I was ready to throw hands with Blizzard's writing team before I watched this video. After looking into his story, I don't think anything could have redeemed Arthas. There's truly nothing he could do to redeem all of the horrors he's done. (I think Sylvanas got out a bit easy, too. She was really just tasked with undoing her mistakes. Is that all Tyrande could think of???)
Arthas wasn't redeemed, but at least he wasn't denied rest. Death isn't an end in the WoW universe, so the writing team made sure he could never be brought back this way. The villain finally got the rest he deserved, and I think this is a fitting end to his story.
How many Sylvanas-like community service hours could have scratched the surface of his redemption? He deserved this end.

Arthas' life had been one giant manipulation from the jump and this condescending monster who CHOSE to do some of the most evil acts in warcraft lore sits in judgement of him and then dismisses him from existence like he was nothing. Blizz writers are garbage and probably only felt comfortable completely unmaking Arthas because he was a white straight male. No other villain from Warcraft has been as mightily fucked over both in the actual story and by a compromised writing staff.

Always felt that Arthas did the right thing. When you arrive to a place and find that all the citizens are doomed not just to die, but to have their souls captured and tormented by Demon Worshippers, and you know for absolutely certain that you cannot find a alternative in time to save those souls from eternal suffering, the only option would be to kill and liberate those souls before they can be claimed, not just to keep them from being used as enemy soldiers against their own kingdom, but to protect the most sacred aspect of life, the soul.
Jaina truly failed him in that she both knew of this alongside Arthas, but with her magical knowledge would have had a stronger understanding of the capabilities of a soul being corrupted and captured, and had personally seen the torment of those turned to undeath as she traveled with Arthas.
Uther, someone with holy capabilities, would also be fully aware of how souls can become corrupted against their will, but may not have seen the same evidence as Arthas and Jaina so had a more reasonable reason to reject doing so, but should have been more willing to listen considering he HAD come across the undead before this point and knew of the damning effects. The main failure was Jaina, who, had she been on Arthas's side, could have convinced Uther, with the entire group being able to 'save' far more and possibly even get a foot up on Mal'Ganis, though he probably had a plan for that anyways.

I always thought the same way and saw Arthas as a hero of his people, and a martyr because he knew what he did will forever be a stain on him but even when claiming Frostmourne he did so as he said "to save his people". Up to that point he was free and there was no flaw in his reasoning. He was a Hero till the end of his will. He was however betrayed, cursed, played by a Dread Lord, the Lich King, the demons, then finally the Jailer. No one actually saved him and till the last spark of his tormented soul his once friends, and the ones who either knew and shared his suffering or played part in his decisionmaking and pushed him down this path agreed he should be forgotten. What Sylvanas, Uther, Jaina did makes me sick.

Now i look at it. Uther and Jaina were terrbile friends.
Arthas had simple choice - either purges the city of ALREADY dead people who can become an unstoppable horde of undead or he lets them become just that and allow far more deaths to happen. If only they stayed with him and helped him get through it everything could've turn out different but they just literally ran. They were too cowardish to make that decision and proposed no alternatives.
Because of that, Arthas had an enormous burden to bear alone and that was what destroyed him. To even think that later Uther still tosses him to the Maw out of vengance (I don't believe in this "justice" of his) is making me hate Uther even more.

    • @ephemeral8997
      @ephemeral8997 Год назад +10

      - Mal'Ganis wanted Arthas, not Stratholme. He was using the plague to weaken Arthas and turn him to the dark side.
      - The zombies (and whole undead army) were too weak to destroy the city, especially with reinforcements awaiting outside.
      - Uther was unsure if the zombies spread the plague, so he argued with Arthas about it. He just wanted Arthas to study it more before getting into action.
      - Arthas knew that zombies do not spread the plague, as he had seen that in Hearthglen. However, he decided to purge the city anyway in order to fool everyone into thinking he was saving them. He wanted to be seen as a hero.
      - Jaina knew the zombies didn't spread plague, but she didn't speak up. She has always been one to stay silent and observe, and she didn't want to get involved in Arthas's madness.
In short, Arthas knew that the zombies were not a threat, but he purged the city anyway in order to gain power and status. He was willing to sacrifice innocent lives for his own personal gain.
I am very willing to debate with anybody on this topic.

