For anyone wondering, four seconds is the time it takes for someone to hit the water after they jump from the Golden Gate Bridge. I won't go into more detail, except to say, the opposite of oppression is freedom, dignity, peace. For many, unfortunately, the only way we can see to achieve this state is through our own death. I am far from advocating suicide, rather, compassion and understanding. Building wings out of things that can actually help us all to really fly. And the most important line in the song: 'You're Not the Only One!!" (yes, I am struggling too...)
crazy that this music vid is one of the first on youtube. site wasn’t even a year old at the time.
😮
😅
now thats a fun fact
Learn something old everyday
I always wondered if the remastered version of these videos will one day happen.
Reporting from 2021: This song is still a goddamn Masterpiece
Brilliant song. Such a nice tone from Corin's guitar in this song.
Just found it today an it's so good!
Checks date: I agree with your report!
I hope it still holds true in 2057.
@@paulmackay7265 I'd like to believe it will
Idk if I've ever seen a yt video without a single dislike :o
Their drummer is a damn beast! Love it
Fucking love her!
She drives the whole album
As someone who generally isn't impressed by drummers, seeing her live was amazing (as was the whole band; best rock show I've ever been to).
Great snare sound
lol someone not impressed by drummers smh
One of the best composed tracks I have ever heard in my whole life. Great harmony in the vocals, varied pace and musical structure. Superb drumming and exceptional guitar work. Meaningful lyrics and the whole track has incredible energy and direction. Bloody brilliant.
Amen.
I wonder how you feel now
Wow go listen to Boston
Yep, it's the unique high intensity energy of this track that keeps me coming back. So feels so slept on. If they'd come out with this album ten years earlier they would have been a Rolling Stone Cover, because their technical execution is exceptional and their brand is unique
I love Corin Tucker's singing so much!!! She's amazing! So much raw power and no fear of making a mistake or trying to be perfect, she just goes for it! So rock and roll ..so beautiful. I definitely look up to her as a singer and musician.
Lots of talk about how amazing Carrie is and I completely agree, but Corin just rocks it in this song. And Janet... Well, she is simply awesome. Such a great and talented band.
I was always Team Corin... Loved Carrie's guitar but Corin's voice is brilliant. And her guitar. Some people have told me they think it's an acquired taste but come on, she's incredible all round. ❤
Corin's voice is like a carbon arc projector like the English used to spot Nazi bombers from the ground.
Carrie is Corin's biggest fan.
They're all great individually and as a band. Janet rocks the hell out of this song. These players and this band are permanently lodged in Dave's All Time Top Ten
They are all great. 3 piece and they all sing. And play. Outstanding band!!

Four seconds was the longest wait = The View from Halfway Down.
I discovered this song a week ago and have listened to it every day since, it’s like it was crafted for me, the rhythm, timing, lyrics, I love it
This has one of the best guitar solos ever made in this new century of rock. Shame no one even talks agout this song.
greatest band of all time.this song hits HOME, STILL.
This song hits the heart really hard.
I have been listening to music since I was a kid, Rock, Jazz, classical... This thing I recently discovered. I play guitar, , but LORD the force behind them is out of this side of the universe!!!!! LOVE!!!!
This song and the album it's from still sound so powerful and relevant. I'll never forget the first time I saw Sleater-Kinney, when they opened for Pearl Jam. I was already kind of a fan, though not to the degree I would become afterwards. That led me to diving into all of the awesome riot grrrl music from the 90's and 00's.
Anyways, yeah, Sleater-Kinney are amazing and woefully underrated.
I love this song, '3 seconds was the longest wait' is perhaps one of the saddest line in all the songs I've came across.
FOUR! :)
@@qtrfoil it's been 12 years 😂
@@KevinMcAssaler And yet, it seems people are still reading these comments! :)
And "The lemons grow like tumors they are tiny suns infused with sour"? 😢
@@fran-kp9in wow those are some good lyrics
quite honestly the number one candidate for me for best song ever written and performed. the kicking drum, the nasty guitar and base and the angelic harmonies... all seem effortless and without too much care to detail to just hit you enough with the raw talent behind it. It also has the perfect arc of escalation for a song. true masterpiece still today.
It is so underrated! Any time I've played it for a friend or acquaintance, even people I thought there was a decent chance they would have heard it, they were always like "who is this? oh yeah, I've heard of them"!
They deserve(d) more attention in my lowly opinion.
The more I listen to this song, the more obsessed with this song I become. Every day for a week. Twice today. Bad Dance off their newest album brought me here, but I am living for this song.
The bands background are the little envelope windows....nice touch👍
Only heard this once in highschool by chance and thank god i found it again. Banger!
This is the Sleater-Kinney I love. Janet's drumming is amazing, and, of course, the "tool" makes every S-K song rock.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG! A MASTERPIECE! 🎉 4 Seconds was the longest wait...
Sleater-kinney were the last band I saw play live before the lockdown. It was awesome! Best concert I could have hoped for before the current concert-less time.
I saw Sleater-Kinney with Pearl Jam a few years ago. They really blew me away. The Woods is a great modern rock album. They were definitely a rare item these days: an earnest, hard rocking female band.
Hello from the future, you will be glad to know The Woods still totally holds up. Sleater-Kinney fucking rules. Always.
The Woods still kick ass
100% The Woods is still a great album.

