My son and I love your videos and we watched this and I personally want to applaud you please don't feel embarrassed we can clearly see this wasn't an easy video to make and it took alot for you to do I know alot of people will relate the best thing you can do is voice your feelings and men tend to not do so easily. We all have connections to items and it can be hard to let go of nostalgia especially when they bring back such happy memories. Well done Ian big hugs

You’ve become the Master of Too Many Pieces. Having watched your channel for a few years now I think maybe all the gaming pick ups from marketplace Etc have meant you’ve taken your eye off the reselling side and remembering to shift more than you buy. Perhaps have 3 or 4 collections on the go rather than a few dozen. Also with collecting a toyline as big and old as transformers you’ll always have more scope to grow and grow the collection with no conceivable end point.

Perfectly healthy to recognise one’s traits, and to develop strategies but try not to be too hard on yourself. Your videos bring so much fun into people’s lives-that’s something to be really proud of.

A vey brave video Ian. So good that you have recognised the problem and are trying to address it. Don't try to do too much at once, BUT make a start! I agree with some of the other comments, for example stop sourcing and start listing - but I know sourcing is the fun part so maybe make it much more targeted towards certain items. One thought I had is that selling your 'collection' could go a long way to funding your loft conversion then... you could have the fun of building up a new, more targeted, collection. I wish you well my friend.

Try drawing up a league table of the different genres and niches you collect, from there you can start working out where to draw a line between true collecting and hoarding.

Fantastic video. You touched on so many things that I imagine a lot of sellers feel, and it certainly hit home with me. Stuff all over the place that you grow an attachment to. It's easily done. I've got things I've bought to sell, and then they end up just sitting around not being listed due to liking them. I look and think back to things I've sold in the past that I kind of wish I'd kept, even though I would never use them. When I moved house I was shocked how much stuff I had. It really is a concern. The Wife regularly picks me up on it.

From the start, we can see how much its affecting you and your mental health, which is extremely important. I think you should get the kids involved and the wofe and get them to help you go through things and pick out the things that mean the most to you. Set yourself a target of around 30-40% of your stuff and then get that all listed dude. You can use the money to book a family holiday, get yourselves away and enjoy some quality family time and remind yourself what lifes about. You're an amazing reseller and you can clearly see you're a great father/family man as well and by doing these thinfs, you can help prevent any future issues that might come from not doing anything.

Well, you’ve got alot of stuff there you can turn into money if you ever need to.
And ur right, start with those rescue bits and get rid. Even if you sell all of them and use the money to buy one item you need for your collection then it’s a win and success.

Also a part time reseller - not needing the monies as much its easier to think that adding it into a collection will be easier to keep for a later date. Definitely something I need to be more conscious about, but hats off for addressing its become a problem

Sending lots of love and support to you Ian. I understand where you are coming from but you are in a perfect position to sell the items and make a good profit. Look at it as an opportunity to truly refine your collection. Everything that you do sell will be archived in eBay so you can use that as a platform to reminisce. Lastly, going through your things and organising and selling them will be very cathartic for you and will be interesting to us the viewer as well.
    All the best.

I can massively relate to this as I also have hoarding tendencies, even though I'll tell myself it's part of a collection to try and rationalise my actions. Toy cars, clothing, footwear, you name it, it's all been accumulated, to the point where my loft, where I work and conduct reselling activities, is an absolute tip! But recently I've had a bit of a realisation that there's no need to keep all this stuff and it's as if the sentimental side of things has just evaporated. It's super tough to try and snap out of this mindset, but reading through the comments, it sounds like so many people have felt and are feeling similar emotions. But I know you'll make it work, whatever you choose to let go and what to keep; it's realising that a problem exists that can often be the most difficult stage to overcome!

