  • In this illustrated talk by Lit & Phil member and City Guide Pat Lowery, looks at the old Sandgate area of the Quayside with its memories of coal, keelmen, ballast hills, soap and glass, right up to the present day.
    As I came thro' Sandgate,
    Thro' Sandgate, thro' Sandgate,
    As I came thro' Sandgate,
    I heard a lassie sing:
"O, weel may the keel row,
The keel row, the keel row,
O weel may the keel row
    That my laddie's in."
The Lit & Phil Library is Newcastle’s exquisite secret library, open to all and free to explore and browse. This is one of a growing series of free online talks all of which are available here in the Lit & Phil's RUclips channel.
