when I was first heavily learning about witchcraft, my SO would leave for work around 4 am. On multiple occasions he'd go out and see a huge black dog with red eyes by his car door. He said you couldn't hear it coming or going and when it left it was almost like it disappeared. He tried to show me but it was always gone when I looked. We never figured out what was happening. No one in the neighborhood had a large black dog either.
In mexico we have something similar, a big black dog with red eyes, who if you hear its howl or see it something bad will happen to you. It will follow you so you must walk backwards to safety, however if you look away the next time you turn around the dog is bigger, it will continue to grow each time you look away. This really scared me because in my familie's part mexico had wild dogs runnkng everywhere, everywhere you turn theres a dog.

Whenever i’ve seen a black dog it was really to warn me but I will say I did ask to hear the hell hounds when I knew I could feel the energy and it was pretty creepy. I’ve seen black dogs but not a hell hound. I’ve only heard hell hounds and my grandma her family was Ireland and she used to tell us that there was a dog on the hill in Dunbar West Virginia that had red eyes and to not speak with that dog because she knew we were gifted. She used to scare my little siblings have to death with stories of creatures. And yes I definitely believe in them. Thank you for another great story

One day when she was collecting some sorrel for soup she encountered large, black dog with red eyes. She was scared at first but dog was friendly and prompted for her to follow him. She decided that she'll risk - maybe it's just light playng tricks and that's normal dog just big and it came for help so she followed the dog. There are two versions here. One is that she encoutered other man and black dog dissapeared, but second one is more interesting - she followed the dog to the cemetary fence where large stone was sitting. Dog started digging around it and when she came closer to help him, he dissapeared. She was very curious what is under the stone so she rolled it to the side and found pot with some pre war money and gold hidden. Newer one I found in the newspaper around 2005 or 2006, and it went like this: 20-something girl in small town fascinated with Harry Potter books was going home from work in the evening and shortest way lead through cemetary. One evening big black dog appeared next to her when she was crossing cemetary. He was very big and had glowing red eyes. She knew from the books that it can be death omen but she kept calm. Dog disappeared when she reached the gates. Next day she went full-on hypochondriac and reached to her medical services for all tests she could have at the moment. She was diagnosed with very early stage of cancer. It was still asymptomatic but thanks to early diagnosis she was able to have succesful recovery. Also black dogs are associated with two deities from slavic pantheon - Dziewanna and Weles. Dziewanna is hunter-goddess of the forrest and crossroads, associated also with sudden death (if you see her on crossroads with her hounds you'll be dead in 3 days), and Weles is god of underworld and riches (usually represented with cows). They both are associated with having dogs - Dziewanna has her hounds and Weles has his shepherds. And on the lighter note my grandpa had large, shaggy, black dog with light brown/orange eyes. His name was Lotan. Lotan was very friendly towards children but he used to scare a living sh!t from anyone who tried to rob the house XD Imagine, dark night, a bit of fog and large dog with shining eyes appears... Burglar managed to flee, but his trousers were hanging on the fence in the morning XD
I have been watching your videos for some years now and I have no idea how to show my gratitude to the fullest. I have gained so much knowledge from you and I appreciate you so much for all the time and energy you put into these videos.
Blessed be Lady Hearth. Love and light to you. I once saw something in Ohio that was unexplainable. At first I'd sworn it was a trick of my eyes. But it was a huge wolf looking creature. It gave chase to me and three others through Sharon Woods and when we got to the apartment at the edge of the woods, it was gone. Vanished. Scary thing was that other tenants in the area had seen this unknown beast too. Not sure that it was the same thing as you describe, but still a harrowing.
I saw one when I was 13 at a thanksgiving get together with family. I got bored and went on a walk and it was at a creek crossing. It was built all wrong. It was bigger than a black bear, it’s hind legs were much longer than it’s front and it had the scariest eyes I’ve ever seen. Huge, dark evil looking eyes unlike anything I could ever describe. It had dark greyish mottled fur. I began to walk backwards because I knew if I turned my back it would have killed me. I literally ran backwards and it vanished into the creek. Every hair on my body was standing and I finally got the courage to turn around to run home, because now I couldn’t see it and had no idea if it was stalking me. It was in broad daylight. One of the scariest swamp creatures ever. This was in south Mississippi, an hour or so from NOLA.
my father just saw what could have been a Black Shuck - but we live in New England in the states - Maine to be specific. he went to take his dog out to the bathroom (a small white dog) and almost immediately saw a very large, muscular black dog that he described as unmoving and eerie, that was staring directly at him. he turned around and went back inside very quickly, for the safety of his small dog, and he quickly went back out by himself to look for the dog and it was nowhere around. he lives in a forested area - and he thought if the dog was walking around in the forest he'd be able to hear it, but he couldn't hear anything - he searched for it for a while but couldn't see or hear anything. it was all just very strange feeling, to both him and my mom in the moment... it might not have been a spirit, but the fact that the dog gave him an eerie feeling (he's not the type of guy to be afraid of dogs, even big ones) is odd to me, and telling. I'm not sure what to do, if it is a bad omen - I really hope it was just a stray..
I had a big white dog spirit protector as a child. My most recent encounter with one of these was a couple of months ago. It had the same undefineable quality spirits have when you see them. It was oddly small and took the form of a medium pit bull but it had the glowing red eyes and the complete blackness. It just watched me from my front yard. My husband didn't want me to leave thinking it was a bad omen. I took it as a warning and asked it to keep watch while I was out. Everything was fine but it was interesting to see one for the first time in a long time.
