    Jaime Caruana born March 14, 1952) is a Spanish economist. From April 1, 2009 to November 30, 2017, he served as President of the Bank for International Settlements.
    He also served as Governor of the Bank of Spain from July 2000 to July 2006. Born in Valencia, Caruana graduated in Telecommunications Engineering from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) in 1974. Caruana served as Governor of the Bank of Spain for a six-year term beginning July 21, 2000 and ending July 12, 2006.
    In this capacity, Caruana has also been Chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision since May 2003. Caruana took over the Basel II project during difficult times and finally delivered the revised protocol in June 2004, earning the respect and acclaim of regulators and the financial services industry.