I watched the human campaign playthrough for the original Warcraft III and it's really telling in what a cash-grab the remaster is that so much of the direction and clever presentation -- especially for in-game story beats -- is missing and didn't translate. It's of course nothing that the animators did wrong, it just seems like whoever was overseeing these scenes had no appreciation for how simple but effective the direction was.
If you want to see for yourself just compare the original's Frostmourne chamber scene with the remaster and see. It's so dynamic! Each moment of Arthas behaving in a concerning way throughout the campaign incrementally adds stress and tension and it finally culminates in this scene. The original is able to communicate this, and is able to get across how far gone Arthas has become, how shocking it is that he has crossed a final threshold, how disturbing it is that he lingers looking at Muradin's body just long enough to let us see it sink in that he finds himself unable to care about what just happened. It's an important moment but it isn't overshadowed by its own importance. The remaster, by contrast, is a sequence of events, set to a bombastic soundtrack, that tries to sell how legendary we all know this moment is -- but it feels so disjointed because the tension doesn't finally snap at this moment. Muradin falls over and Arthas takes the sword and leaves. Muradin might as well have slipped on ice and Arthas might as well have left the chamber because he remembered that he left his car unlocked.

Knowing what happend in the Shadowlands and what the Dreadlords really were, I begin to think that there was a spirit within Frostmourne.
When Arthas touched the sword his soul went into the blade and the spirit went into his body and took over.
I allways thought that Deathknight Arthas was a diffrent character.
The few seconds on top of the Icecrown Citadel was the first time since then we saw the real Arthas and Uther ultimatly doomed him to ethernal death by sending him into the hands of the Jailor who scard and destroyed what was left of his damage soul

It’s genuinely baffling to me that some people cannot wrap their heads around the fact that Arthas ceased to be Arthas the moment he laid his hands on Frostmourne.
Even when he went to heal Muradin from the ice shard that impaled him, Frostmourne’s pull was such that it hypnotised Arthas into abandoning Muradin and taking it up.
Shadowlands never happened. Remove it out of your mind and prevent it from ruining Warcraft lore for you.

"Is it truly righteousness that drives you? I wonder..."
This may seem like a weird line to anyone who pays close enough attention. Well, because it is. I didn't realize it when I first did the ICC raid, but he was talking about us, the players. Questioning whether we were there because we were doing the raid for the story (in which case I'd assume most people would want to stop the Lich King if they had a chance to) or if we're there to just get sick loot.
    So cool.

Arthas' actions have shaped and traumatized so many people/heroes, we can see that before and after his death as the Lich King, the decisions he made are still echoed within the characters and game world. This is why I am still sad that his soul was reduced to nothing but a flicker of himself and then faded away. I understand, he was always a tragic hero and it is tragic what happened to him. But I find myself wondering if that spark, could have just you know for a moment changed shape, turn from a boy to his adult self and just faded away in his paladin form, he did not need to say anything ... I think that would still deliver a better gut punch than getting belittled by Sylvanas... it would underline the tragedy and perhaps made the player think about how things could have been ... if only he wasn't consumed by vengeance and took up Frostmourne.

Nothing about Arthas is tragic or heroic. People simp for him because they find his actions justifiable, when he was selfish and entitled from the very beginning. It was never about saving his homeland; it was about seizing absolute authoritative power and a name for himself. Even before Frostmourne, he culled Strat with no authority or notification to the king, destroyed his fathers ships so his soldiers couldn't go back to the Eastern Kingdoms, betrayed every merc on their trip to Northrend....and THEN he mortally wounded Muradin by ignoring his friends' pleas/warning to not pick up the cursed blade, then played knowingly into every plight he found himself in. He went looking for trouble, power, and notoriety and got nothing but darkness in return for it, as he deserved.

2:37:33 is the point in time where Wow lore comes to an end for me. I know everybody is hyped about Wotlk classic nowadays, but for me that was the greatest in it's time, when many said it was crap. And they completely destroyed Arthas' legacy when they transmuted the Helm of Domination into that lame golden piece of sh!t. I got, literally, all the books, novels and the, relevant to me, comics, but nothing stands out like the Arthas book does. Sad.

You know what’s most jarring and kinda cool, when arthas kills mal’ganis it was ofc implied he was referring to ner’zhul the lich king as the “dark lord” when asking arthas what he frostmourne was telling him, but in reality he meant zovaal, not realizing ner’zhul and by extension arthas had broken free of his domination and thus his utter confusion and dismay when he says “what?! He couldn’t possibly mean…” because he couldn’t fathom zovaal letting arthas kill him as it was the first step to the undermining of his own plans. I love it!

For me as someone who played Warcraft 1+2+ Beyond the Dark Portal for countless hours, Arthas was the biggest frustration that came with the WotlK Exp. I really liked the whole Ner'zhul plot in Wc2 and was shocked when the undead in Wc3 praised his name. To me Warcraft3 was his story, to me it was like watching star wars, knowing Palpatine but not Anakin/Vader. And every inch of Warcraft 3 + TFT felt like his mastermind being the big winner in the end. Arthas was nothing like a pawn, just a Vader copy - not even a single moment did I think he would play any role in the continuation of the story after TFT ending. And damn - instead it was Ner'zhul that got deleted like he was never there. Oh and yes: This new Lichking became a lot dumber than the OG.
