I lived my life in acts, like a play. I said it was a gift to be able to move on and leave it all behind. As one thing ended, high school, college, first job (new town), first marriage, next job (new town). I always left people behind, never to contact them again. It was not a gift but a curse. Sad story. Long distance relationships are real....In the days of the dinosaurs and no internet I met a girl through a pen pal newspaper ad and fell in love. Listening to this song after the original is heartbreaking. Because the first song is all about hope, and the excitement of reaching your dreams with your partner. Then this song emphasizes the drift we have with people in our lives as we pursue our dreams, and sometimes the design of our future doesn't include the people we have in our lives today.
Ultimately, he's already moved on to pay the bills with his guitar and Delilah is still waiting and wondering what went wrong.

I lived my life in acts, like a play. I said it was a gift to be able to move on and leave it all behind. As one thing ended, high school, college, first job (new town), first marriage, next job (new town). I always left people behind, never to contact them again. It was not a gift but a curse. I never wanted anyone to be too close. I miss a lot of those people and hope they are all well. So, I understand the drifting apart but, in my case, it was self inflicted. I am married to a wonderful woman and have 3 sons (23, 20, and 17) but I still think about all those people from my past. Friends, lovers, family I have left them all. I always wanted to remember them as they were but now I wonder what they have become. I am on no social media aside from my youtube ramblings and obviously under an assumed name. If you have someone you miss contact them now because you will always wonder.

We fell as much in love as you can with someone you've never met, and for almost three years we talked every day, making plans to meet, all the things we would do once we were finally together. Sad story. Long distance relationships are real....In the days of the dinosaurs and no internet I met a girl through a pen pal newspaper ad and fell in love. I broke up with my manipulative girlfriend even though I knew I'd never make it to the other side of the world to meet her. Our friendship grew into more over time. I got my passport, got my ticket and got on a plane for the first time in my life...I still have the letters....I still have the girl...I married her while there at 20 years old, returned home without her (hardest thing ever) and filed for her visa. I waited 5 months before getting the first step of approval, after a few more months I discovered I had a distant relative at the embassy who helped finish the process. After 8 months total of being apart, she got on a plane for the first time in her life and joined me in a land strange to her, trusting I was truly the man she thought I was. We have been married 33 years, have 5 children, 5 grandchildren so far...she's the best thing that ever happened to me, and by God's grace we made it through the thick and the thin! At the time, people told me I was too young, I was crazy....
