    For those that may not know, one thing to note: rocks that are able absorb water and retain it are possibly a very dangerous thing when heated. That’s because when water turns to steam it has a MASSIVE expansion volume compared to its liquid form. Roughly 1,600x when turned to steam. Heating the rock up blocks the steam to a degree and when that pressure becomes more than the binding forces of the rock, the rock has to give and the pressure tends to rip the rock apart causing fragmentary pieces to shoot off. Not saying that each piece will have extreme velocity, but the fragments are still rock and are very tough for their size.

      In this case the rock was so weak and brittle that it came apart easily but stronger rocks can be extremely dangerous. This is why one must be very cautious when picking stones for fire pits! I'm not super confident on all the rules of thumb but I know it's best to avoid river stones or any stone that is generally water permeable.

    They were definitely playing you 😂 that thing had just enough iron to make it look like metal but the rest is just rock. You should try doing one of those experiments making iron from ore though. That would be epic

    There's tons of that material laying around on the ground. It has a little iron in it but it would never forge.

  • @ericcartrette6118
    @ericcartrette6118 Год назад +3

    I would suggest throwing it into a crucible and trying to make a steel/iron puck out of it, but I don't know if there is even enough iron in it to do that.

  • @bjrn-oskarrnning2740
    @bjrn-oskarrnning2740 11 месяцев назад +1

    That looks like slag from an iron melt, yeah, so mostly it's just silica with traces of minerals and ore. I've done a couple and that's the stuff the flows off or is left in the bloomery after you've taken the bloom (iron) out.

    I'd say you're very lucky it didn't blow up in your face, especially after seeing moisture weeping from the inside of it.
    Had it had more moisture content, then trapped inside the fractures of the rock will suoer heat quickly into steam, and once it reaches that point.
    It comes apart at every fracture in the rock, very much like concrete does it you heat it up while cutting steel directly on the surface if it, especially if the molten slag builds up in a concentrated area.
    That and the direct heat from the touch head blasting on it causes expansion at a rate it can't spread equally over the entire surface, and it explodes outward at very high rate of speed.
    Being as the fragments are jagged, and have sharp edges some larger than others they'll all penatrate flesh and clothes easily enough that some will go much deeper than others, but given how thin eye lids are even if you managed to close your eyes, the eye itself hasn't enough resilience to stop even the smallest of pieces, and considering the shear numbers flying every which way odds aren't in your favor, are anyone else who may be close enough to be pelted with who knows how many pieces flying every direction of open space around it.

    I am no expert but it looks like obsidian, which is a kind of vulcanic glass. Very hard and brittle, shards are super sharp and dangerous. Could possibly be just slag, but still sadly useless for forging :( Great try however, You are making great content!

    • @pazsion
      @pazsion 9 месяцев назад

      unless he actually puts it in something to melt it. then he can alloy it.
      act like obsidian... so melt it and mold it... sharpen it. itll be one of the sharpest blades you have until it breaks... but thats ok just remelt it.
      alloys may be possible but it may not blend well... would need a lot of processing to give it maliability