Favourite trio since The Jam
One of the best songs ever made by an American Band, and a Top 10-15 Band ever. Geniuses. This is a fucking great song!
If I think I know what that song is about - I realised halfway through and when I did all the hairs on the back of my neck went up.. That is an awesome track.. Absolutely brilliant.
It's about suicide and all the people who jump off the Golden Gate Bridge.
Knowing her from Portlandia, its weird to see Carrie with so much swag.
Great song. Love this sound 🍊 Has a Luscious vibe to it.
Corin got HELLA pipes! So good!
This is my 1st time ever hearing or seeing this band. Carrie is such a bad ass! I was thoroughly impressed by this band and I'm excited to hear all of their other songs and albums.
Listening to Carrie Brownsteins Audiobook Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. (super interesting), I'm a huge Portlandia fan. But never heard Sleater-Kinney. Here I am.
Years late. I lived just of Sleater Kinney.Bravo.
here 17 years later and wondering how this has only 2M views
I randomly bought Call The Doctor.
Been a fan ever since... then discovered Portlandia when it came out, huge fan as well.
AND HAD NO CLUE OF THE CONNECTION!!! Bahaaa....
🤘😝🤘
Every aspect of this is genius.
This is one of my favorite songs, and a very important one to me, because it perfectly describes my state of mind over the last several months, and it brings me back to it sometimes, but I also feel like, at least in this song, someone actually understands.
I've loved Sleater kinney forever but I just watched Portlandia for the first time yesterday!
By chance I saw a Fender ad on FB. Never heard of these ladies. I’m glad I saw the ad. Now I know about Sleater-Kinney. They rock!
I had heard of this band but didn't know their music. I just found out Carrie Brownstein was in the band and holy shit, new level of respect for someone I already loved. Plus this song is amazing on its own. I love the vocals, so much soul just being belted out at full volume FUCK YAAAAA!
I just saw Sleater-Kinney warm up for Wilco in Columbia, MD. It was a great show and this song has become one of my favorites.
The is a really good sound! Hadn't heard of this band before.
I just heard this somewhere and the first proper listen now , that chorus pattern , the riff all drew me in but it's her raw and extremely powerful voice that knocked the crap outta me. Simply brilliant music.
I started listening to Sleater-Kinney after i first heard them on The L Word. i stopped listening to them for a while and i recently started watching Portlandia. after looking up Carrie Brownstein i realized she was in sleater- kinney and i started freaking out haha no wonder she looked so familiar to me
Totally digging this….AGAIN….saw it years ago and then saw it when Portandia was kicking….still great in 2024!
this song goes so hard
Gosh their songs will never get old, 32 yr old me still blast them like 22yr old me. Jumpers still slaps hard
Sleater-Kinney sorta saved my life. They are that amazing.
Car crash? Flash flood? Please tell.
Sorta shut up.

sleater kinney... i always knew that name as a street in my town, but then i found out an awesome popular band came from my town and named themselves after a street i drive on like everyday? MIND BLOWN OLYMPIA WASHINGTON FTW
+summerthelummer fun fact, Kurt Cobain wrote alot of his early music, including most of in-utero and like half of Nevermind while living right in between State and 4th before you get downtown. Theres a surprising number of bands from Olympia/Lacey who move up north to Seattle and hit it big. we have a disproportionally large amount of musicians here.
+summerthelummer So Olympia is sort of like Seattle's cooler, Indie older brother :3
+summerthelummer P.S. check out "Olympia" by Hole for another hidden local gem.
yea i know, i live near his old house and my parents went to elemtantary school with him.... its crazy how close he was with my circles
I lived in lacey and worked on sleater Kinney. Never knew about this band :/
I love watching 2000’s music vids.
Take care everyone.

Love love love them. Takes me back to being a teenager in Portland in the 90s
my 15 year old self would love this song, my current 19 year old self does too :)

sleater-kinney and pavement: two bands that couldn't write a bad song.
so true
They have bad songs
@@yucatansuckaman5726 I take it you're mad about Janet and don't like the new album?
@@sageearp5954 no you can still love an artist and say they've made bad songs, hell even bad albums. Radiohead has Pablo Honey and TKOL, Tom Waits has Foreign Affairs and Bad as Me, Metallica has albums past the 80s, I could go on.

I came back to The Woods recently and goddamn, this song is such a gut punch. I have a history of depression and suicidal feelings and I can't think of a song that's better at showing what that state of mind was like for me. I honestly regret coming back to it because of that, and I'd caution anyone with mental health issues on exposing themselves to it. That last line still haunts me

How have i just discovered this???? Bloody love it
Just heard this on radio 6music today and have now fallen in love with this band!
One of my true favorite bands. I've been fortunate enough to see them live (All Hands on the Bad One tour) and they were stellar. Janet always owns. A new "surprise" album in 2015? Incredible!
Bruh I still love this song and I’m 17 now💔💔💀💀
This and Call The Doctor. Best songs they ever recorded.

