Thank you very much!! My biggest irrational fear was violating copyright without knowing and ending up sued and in jail haha but this is super useful thank you so much
Your personality is so upbeat and bubbly and happy! Stumbling onto your video looking up how to find and properly/respectfully/“safely” use reference photos has left me not just informed but in a cheerful mood too. Keep being real and stay happy! 😊🎨👩🏻🎨
This was so helpful!! I'm always nervous about copyright issues when using a Pinterest photo as reference, but I can't believe I never thought of searching for free pics. Thank you!!
Hii I just discovered your channel earlier today and I honestly love your down to Earth personality in your videos! I'm planning on working in the art industry when I'm older and I've had many fears and hesitations on my abilities and skills as an artist since it wasn't something I decided to focus on until this year and that's when I realised the huge gap I've had between my friends who always did art as a hobby and myself who always liked art but never gone out of my way to nurture that talent I had. Anyway, coming across your channel was a breath of fresh air as art has become stressful for me these recent times with the constant need of getting better fast implemented in my brain that I forgot why I even loved art in the first place; it's fun and you get to express yourself through many different ways. You make it easy for me to understand, especially with your painting tutorials, and I especially loved your sketchbook one since I've always shy-ed away from making "ugly" or "failed" creations. You made art not stressful again so thank you so much for that :)
I just found unsplash and I love it! I will try the other pixel and see, thank you! By the way I love your aura. You are just a great person! Keep doing what you’re doing no matter what anyone might say.
Thank you for the video. I like recreating photos and it can be hard to find the right one. Even when a find a good one, it depends on what I feel like painting that day.
Thanks for the video it was very helpful there have been a few times I wanted to paint something and then I started searching for references and so much time flew by thanks a lot 👍
I think it’s amazing hearing about you being a graphic designer full time I’m currently going to college for it and It’s my dream job. If you have any tips on how to make it work good and not be a starving graphic designer i would love it 🥺
This is really helpful. I use reference photos as a reference or base haha. It never ends up looking the same as the actual photo which I like. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much!! I was feeling a little fancy so I put on a little eye shadow! Not fancy enough to wear something other than a hoodie but I tried at least.
Ha you’ve described me to a T 😂 thank you for sharing those websites and yes already obsessed and overwhelmed on what to paint next....wish me luck! It’s only been 3days in a row now that I told my hubby that I’m painting tonight and have done nothing but yes waste time looking for something 🤦🏼♀️ 3 dayssssss 🙄
I really need to follow that “paint at least 10 of the photos you already have” rule because I am so guilty of compiling and taking way too many reference photos and never painting most of them 😂😅🙃
Hi Emily! I started acrylic painting two weeks ago, and I find your beginner paintings easy to follow. However, what can I do to avoid streaky strokes when painting? I only damped my brush in water, not too wet, not too dry too. But I have different acrylic consistencies (example my blue acrylic is very stiff like a cake frosting, and my white acrylic has this gravy-like fluidity). And lastly, I have only these cheap paintbrushes. I'm having trouble with my brush strokes too, what should I do? 😭
Aww I loved this!!!♥️ This a was extremely helpful. It gave me an itch to paint today🙂 And unrelated question, I mostly paint with oils, but do you seal/set/preserve or however you would say it😆, you’re paintings?
@@EmilyMackeyArt hahah love that. You easily became one of my favorite people to watch. All love for you and this growing channel🙂 you have such a precious purpose on your life and I hope you never lose confidence in that
@@dhruvii111 i did prime my canvas with gesso, i done it by mixing gesso+paint, then i used the mixture to paint the background. and then, when I want to paint on the background, sometimes the paint doesn’t want to stick on the canvas and it looks awful :((
Hi Emily, thank you so so much for this video. I was literally worrying about reference pictures yesterday because I'm not a good photographer either neither do I live in an Instagrammy place. I have one important question to ask as someone who eventually hopes to sell her art. If I use the links mentioned to get reference photos can I sell my pieces without any issues? I have also painted a couple of pieces from pinterest and Google at the moment, will I be able to sell them in the future? Hope you can help me answer this as I don't want to get into trouble and I don't want to waste time painting pieces that I won't be able to sell. Thank you :)
That's a super super tricky question to answer! Because I'm not a legal professional I can't really know the answer, but I will say that unless I use my own photo, am given explicit permission, or have changed the reference photo significantly in my art, I don't like to sell them or use them as prints. Personally, that's how I approach that. Heres an article I found that might be helpful for you! www.thesprucecrafts.com/may-i-make-a-painting-of-a-photograph-2573673
@@EmilyMackeyArt thank you so much for your response. Really wanted to know it from an artist who sells. I will definitely spend more time now making my own references from now :)
Pixabay has free reference photos...and many other sites... For great ocean waves type it in and a guy from Greece forgot his name but you'll find him because he had great photos especially of waves...
You don't need an account! I have one so that I can "like" a bunch of photos and have them in my saved folder on the site but you don''t need one and its totally free.
I wouldn't encourage people to just search for reference on Instagram. Pinterest is another big offender. Even though I have a very small following I've already had people directly copy without asking and without crediting me and it's really frustrating.
@@EmilyMackeyArt Omg hi, didn't expect to get a reply lmao but i just want to say that your videos played a big role in my acrylic painting journey:)), love from the ph♡︎

Should a beginner practice painting reference photos or follow tutorials and for how long?