I've always heard that hell hounds are the dogs of the devil that come get you/your soul if you made a contract with the devil. It's the devil's way of cashing in. It's so interesting to hear all these other versions and stories. Thanks for taking the time to research all this information. Very interesting. Thanks Hearth 😊
I do have a story as well. I don’t know if its the same thing as the hell hound, but I’ve seen something similar in South Africa. When walking through part of our farm we had years ago, thick with bush and trees with a road that goes through it wide enough for trucks, I decided to walk ahead of my father and brother. When going around a corner of the road, I saw a big black dog in the middle of the road and its length was the width of the road, which was very big. The black dog noticed me and just stared at me with pointy ears, not moving as I slowly walked forward, very unsure of what that dog is or if it’s safe. It was pretty far so I couldn’t make out distinct features, so no red eyes and it was during the day. Even during the day the dog looked like a black void. I started to feel scared and decided to turn around and go warn my father and brother of the big dog. The time they arrived after I’ve told them, the dog was gone. I remember specifically looking for footprints and I kept telling my dad I saw a large black dog. Found no footprints. It didn’t really scare me at first, since seeing the dog I just kept walking forward, but it was as if the closer I got, the more unsettled and scared I got. I think it was like a warning to not come closer, because generally I was a curious child so anything mysterious I would’ve investigated. I still wonder to this day what it could be. Very interesting experience I had.
When I was 18 years old I was headed to a small gas station near my childhood home to buy candy. Suddenly I notice a large black dog following me. Now this looked like just a normal black dog, what was strange was the terror it filled me with. I have grown up with dogs, I love dogs and even a agressive dog I would not be afraid of, this one was calm as well, it just followed me completely silently,, this animal filled me with insane fear. I hurried for the gas station, turned back and the dog was just gone, just gone. Shortly after my grandfather died. I belive what I saw was a hellhound sent as a death omen.
My mother possibly heard a Shuck while she was in collage here in the U.S.A. She said she woke in the middle of the night because she felt panicked and outside her dorm she heard a terrible growling and claws dragging along the wall. She never left her bed so she didn’t see it but she says she slept with a light on for a while after that.
Heres something that happened with my family that I personally believe could have been the black shuck. (I live in US by the way so I'm shocked that I saw this when I thought it was only a thing in England. Which btw, I called the Grimm because of Harry Potter so I'm sorry in advance for not knowing the actual name for it.) One morning back on August 15th of this year my mother was bringing me to work and we saw something on the back of someone's car. Now I know it wasnt an actual animal but it was a printing of a big black dog on the back of someone's truck. I got weird vibes off it but played it off as me being tired. I had said to my mom "is that the grimm?" Jokingly while saying its supposed to be a warning sign for something and left it at that. Little while later my mom texted me that she had 3rd degree burns on her hand cause the toaster caught fire. Now I believe that was an actual warning from the Black Shuck and dont joke about it anymore.
This is a story that took place in 2015, me and my friends were about 10years old- sometimes my friends and i will go play behide my house in this tiny brook and we usally bring my dog because she likes to play in the water ( she is a cream colored golden retrever named mille) one day we went to the brook with millie and their was this strange feeling that we couldnt really explain we also saw something in the trees looking like a large black dog, at this time we new about the black shook so maybe it was just are minds we also though maybe it was millie but their coloring was very different so we just decided to go home after being kinda freaked out
Dogs are guardians and hunters. Why should the Spiritual form be any different? I do think the many spirit canines are different. But I can still see the potential of them being the same being in some cases. I love this episode. I love canines of lore and legends, and love listening to you tell some tales of different lore. I can hardly wait to hear more. Thank you.
I had a encounter with one of these in high school it appeared in my dreams it was wild and raging and terrorizing my home and family it took alot of energy on my part but I managed to calm it and it never appeared again.
When I was a kid I liked to watch the sun go up in the morning. So I stayed awake and stood on the balcony when the sun went up. One day from up there I saw a black dog-like creature go throw the lawn beneath me. Mind u this was the middle of a big capital city. It didn't look like a fox or a cat. It was going through the lawn as if looking for food. It was a little bigger then a cat and thicker than a fox and had more furr but was not a huge dog size. I called out for it and it stared up at me for a few seconds. Since I wasn't a threat it kept going. I wished I had had my glasses on because my eyesight was very bad back then. I wonder what it was.
My foster sister said ever sense she was young or at least for a while shes been seeing a black dog big and scary just sitting in the doorways of her bedroom at night just watching her silently she did google it and i think she came to the conclusion it was a hell hound do you think it could be this?
I saw one, on the day my mother had a stroke. She did not die from it but she was changed forever I saw it after the ambulance took her to hospital I walked down the road to the shops to clear my head and get some things and I saw it standing in the yard of the jehovas witness church of all places. Just stood there massive like a wolf staring at me. It was not solid it was a spirit and it vanished. I am in Australia we have no wolves this was not a domestic dog and it was very much out of place. We have British and celtic herritage though my mums father came over from England as a boy.