Hi Ian, from an outsider looking in, personally I think you need to have 2-3 collections going (the ones that mean the most like transformers) and even then don’t try and be a completionist, just maybe have your top 10 transformers or you top 30 Sega games or your top 20 jellycats etc and sell the rest of your collections off, this way you can have everything you have left on display, you will also have a lot more space, you will also profit from selling stuff off, at the moment your bound to these items and your right it’s unhealthy, I’d let 80% of it go and sell it, just my opinion, hope you work through it mate 👍👍

First of all - Big fan of the channel Ian and have been watching you for around 2 years. I think if you were to rewatch yourself back in this video, its very clear that you know what 'you' want to do, its just knowing how to implement that. I also wouldn't be too hard on yourself, we are all different and don't feel as though you need to give yourself justification for keeping something. I appreciate space sounds like it may become an issue for you, but perhaps being more structured with it will help? For me, my channel is all about metal detecting. I have found coins worth £750+ plus, but like you I cant and wont part ways with them.
Anyway, im waffling.. do what is right for you mate, all the best. Jake

Ok a few minutes in and it's funny you should say about leads. I had 3 boxes of random leads today, I've spent most of the day going through them wrapping them up so they don't tangle and if I have more than 4 of one type I'll take them to the recycling centre.
I'm down to one tidy box now, 1 box to go recycling the 3rd box of was caused by wires being tangled and not wrapped up.

@@MasterofPieces yeah it's something I battle with too.
One of the reasons I use to justify it is, "it says something about me".
However I do have a cull here and there, like you say there is money in full collections of toys, books and what not.
It helps having somewhere to display what you want to show though like a man cave and stored in cabinets or shelves, so you can show friends and family.
If you have no connection to it maybe it's time to move that stuff on for example the "my little ponies" or whatever you never had when you were younger. I'm guessing your misses will help guide you, do t leave her out of it.
On another note I'm having trouble breaking away from my daughter's toys now too. Because I remember her playing with this or that. I'm worried my traits are rubbing off on her now too.

You've done a sku system for your eBay stock do the same for your collection. You've have done this collection through your Individual hardwork. I don't think it's a problem I just think a sort and a rework of display and storage will really be a more effective resolution. Don't feel bad about it, it's good to admit it needs sorting. I used to be the same, had lots of stuff that I thought was a collection but it wasn't. My advise would be pick 2 or 3 things and focus on those. So maybe transformers /ps1/pokemon for example etc. Then go for quality over quantity and have a set space for each collection you don't allow yourself to outgrow. Firstly pick a few bits from each collection you know you can do without, sell those bits and it will be like a release and you'll find it easier to start getting rid of more and more you don't need. Over time you'll also find you enjoy collecting for one category more than others and can maybe downsize or get rid of the others.

This is the danger with us resellers is that we’re always finding cool and interesting things that we want to keep. The way I’ve always looked at it is that I’m the person who feeds the collectors/hoarders. The only thing we should be collecting is their money. From watching many of your videos you save and collect the cool things other collectors would want and pay good prices for.

You enjoy collecting items, and you've just appeared to have collected too much. Maybe go through sort what collections you actually value and what collections are worth less to you than the money they will generate.
Also, have you considered that the nostalgia comes from actually finding them in the wild rather than buying them and keeping them in a large collection where they probably don't get looked at much from there on.

For most of us the Mrs would be telling us to black bag everything and get down the tip.
You should raise enough money to convert the garage into your Man Cave - nice shelving/lighting etc and display your refined collection.
It'll give you something to focus on and a real purpose behind each sale with the end goal being a fantastic new space that represents you and the channel.

I was trying to sum up my thoughts last night on this and tbf the above reply kind of sums it up.
The wife wouldn't have this for a second, stuff and things in every room, the mental toll would be insane. If your family aren't fussed by this then more power to you but it's enabling behaviour because that's become an issue hence your own video.
I've recently emptied my shed and loft and the amount of crap, even if it has 'value' was ridiculous. Move it on or create a proper space for it. If you can't display it now or have no plans to in the near future, it should go, otherwise its stuff in boxes no one gets to enjoy.
I think some tough love is needed on this one, I hope something positive comes out of this.

I can see the stress in your body language at just the thought of what you are going through. I thought your idea of having a more focussed collection a great idea, as I too have a collector ‘nature’. Don’t try and do this overnight. Be very specific how you want it to be and move toward that at a pace that is comfortable for you. One of your viewers commented about not sourcing anymore until you have listed all the unsold items. I believe this is a good suggestion, but again, go at your pace, such as go out sourcing one Wednesday, the next Wednesday, you list your attic items, even if it was just a few, just to get you moving in the right direction. Happy to chat more if you want to. All the very best.

