"What kind of instructional video is this?" It's the kind where you don't hide the normal stuff most everybody deals with. Good video with great lighting. Thanks for sharing.
I'll second that and add that it is good to see some proper working practices being employed. A simple flywheel locking tool to hold the flywheel against one of the 4 studs would help.
Just received my 3rd KEP kit. We have 3 sandrails with these adapters. 091 to EZ30 flat 6 and 2 swing axles to EJ22 flat 4. This kit makes it possible to run Subaru engines with the VW transaxle. The wiring is a different story but a good and fun challenge. Enjoy your projects and pass it on to your kids. My boys love it.
RIght on! They're great - have had zero problems in tens of thousands of miles. And the wiring? You got that right :D. Why we started doing the wiring harness conversions for clients as well. Give a shout if we can do your next harness at modernbay.co/shop/wiring-harnesses/wiring-harness-conversion-service/. Thank you!!
its easy as done, here in kenya its hard to get the conversion adapter kit with the pressure and clutch plates and starter too.then on amazon its $800 cant afford its dame expensive.
@ryantaccone6285 I bought my conversion kits at Pacific Customs. 579.00. This does not come with the clutch or pressure plate. I went with a 1800 lb pressure plate with the ej22 and it does just fine. If I remember right it was close to 700.00 total. Kit, pressure plate, throughout bearing.
Right on, Dan! Agreed - Lori and the team at KEP are great - never had any issues at all, great support as well. And this engine stayed clean for approximately 5 miles down the road, then it looks like all the rest - well--used and ready for adventure!
In the video you mentioned to reach out if any help is needed. Question, where are you getting your engines from. I have see so many and am not sure who to go to. I see a lot of engines adv from JDS . Which engine would you advise to use on a 71 Westy?
Hey Junior! Great question. I buy the short blocks from Subaru of America, then fully (and I mean *fully* rebuild the heads with new OEM Subaru parts). We exclusively use the EJ25 on customer builds, pre-drive-by-wire. Simple, reliable, robust, and pushes the buses with more than twice the HP they originally had. Thanks for watching and glad to help. Cheers!
@@themodernbayco Hello again and thank you for your prompt response. So, if I already have the EJ25 I could just purchase the whole wiring harness from you?
@@juniorclassicvwbugs924 yes indeed - you’ve got the option to do so here! It’s a bit cheaper if you have the engine-side harness to plug into, however. Let me know how I can help! modernbay.co/shop/wiring-harnesses/wiring-harness-conversion-service/
Thank you for the video!! Is the Kennedy kit designed to take all engine weight or do you design brackets to mate to the Subaru engine mounts as additional support?
Haven't looked at your video yet, but many people are posting Subaru conversions that make it seems so easily. Get the Kennedy adapter kit and life is great. Right? No one says anything about linking the Subaru ECU to the Vanagon.
Great point, Greg! It is indeed a challenge to do Subaru Conversions in buses the right way. And yes! Linking the ECM is a big deal. In fact, we offer the service here! Go to modernbay.co/shop/wiring-harnesses/wiring-harness-conversion-service/ to find out more. Thanks, Greg!
Briliant video . Couldn't ask for simpler . Can I ask how much the kit is ? Because I think am going to be doing this to my mates bug . He wants more power so I say this is the way 😊 👍👍👍😜🏴🦕🦄😁🤞✌️ Ps cracking video thanks for yer time
Joe, thanks for watching! We actually only work on Bay Window Buses. You might check out some of the Subaru Conversion Facebook groups for more info though!
Freddy, hi and thanks for watching & reaching out. Would be glad to talk further, but for now, the high points are that engines are more than twice the horsepower, meaning you can drive uphill without slowing to 25mph (which is quite dangerous when everyone is whizzing by at 70!). You don't have to constantly worry about the state of your engine like you do with the aircooled motors (adjusting valves, timing, figuring out the latest issue, whatever it may be), and quality parts are readily available and affordable which is no longer the case for the original motors. And the engine's form-factor is a perfect fit for the engine bay, to boot! Would be glad to talk further if you'd like - give a shout at info@modernbay.co. Cheers!!

Thank you @vdubjunkie! Very much appreciated - will continue posting full videos like this one soon! Cheers,
Excellent video clear clean to the point and not filled with jump cuts - well done sir and thank you.
Eric, thank you good sir! Cheers and best wishes on your project!

How much should a total kit cost?
@ryantaccone6285 I bought my conversion kits at Pacific Customs. 579.00. This does not come with the clutch or pressure plate. I went with a 1800 lb pressure plate with the ej22 and it does just fine. If I remember right it was close to 700.00 total. Kit, pressure plate, throughout bearing.
This solves so many problems with the regular motor.
No wonder so many people are going this way.
Completely agree! I think there's about to be a tidal shift in the Bay Window Bus crowd of going Subaru!
Awesome!
I am vlogging my 67 beetle build as well!
Megasquirt, suby trans ej255 shortblock and sohc heads....oh and a turbo!
Opening the hood on one of these is like opening a jewelry Box! And it drives as good as it looks!
I am running KEP in my 85 vanagon, no issues and customer support has been good. I love how clean these parts are, I tried and then kept moving...
Right on, Dan! Agreed - Lori and the team at KEP are great - never had any issues at all, great support as well. And this engine stayed clean for approximately 5 miles down the road, then it looks like all the rest - well--used and ready for adventure!
I just got a 76 tin top and the interior matches the shirt you’re wearing
Heck yeah!!! We have a video series coming up about how to install a pop-top roof into a tin top bus.
Really good tutorial, thank you
You're welcome, Stuart! Cheers and Godspeed keeping your sweet old VW on the road for years to come!!
Great job...helpful 👍
good video ,thanks
Excellent Video. Question with all of the vibration, do you need locktie on all of the bolts?
Yes, we use locktite to ensure a solid connection.
Do you sell the adapter plate, or rather the digital file of it? With CAD manufacturing services available that could be something with demand for it.
I do not, however, while the plate isn't technically hard, it's the custom flywheel that's the more difficult part to machine and manufacture.

@mitchtorrie7933 Great question! It is not - you still need an engine hanger/support bar that typically mounts to the frame of the bus.

Can I be your Brasilian, South American distributor? This was awesome thank you.
Thank you, Alec! Very much appreciated. You might call KEP and ask them if they're interested! Cheers,
How much should the total swap run me?
Good or bad idea, lock tight? On all bolts.
Great question, mate! You want to use loctite BLUE for the studs, and I actually use a very light coating of anti-seize for the plate to the block.
Now. Just curious. How about a Subaru to a corvair transaxle adapter. Has anybody ever ask for one of those.
@wayne p, thanks for asking the question! I'm not sure there is such an adapter made; you may ask Kennedy if they have any such adapters.
Corvair motors run backwards compared to VW, so I don't know if that pairing would work.
Tengo una combi año 73 donde cosigo la placa adaptdora para usar motor subau .me puedes ayudar
Roberto creo que ud. puede contactar Kennedy Engineering Products. Hablar con Laurie. !Buenas suerte con su '73!

I miiiiiight just disagree with that some guy. ;D Cheers and thanks for watching!

Why a Subaru engine to a vw? It is a better engine ? Does it run? Hope someone can answer my questions.

nevr sieze on the bolts
Great tip thanks David!
"Who doesn't?"🤣
Hah!
Subaru engine is better for the VW because as an air cooled car has a lot of problems the engine of VW.
Absolutely right! Air cooled is fun, but tough to manage day to day.
Grea tutorial, many thanks!
