I was taken, at 24 (I'm now 60), to his piano recital in the Royal Festival Hall London - vast amounts of Rachmaninov and Scriabin. I have NEVER, before or since, witnessed such magnificence and excellence - the experience has remained with me all of my life, really it has. Pity he became 'odd' these last years, and started playing what kids can play! Oh well! Another utter genius burns out and goes 'woke' and bites the dust! TRAGEDY!
I agree (unfortunately) but I still believe that a great talent and his given gift by natural causes will survive! Gawrilow is one of the very best musicians of our entire world. My deepest respect to this clever, smart and pretty spiritual artist, musician and human being!
Agree 100 %@@prokastinatore
I was there, too. The piano tuner got a standing ovation in the interval. We couldn't speak for 20 minutes. A woman in front of me shook her head and said you have to be mad to play the piano like that. The Scriabin fourth sonata you though he'd either explode or the piano would. And then the encores. The Handel!. When he signed my programme he ripped through it with his pen. He was a titanic force of nature back then. I am glad I was privileged to witness it.
Wow. What a performance. He was only 21. Incredible.
Gavrilov is a legendary pianist
Maestro Andrei Gawrilow, 1st prize winner of the 1974 International Tschaikowsky Competition Moscow is one of simply the very best musicians in our entire world. Forgotten and totally underrated. His approach tu Rachmaninov is equal to his approach according to Russia and also to higher spirits. Gawrilow simplifies this horrible difficult opus by "Kalinka", an old Russian traditional song known by all Russians that time. What would I give listening to him playing this live....!
I remember buying this LP back in the early 80'--not knowing Gavrilov--and sitting spellbound through it. It was a magical day back in 1976 for that recording. Don't know if I've ever had the reaction I had to any other recording of it. And there are more than a few great ones. How could this not have been transferred to CD?
This is unbelievable!!! One if the cleanest, most musical performances of this monument, played with delicacy.... The cadenza is one of the very best, only few can play it like this.
Один из лучших пианистов мира!!!❤