Big fan of your channel, but to be honest the boundery between hoarding and collecting looks pretty thing in your household. I find and collect a bit, but mostly sell! And to be frank everything in my house and storage could be for sale, except the living creatures... The problem for you could be that you are collecting to many different specialties. Most collectors stick to a couple of small or one big favourite thing. For me vintage star wars from the 80's. You are collecting so much stuff, that is ends up in boxes... and boxes (even tidy, etc) equals = hoarding. Also and don't take it the wrong way, but your little boys are following in your footsteps maybe a little to0 much. They are already collecting all sorts of stuff at a really young age... You take them to thrift stores, car boot sales, and they always get something for collections... You even say all the time: "For the collection boys?". Everybody gives presents / spoils there kids in there own way, i understand and respect! We try to give them really cool stuff a couple of times a year: birthdays, christmas / sinterklaas (in the netherlands) and when they get a schoolreport or something, and they can spend weekly allowens if they want (but mostly they just safe up). In that way getting something special really stays special. When you get stuff every other day, maybe it bcomes too easy and normal... you know? Also, my girlfriend would freak out if my for sale of collection stuff would overflow the house! With regards to a healthy relationship collection / hoarding needs to stay a low and for many women unnoticable level I have learned...! Again, love your channel and the way you approach selling and are always a positive guy!

I had a similar problem with transformers afew years back and i made a big decision to only collect ones from G1, G2 and trilogy i have never looked back since making the decision is easy doing it is not but once you get it motivated it gets easier to not pick up ones i dont want :)

I used to collect random 'stuff' that i liked. It could be anything. My wife cured me after i met her as she didnt like any of it on display in the house, so it was boxed up and stored in the garage. Because it was boxed up, i couldnt display it properly and never saw most of it. Seven years later someone said to me its just expensive insulation for the garage and they were right. I started to sell my stuff at the flea market in Carmarthen, which was an eye opener for my wife, as she would have skipped the lot. After a few visits, i was running low on stock, so i started going to auctions to get more stuff to sell. This was now financing a holiday and trips out, so all was good. I now no longer collect anything that isnt for sale. Since covid, I dont sell at the flea markets or boot sales any more, just on ebay.
Keep one or two collections and sell the rest. Bin your uni stuff.

I completely agree with this. Personally I think the best way to resell is to keep personal attachment out if it. If you can't sell it or display it it's worthless.

    It's all just stuff mate.
Whatever came from the loft, sell it. Put the profits to one side and use it for a holiday with the kids next summer.
    That gives you a goal.
    Good luck

Wow. That was a really honest, heartfelt video and I absolutely applaud you for that. I think when collections start invading other rooms in the house it can start to be a problem, which was when I first noticed that I may have a hoarding problem. Spent the weekend in my garage going through my collection and random paperwork that I seem reluctant to bin and it is really difficult if you aren't in the right mindset to tackle it. I think the fact that you are aware that it may be getting out of hand is the first step. I wish you all the best in sorting it.

You’ve got what 15 maybe 20 grand of listings sitting there, maybe more. Just cash it in. Obviously keep all Nintendo & PlayStation stuff especially Nintendo handhelds. All those toys need to be listed and sold. It’s not ok to waste all that space. Remember in this trade space is money and you wasting so much money by not utilizing your space. I bet you could sell all those toys and odds and sods then afford to pay a builder to do some upgrades in the garage for instance.

I can hear how anxious you are Ian, If I was to give you any advice it would be to keep only 2 or 3 going , like transformers, masters of the universe etc..sell the rest and thank your lucky stars your wife is still with you, Its ok when it is in you own space like a shed but when it starts creeping into other peoples spaces like your bedroom ,that's not on. I also think your kids will benefit from seeing you scaling it down, then they will say yes we can have a collection for a while then we get rid..GOOD LUCK !!! ♥♥

Love the video Ian, I’m currently 10 minutes in, not sure of the outcome. Personally “hoarding” or collecting things that are “alternative investments”
Likes of the retro games / consoles (some toys) is fine to go up the attic for a Rainy day “retirement fund”
But for sure the likes of the rescue bots etc, just list & get them gone.
Ideally if you are collecting you want to be able to display your collection rather than having it tucked away in the attic

Have you heard of the 7 Whys? You start with a broad question like ‘ why do i like collecting?’ Whatever you answer ask why again and keep going until you drill down into whats going on , very interesting self reflection & very helpful

If it was me, I would go through it carefully, selling anything I had no real nostalgic attachment to. Then I would buy proper plastic storage tubs/boxes for the stuff I wanted to keep/collect and possibly catalogue it all too. Would be easier to stack/store and keep rather than shoved in cardboard boxes. If you have a few of the same item (you mentioned you have a few Nintendo DS consoles for example), keep the nicest one and sell the others. As for old school work /books, I still have some of those, I did get rid of the boring crap and just kept old school reports for now. Its hard but I felt better for it. Its probably very daunting to you as it seems like a big job right now but chip at it and do a little bit every day and it will help clear your mind. Just my thoughts, good luck with it!

