- Pop/jazz singer/songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway sings a song she was commissioned to write by Debra DeMartini for her friend David Cryden to share with his beloved Aunt Ruth Rabb and their whole family. Debra shared the photograph taken of Ruth with President Obama as a starting point for the song. A subsequent Zoom with David and Debra provided Ann more stories and images for the song and many e-mail exchanges with memories and photographs helped Ann shape this portrait of Ruth Rabb and her husband Maxwell Rabb- an extraordinary couple who played a quiet role in American history. The song explores the rarity of a shared life of duty and responsibility with no expectation of publicity or credit.

QUIET CONFIDENCE
For Ruth Rabb with Love from David
Music and Lyrics
By Ann Hampton Callaway
1.There’s a photograph
Of a woman named Ruth
Who is right at home at the White House
She is ninety-eight
And the man on her arm
Is our first black president
This woman had been married to history
To a man named Maxwell Rabb
For sixty-two years
This Harvard and Radcliffe team
Served and authored the American dream
CHORUS
With quiet confidence
Quiet purpose and confidence
2. These two pairs of eyes
Shared a vision of one
As our nation’s story was written
There were wrongs to right
To make civil black and white
And for justice to prevail
With empathy for others, they lived each day
Facing challenges most profound
With never a thought of credit
For making strides
Crucial triumphs kept on turning the tides
CHORUS
With quiet confidence
Quiet purpose and confidence
BRIDGE
As Ambassador, Cabinet Secretary
And Presidential Advisor
The White House watched
Ruth’s husband grow deeper and wiser
And though it’s been years
Since Max had passed
Mem’ries fill Ruth’s heart
Which is still at half-mast
3.There’s a photograph
Of a woman named Ruth
Who is right at home at the White House
Now she’s one hundred-and-four
And the man on her arm
Is an eagle her husband
Helped to soar
CODA
It seems to me these are qualities
You don’t see much anymore…
Quiet purpose and confidence
