Central Contracts were a big game changer for English cricket and the national team. Players became England players who occasionally played for their counties, instead of the other way round. We started to see the benefits in the winter of 2000/01, winning the test series in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In the next few years after that, we would win test series in the West Indies and South Africa. Yes, we were thrashed by Australia in 2001 and 2002/03 but they were so far ahead of everyone else, it wasn’t a surprise. Mind you, 2002/03 started terribly. Nasser Hussain's awful decision to bowl at the Gabba, then Simon Jones suffering a horrific injury meant we were up against it straight away.
Personally I don't think ENG had enough in the tank anyway for the 2002 Ashes, with or without Simon Jones. Don't forget Warnie was ruled out of England's second innings of the G test and then both he and Pigeon were ruled out of the final test at the SCG, which meant ENG were in a way handed the SCG on a plate. Not saying they didn't deserve to win but it's definitely a situation that they massively benefitted from.
@@umeshsurenthiran9205 I totally agree with you. Both teams were missing key players in that series, it’s just that the replacements for Australia were better than what we picked for our first team!!
My response to a request for the England v New Zealand test series in 1999 would be just upload the first test please and forget the rest.!! 😂😂 that gives you an idea which country I'm from!!
@@SymooDavidhave you got any cricket documentaries that you are planning to upload in the future?? You've got a brilliant channel. Thanks for uploading some wonderful stuff. Even if some of it is games that England lost, which is hard to watch sometimes!! 😂😂👍👍
This was the One Day tri series where Murali had more problems with being no balled by the umpire in a game against England i believe. Wasn't it umpire Ross Emerson??
Back then, we weren't just beaten in the Ashes, we had to endure the One Day series beating afterwards!! Apart from 1997!!
