My favorite place to eat in Savannah. I do wish the video showed the true celebrities of Mrs. Wilkes house. That would be the ladies and gentlemen in the kitchen who prepare the food and do all the cleanup. I never see the “grandchildren”working when I go but I do see the kitchen help. That food is good because it’s soul food.
Luke - Yes, we agree the world would be a better place if people stopped for a moment, broke bread with one another, and listened to other’s perspectives.
I was stationed in Savannah at Hunter Army Airfield along with my sister from 1978-80, and we ate there a few times. Is this still the original location? It's been so long, but I do remember the food being delicious and enjoyed eating with strangers. I seem to remember them saying grace, and calling the biscuits "cat heads" lol, and that we cleaned up after ourselves. Does anyone know if that's true? Of course the older we get the less sure we are of these things called memories. I'm glad they're still going strong all these years later. Maybe I'll get back there someday!
Wow I am a native savania and I had no idea that Miss Wilkes restaurant exist this is good news to me I think I’ll give it a try thanks for the info bless
Do try Mrs. Wilkes' - the food is delicious and the service is great! But know this: it is Southern food. It is served boarding style - that means you have to pass each bowl to your neighbor and they should also pass each bowl to their neighbors. That is my only complaint about Mrs. Wilkes' that Yankees don't know how to pass food. the food is delicious and the service is great too! Well worth the wait and the price
We are sorry that was your experience. We have been to Ms. Wilkes many times over the years, and never been in the situation your describe. The only issues we have had is there is too much food thus we end up over eating.
Chii - Thank you for commenting and sorry to hear of your experience. We have not had the experience you did and always feel that Ms. Wilkes is worth the wait and price of admission. The only negative we have experienced is over eating because there is so much wonderful food, and we have not been able to stop consuming.
@@ourcityhost Don't pay no never mind to 'Chii Dong Lin'...you can tell by his name he and his ancestors most likely have no history rooted in the deep south of America, where my ancestors worked the land for over 200 years. The only thing he likes is that salty water and noodles dish called 'Pho'. If he knew how much hard work went into prepping those meals, he'd hold his tongue because he most likely has never shucked and cleaned a dozen ear of corn, or picked and cleaned a bushel of peas...which is time-consuming HARD WORK. That meal should be $40 per person, not $30...he's nothing more than an internet troll.
Definitely not a tourist trap. I'm a Savannah native and everyone I grew up with would eat at Mrs Wilkes every chance they could. It is authentic and amazing southern food. I'm not really sure what you're talking about. I understand if you think it's a little too expensive though.

YES I LIVED A BLOCK DOWN IN 1974 TILL 76 LOVED TO GET A DINNER THERE. GOOD HOME COOKED FOOD
Very beautiful message this restaurant is sending. Maybe people wouldn't be so terrible to each other if they ate a meal together.

The Wilkes House could put Paula Deen's kitchen out of business.
The food at the Wilkes Dining Room looked absolutely DELICIOUS!
Love this so much! In the end WE’RE ALL FAMILY!
I love this place. My grandmother took the whole family there often,

I could plan an entire vacation around that bowl of turnips I saw on the table. I’m completely serious.

You definitely need to get down there and try it. I promise it's worth it.

The problem getting stuck with strangers is having a rude hog at the table who takes too much and doesn’t care if anyone else gets a share.

I meaaaan if racism wasn't a thing in the US. America would definitely move forward and the focus could be on things that are really important. 🤷
You're keeping the racism flame burning. Maybe if you stopped doing that it would help.

Not realy worthy of $30/person and one hour waiting. Over advertised -tourists trap. We were there two weeks ago.