@@jessicaosborn233 I like this band but Carrie Brownstein is not even top 100 guitarists of all time... she doesn't play anything that is all that impressive.

This song is a masterpiece. Lyrically, musically and psychologically.
I first discovered Carrie Brownstein through Portlandia and loved her. Then I found out about her band and discovered great fucking music. I think I'm in love ❤️

OMG I am just the opposite! But I lived in Washington, and I know where Sleater-Kinney Rd is. lol Heard them on Canadian radio first back in the day.
The dream of the nineties is alive in Portland
Gratitude for the Vibe of Sleater-Kinney deep soul connection
That riff is so good!
Wikipedia - Sleater-Kinney was formed in early 1994 in Olympia, Washington, by Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The group's name derives from Sleater Kinney Road, in Lacey, Washington, where signs for Interstate 5 exit number 108 announce its existence.[9][10][3] The road itself is named for two families that lived in the nearby South Bay neighborhood of Olympia in the 19th century, the Sleaters and Henry and Martha Kinney.[11][12][13] One of the band's early practice spaces was near Sleater Kinney Road. Tucker was formerly in the influential riot grrrl band Heavens to Betsy, while Brownstein was formerly in the band Excuse 17. They often played at gigs together and formed Sleater-Kinney as a side project from their respective bands. When Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 disbanded, Sleater-Kinney became their primary focus. Janet Weiss of Quasi was the band's longest-lasting drummer, though Sleater-Kinney has had other drummers, including Lora MacFarlane, Misty Farrell, and Toni Gogin.[3]
Upon Tucker's graduation from The Evergreen State College (where Brownstein remained a student for three more years), she and her then-girlfriend Brownstein took a trip to Australia in early 1994. On their last day there, they stayed up all night recording what would become their self-titled debut album.[14] It was released the following spring. They followed this with Call the Doctor (1996) and Dig Me Out (1997), and became critical darlings as a result.[3] Produced by John Goodmanson and recorded at John and Stu's Place in Seattle, the record was influenced by both classic rock ‘n’ roll and the band's usual punk predecessors.[3] From Dig Me Out onwards, the band's drummer was Janet Weiss.
goosebump-y
Love the double foot move by Carrie at 2:35
Truly excellent !
[Verse 1]
I spend the afternoon in cars
I sit in traffic jams for hours
Don't push me, I am not OK
The sky is blue most every day
The lemons grow like tumors, they-
Are tiny suns infused with sour
[Chorus]
Lonely as a cloud
In the Golden State
The coldest winter that I ever saw
Was the summer that I spent
[Verse 2]
The only substance is the fog
And it hides all that has gone wrong
Can't see a thing inside the maze
There is a bridge adored and famed
The Golden spine of engineering
Whose back is heavy with my weight
[Chorus]
Lonely as a cloud
In the Golden State
The coldest winter that I ever saw
Was the summer that I spent
[Bridge]
Be still this old heart
Be still this old skin
Drink your last drink
Sin your last sin
Sing your last song
About the beginning
Sing it out loud
So the people can hear, let's go
Be still this sad day
Be still this sad year
Hope your last hope
Fear your last fear
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
You're not the only one, let's go
[Verse 3]
My falling shape will draw a line
Between the blue of sea and sky
I'm not a bird, I'm not a plane
I took a taxi to the Gate
I will not go to school again
Four seconds was the longest wait
[Outro]
Four seconds was the longest wait
Four seconds was the longest wait
Four seconds was the longest wait
Four seconds was the longest
i love love love sleater-kinney

I'll be honest, at first I was not into Corin's voice and I only came here for Carrie. But this has been on repeat for 2 days, and I'm kinda living for all of it now.
Same, but Corin's voice is the best part of the band!
@@ALK-le6pv Still here. I adore Sleater-Kinney so much. They've saved me in my darkest moments. This song is amazing.

As a rockstar that moved to washington discovering sleater Kinney is the best part of Washington
All my love for this band
The uncanny thing for me about the filmclip is that the 'jumper' makes her wings out of what my late wife used to call 'window-mail' (Laura couldn't open it in her life, it freaked her out). Window-mail represents Big Brother, dissociation; it's a weight; a burden. The symbolism of making wings from such an oppressive and unwelcome item is subtly profound. And if one is noticing, there is a curtain of 'window-mail' suspended behind the band... It's delicate, AND heavy... Respect to all involved. And love to all those who have ended their own lives, and their loved ones.x
Love that mix and bass sound. I'm here because of Portlandia but she really is a multi-talented person isn't she?

I just realized what is so familiar about why this is so special to me. It's the razor edge of melancholy that triumphs tho. Like Chopin to me. 2c