This really hit home, I've got a few years on you, but my collecting started with 1 graphic novel The dark knight returns which I bought back in 91-92 well ive now got a loft full, a spare room full, and a 8×10 shed. My collection toys I never had as a child and been one of five we had very little. But it's evolving everyday I see a toy line I like and bang, my latest thing is marvel sellects and the build a figure lines. I do sell but only to fuel my other addiction which is metal detecting. Anyway I won't bore you but just know you are nt alone and if you have any marvel figures let me know I'd be happy to take them off your hands

Don't make any rash decisions regarding your collection. Have a good think about it before making changes. If I were you, I'd lose the duplicate Gameboys, do you really need a PS3 RDR2 when you have it on PS4? There's some modern stuf on your shelf where that classic Ultra Magnus could be.... etc etc.
Perhaps donate the Pokemon plushies to Connor?
    ...lastly...get a bigger shed 😂

I have such a problem buying cameras. I have more in the unopened death pile probably enough to last a year I do not need to buy more but I do . And I keep doing it. I’m just going to have to sell stuff cheaper, multiple platforms and get the money in rather than out. Throughly recommend a quick books account, connecting an account AB you’ll see how much you are spending on stock

Ian,sorry to say mate, you are a hoarder, storage is everything these days mate.Have your collection and make a point to yourself, that youve got wot you want and imo get some stuff together that your kids/grandkids would enjoy and like and with the rest,if you havent worn it or looked at it or used it in 3-6 month period ,sell it,bin it or charity shop it,You will feel so cleansed and the space youve made will be your reward and of course the cash🤑,its just my opinion but i can feel your anxiety in this post .

What you can also look at is why be dull and ordinary and boring imagine a dull wooden background? Now collecting has positives and negatives and avenues and alleyways and if it loses it's purpose becomes a trap. Looking at it not many doubles but there are low end items that are dragging the display down. The battle of misplaced items is real and a mind puzzle you want to solve is OCD you can beat it by gifting the item that caused it then it means nothing and like everything will be forgotten in a generation. A positive is the people are inspired to collect on seeing your collection.

You are your own worst enemy, but you answered your own question. i can certainly relate to this so much that it's like an addiction or an addictive personality you need to choose, which means the most to you out of the collections and the others make money from them to make the man cave or a roof conversion or a cracking holiday that is with family and friends they say we cant take the things we have with us but you certainly can make memories you will figure it out in time just enjoy what is the most enjoyable part of your resources take care and dont beat yourself up with it hope to see more videos soon

Storing all your collectables in the loft is a bad idea mate. Also, the way i look at collecting is if i cant display it properly its not a collection worth having. Ive sold off all of my collections over the years and now just focus on the ps4 and display it so i can appreciate it.

An idea that might help you, keep a spreadsheet with millions of tabs for each different category - log what you have and list it. Get it sold and gone but the collector part of you will have that record that you owned it at some point - even allows you to keep "collecting" moving forward but instead of throwing it in the loft or spare room you're just adding it to the spreadsheet then getting it gone!

Good luck to you and well done for sharing these thoughts as you wont be alone in having them.
Personally i cant empathise as I have no attachment to things.
However i do have a hoarder in my family and can confidently day you are not a hoarder.
As you said in your video, its scraps of paper, packaging for things, free stuff from magazines etc. But on top of that, they dont think theu have an issue.
The fact you're asking these questions suggests its not a hoarder issue but an attachment issue.
Perhaps pick 2 or 3 categories of things that you have strongest attachment to and collect just those. Sell the rest to fund.
As others have said, redesign the stuff in the back drop as it doesn't look great at the moment and just looks like an unorganised pile.
    Good luck though