lol maybe not "out of thin air" but I live in the forest and I have large black and white great dane (whit is underneath so often only black is seem)and she;s my service dog. One of the tasks I taught her was "side". I tap my hip and say "side" then wharever she;s doing she comes right uo close to my right side Does this count as often? Of and I have 4 puppies that are going to be rehoned and although they're not to that training leve l if I call babies babies thay all come running to me. So more than one black dog. 😀💜🦮 Excellent story telling. You always do such a wonderfyl jub. Thank you for sharing. When I lived in Suffolk county there was always the story of the black cat in the Thetford Forest in Brandon. If I''m not mistaken the black shuck bones you were talk were found not to far from that area. I'm wondering if these srories of some relationships.

Thank you. I love how well researched your presentations are, as well as your delivery.
That was awesome! I love these.
Nice one HW !...Love these fascinating folk tales.
I bought one of your T shirts! It's so nice, the design and the heavy weight of the shirt!
Love this ♡ Thank you, Hearth!
It's very interesting!
Thankyou x
Thank you this is just too cool 😎
yes they are true Another Great video from your Number one fan Steven from Lancashire in the uk
Great Podcast, love hearing about folklore especially East Anglian. I'm Suffolk born and bred lol :).
Hello from Suffolk. Bless it be
Heres something that happened with my family that I personally believe could have been the black shuck. (I live in US by the way so I'm shocked that I saw this when I thought it was only a thing in England. Which btw, I called the Grimm because of Harry Potter so I'm sorry in advance for not knowing the actual name for it.)
One morning back on August 15th of this year my mother was bringing me to work and we saw something on the back of someone's car.
I would call it a Fantazoide 🧚🏼♀️💖
Lol I'm watching this while there's been a bit of thunder and lightning ⛈️ happening, which incidentally I love watching

In Cornish we call them Helgi yfarn (Hell Hound) or ‘Key if-farn’ (Hell Dog that's in Kernoek (Cornish)
I think I like this "dog". 🥰🤗💖🇨🇦
Puppy!
🔥🔥🔥
This is fascinating!! Are there any books on this?
Dogs are guardians and hunters. Why should the Spiritual form be any different? I do think the many spirit canines are different. But I can still see the potential of them being the same being in some cases. I love this episode. I love canines of lore and legends, and love listening to you tell some tales of different lore. I can hardly wait to hear more. Thank you.
I dont know... Trash and Hooter and pretty hard to beat in terms of names, haha.
I had a encounter with one of these in high school it appeared in my dreams it was wild and raging and terrorizing my home and family it took alot of energy on my part but I managed to calm it and it never appeared again.
It would not surprise me if there was some correlation with Xolo, in Aztec mythology.
I wonder what it was.
ooo finally!!!
My foster sister said ever sense she was young or at least for a while shes been seeing a black dog big and scary just sitting in the doorways of her bedroom at night just watching her silently she did google it and i think she came to the conclusion it was a hell hound do you think it could be this?
honored to be the 3rd like and the 13th view
Is it weird that I want it as a pet 😅🖖
I saw one, on the day my mother had a stroke. She did not die from it but she was changed forever I saw it after the ambulance took her to hospital I walked down the road to the shops to clear my head and get some things and I saw it standing in the yard of the jehovas witness church of all places. Just stood there massive like a wolf staring at me. It was not solid it was a spirit and it vanished. I am in Australia we have no wolves this was not a domestic dog and it was very much out of place. We have British and celtic herritage though my mums father came over from England as a boy.
The black shuck I keep seeing has yellow eyes. That's the only diff
And he protects a person who is being abused.
We call them Demon Dogs or Hell Hounds here in Ohio.

Excellent story telling.
