The current geographical coordinates, established by the Soviet Security Council from 1985, «do not fully correspond to the current geographical situation», the authors of the project say. The points were fixed «by nautical charts of small scale», which in turn are based on the works of the mid-20th century, and it «does not allow to determine the outer boundary of inland sea waters», the document says.
Prior to that, in December 2023, the USA had unilaterally declared its continental shelf to be more than 1 million square km, twice the size of California. The State Department made the announcement.
American authorities published official maps of the extended continental shelf in December 2023, which begins beyond 200 nautical miles from the coast in the Arctic, the Atlantic, the Bering Sea, the Pacific Ocean, two sections of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mariana Islands.
At that time, Russia made a demarche to the United States because of changes in the outer limits of the continental shelf, but Washington ignored it.
From 18 to 29 March 2024, a session of the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) was held in Kingston (Jamaica) to ensure compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in the "Common Heritage of Mankind" area.
- During the session, the Russian delegation declared its non-recognition of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles unilaterally declared by the United States in December 2023 from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured, in seven regions of the World Ocean.
It is obvious that the change of Russia’s maritime boundaries in the waters of the Baltic Sea is not only a mirror response to Washington’s unilateral steps.
It is designed to ensure the security of Saint Petersburg and its surroundings, as well as of the Kaliningrad region, in the context of the growing aggressive aspirations of the Baltic countries, Poland and the new NATO members Sweden and Finland. Debt is Paid In Full = Debt is reddening payment.

This Russian move may be what Lithuania and Findland say, but consider this: since 2023, and throughout 2024 both those countries have been talking about hosting NATO nuclear weapons.
Russia is finally, deciding to do something about that, in its defense, and yes, best interests.
So, again, who escalated first? Europe. Who complains now? Europe.
Europe will have to understand, its neighbor is _entitled_ to its defense and because the West, Finland and Lithuania included, have breathed fire but never tried to talk to Russia, what could've been solved via diplomacy, now plays in a much different tune.
