Diana's voice is much better than Frank Sinatra's, she has a deep voice, it involves the lungs and the entire speech apparatus, at the same time Sinatra had a clamped voice with a small range, exceeding which Frank broke into a scream and did not sing. Therefore, Sinatra once defiantly danced to Diana during her solo.
What is amazing about this video is that this is one continuous shot from a 300 pound RCA TK-41 color camera. Those things were monstrous and had to be mounted on a crane! Notice how the camera "floats" through the entire number. Given that she had a wireless mic to boot, this had to be sometime in the mid-60's pretty high-tech for the time.
The song is very nostalgic for me. Brings back my school days. We did shows on this number on the school stage. I remember my white frilly..... blouse..
To all you pro wrestling fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when John Sutton came into the world (January 15, 1949). He would later become a manager known as Sir Oliver Humperdink. Dinah & John, we miss you both. You were both good at what you did. Thank you both for the memories. We will never forget you.
this was recorded in the later 50's early 60' in los Angeles CA on rca color tape machine. probably a quat 2" tape machine. rca started with color video late 1958 with an evening with Fred Astaire. this tape belongs to Dinah herself.
+Ericjc49 Greetings Eric, The USA started color transmission in 1952-53 but because not everyone had a color TV the Television Producers at that time right through to 1965 kept filming a lot of TV shows in monochrome (Black & White) to save on production costs. There was a TV Industry survey in early 1965 and there was an agreement to switch all Television productions to color by mid 1965-66 Season. Also, my parents were married in 1948 and the womens' hairstyles were very different during the 1940's and certainly NO color in 1948, possibly production still photographs for publicity but not in transmission. Here in Australia for February we ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A VERY HOT SUMMER !! thankfully THIS library IS FULLY air-conditioned !! "Have Faith In God"(MARK 11:22)
Drew is correct on the general era of this variety show. But Dinah did actually record it in 1947, and it was a featured song in the 1948 movie "The Paleface," starring Bob Hope, Jane Russell, and Roy Rogers. When I was just a boy, way back in the 60's, I used to make fun of her name and call her "Dinosaur." But Dinah was a real rare gem of charm, beauty, elegance, and an exquisite voice! Still is, through the wonderful means of archival preservation!
East is east and west is west And the wrong one I have chose Let's go where they keep on wearin' Those frills and flowers and buttons and bows Rings and things and buttons and bows. Don't bury me in this prairie Take me where the cement grows Let's move down to some big town Where they love a gal by the cut o' her clothes And you'll stand out, in buttons and bows. I'll love you in buckskin Or skirts that you've homespun But I'll love ya' longer, stronger Where yer friends don't tote a gun My bones denounce the buckboard bounce And the cactus hurts my toes Let's vamoose where gals keep a-usin' Those silks and satins and linen that shows And I'm all yours in buttons and bows. Gimme eastern trimmin' where women are women In high silk hose and peek-a-boo clothes And French perfume that rocks the room And I'm all yours in buttons and bows. Buttons and bows, buttons and bows
So much good reunited sounds for an incredible song! BRAVO merci beaucoup for this incredible incomparable sound historical rendition rendering ! MERCI BEAUCOUP! Emmanuel from Paris France
I came searching for this song. The volunteer singing group I am in , who sing in aged care homes , have this song in their repertoire . I’ve been winging it for a few years , but I always stumble a bit . So I thought it was about time that I got it right ! I love these old songs . Fun to sing and play along with on my ukulele . They transport me to another era . The residents , at the homes we go to , absolutely love us singing the old time tunes for them . ❤️😊
@CptMole Before Mafia 2, I probably would've dismissed this great song... particularly compared to the more mainstream 50's hits... but after Mafia 2, i found myself playing this song (among others, extracted from the game) as I drive around in my car... in real life... truly a great driving song!
Thank you so much. One gets so used to the ease with which she sings that one can forget just how terrific and how professional she was. How she stood next to that guy and did not corpse !! Did Dinah Shore ever sing with Howard Keel because I would love to hear that
I noticed i never seen mics near musicians in the 1950s and under. But you can tell there not lip syncing. Where exactly do the mics go? I thought i seen some sort of mic on hank williams guitar in the 50's but i dont know. thanks

@cadz4me I agree with you. In those days, no one in his/her right state of mind would go out without dressing "properly". We learned "good manners" in school (not that we always applied those but...). You had to show respect to people, your word was very important, etc... We were not called "ugly Americans" by other countries either. How sad. L
She's using an early wireless microphone. Pretty cool for its time. One frequency off and it would have probably picked up Burbank police department calls ...

Good pun.

I remember her so well growing up. She had a wonderful variety/ talk show that was just terrific. I love her voice. Very underrated.
Ella knew. They were close friends & she guested frequently.

Hmm i would've assumed this was Studio quality recording Not live. But maybe very great performance if so.
I think this was 1959.
@@timothyhughes1904 it was 1948
@@carrodowhatsapp2196 Shore had a hit record of the song in 1948 but the above tv show was shot in 1959.
I was gonna say.
There is no way that they had that type of camera quality in the 1940’s.
My mother loved to watch her show. I knew she was a great talent even when I was a little boy. Thanks for video.
She was the consummate performer , very pretty lovely and a legendary singer
Thanks for sharing this...I loved this song when I was a small child and thought of it the other day. I was thrilled to find it on You Tube.
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
Just great, love the swaying dress...thought she was a tad naughty laughing at that guys "instrument" poor guy, I sure it was very innocent!
No one does "Buttons and Bows" better than Dinah Shore.
Doris Day
