Not only this repairman is knowledgeable but he knows how to ma a video: to the point and zero waist of time. Excellent!

I love to scrounge for hardware and items that will be used to make things in the future. I can always remember my Pop saying to me, "What the Hell are you saving that for?" One day we were working on a project, and I pulled out my box of Miscellaneous Hardware, dumped it out on the floor and pawed though it until I found a bracket that would work perfectly for what we needed. So, I said to my Pop, "Remember when you asked me what the Hell, I'm saving that for? Well, this is why I saved it." And I shoveled the rest of the hardware back into the box and replaced it under the work bench. He never asked me that again. Great video John thumbs up.

I have to tell you looking at your videos was like looking at myself! All your comments were spot on, all of the things you mentioned from curiosity to not liking to toss anything and the "hunt" to fix most anything I too enjoy. Only issue is I am overrun with bits and pieces of unsuccessful attempts. Still a boat load of FUN. Excellent video.

Good video. The humidistat is capacitance sensing via change of dielectric. I managed to refill my dehumidifier by adding a piercing valve(US 2 from Taobao) at the suction pipe and using R134a canister and pressure manifold.(might not be your case having FUBAR compressor running so noisy) Could still work after a few years.(minor leakage, not worth brazing even if you can locate the leakage point, no tools either) The leftover over refrigerant was still serviceable by placing it upside down, liquid at the bottom. Hence, consumed it all by further topping up. Since you can take down the parts so fast, you should go to the scrap metal business as well, LOL.

I agree, keep what you can user, and recycle the rest. I would also have kept the large flat sheet metal housing. Can be cut and folder to make boxes, covers, etc.

I did keep it actually, and used it making a hood on my forge! ;-)

When l was a kid visiting my aunt and uncles farm, (early 60’s) my uncle charged a capacitor from his farm tractor and brought into the house. As he passed his sister in law who was talking to his wife, he tossed it to her.. she caught it and kept up her conversation, my uncle walked into the living room and just waited. As she played with the gismo she eventually touched the pigtail to the body of the condenser and got shocked.. 😮 The air turned blue as she cursed my uncle, knowing he had set her up..😂

Dehumidifiers are a nightmare. They would last longer if they were maintained better. Would love to see someone like Dyson take a crack at a new design.

If your compressor runs fine but the evaporator coils simply will not get cold but gets cold enough to get a bit of frost then you can charge it. Your closed system has leaked refrigerant over time despite being a sealed system. ie you do have a slow leak - most do. Dehumidifiers and refrigerators for the past 50 or so years have been made without service valves to thwart guys like you and me. (Automotive systems obviously have service valves.) You can retrofit your system by purchasing a saddle mount Bullet Piercing Valve (that's a brand name) from your local HVAC wholesaler for a few bucks. You'll need R12 refrigerant, and a Bullet piercing valve. Valves have instructions in the box - FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!
These older systems used R12 refrigerant, so you must use the same to recharge. If you can scrounge up any old R12 1lb cans they used to have the appropriate manifolds and valve with them. If your system gets cold enough to get a bit of frost, the chances are no atmospheric air has entered the system against the refrigerant pressure. If that is the case, then all you need to do is mount the valve on the low side of the system and recharge it while keeping an eye on the frost level. I think these small systems took about 12 to 16 oz of refrigerant. NOTE if your system has absolutely no frost or zero pressure on it, you'll need to pull an vacuum on it leave it overnight to check for hold. If doesn't hold either toss it or find the leak and fix it. You can not charge a leaky system.

Try checking the humidity sensor with the resistance setting of the multimeter - see if it acts like a capacitor.

Soapy water can be used to locate the source of the leak. The snag may be replacing the refrigerant, as most small appliances don't include a port for refilling. which would require you to solder/braze it on. You would also need a vacuum pump to drain the air out before re-adding new refrigerant. The compressor could be reused as a small portable (semi-quiet) air compressor. There are you-tube videos for DIY quiet compressor using a refrig. compressor. The radiator could be reused for a small water cooler/radiator (ie small engine). Or you could re use all of the parts to experiment with refrigeration. You can use propane as a alternative refrigerant (works to -40F/-40C).

Good stuff. Thanks for watching. Didn't know you could use propane as a refrigerant.

Backwards inclined motorized impellers are way useful - you can put them in a square box with an inlet and outlet and use them for lots of air moving stuff. Not as efficient as a squirrel cage blower, but easier to use sometimes.

I took an extension chord and hooked the fan motor to it … black wire fan to black wire extension chord and orange wire fan to white wire extension chord, left ground open on extension chord and red open on fan… fan did not run. Did I do that correctly? Is motor shot?

  • @victoryfirst2878

Just so you know fella. Metal capacitors that when you shake them you can hear a liquid sloshing around are run capacitors. These can be tested by using electricity from the outlet to charge them and disconnect electricity and short looking for a crack sound or visible arc. Do this safely so you do not die.The start are all electrolytic type that are plastic usually black that can only be in a circuit for five to ten seconds max or they just start to spray a fog that smells like do do ca ca. Cheap enough to just replace, they usually just dry out without a ohm reading. That is the extent of what I know.

I've got a fairly old Swan dehumidifier and the humidity sensor seems to have died as it says E1 when I start it up. Everything else works but it doesn't read relative humidity so it doesn't know when to shut off. Unfortunately all the numbers I found on the module; I typed them into Google and nothing comes up, so I can't just swap out. It has 4 wires going into it numbered 1-4, so it's not like I can see how to hack a different sensor in it's place. Annoying as it's otherwise working fine and I don't want to have to buy a new one just because of this.

This is part 2 of the video. In the 1st part he did actually repair a dehumidifier. In the event a repair is not cost effective or you just find it's not worth the hassle then a tear down is a great way to find useful parts for other projects. I consider this an outstanding follow up to part one since it rounds off what you can do if the repair fails for whatever reason. My point is that calling this a "fake video", using far too many exclamation marks (one or two would do just fine) and calling the creator of this video a "little man" is far more telling of you than anything else. Your comment has done nothing but paint yourself as just another sad, small minded stain in the RUclips comment section. Anyway, that's all the troll food I have for today. Eat up!
