Killer setup. The only change I made was adding the Wooden Camera battery swing on to the back of the rods for the V Mount. Allows me to swing the battery away from screen for quick adjustment access. Great video.

thank you so much for taking your time to go through your awesome rig so it gives us better ideas of how to configure our setups. I love your format. step-by-step, smooth, to the point, and listed in description. THANK YOU!
This is probably the safest method. Having both the monitor and camera powered by the same battery can in rare cases cause a ground loop where if the monitor loses its ground (or earth) connection it finds the next nearest point which is through the HDMI. This results in the hdmi chip being fried on the main board and needing replacement. I’ve done this twice on my GH5s but learnt about what causes it in the Blackmagic forum s as it is more common with the pocket 4K.
Great video. Question though: I have pretty much the same set up, holding the camera's top handle with the right hand and constantly having to switch hands to access the buttons and display. Do you have a trick or did you update your set up since then?
My biggest problem!!! One solution for a while was to use a touchscreen monitor that allows camera control. But those have limited controls. So I just started trying to train myself to hold with the left and focus and operate with my right.
One of the cleanest handheld builds I’ve seen for it so far. Been running a bit more of a shoulder mount rig but finding it a bit counter intuitive given the portable nature of the camera. Probably gonna give this one a try as I’ve got 80% of the required materials on hand already. Sweet stuff man!
Let me know how it works out and if the footage is similar enough in stability for your uses! It's all about keeping it heavy and keeping 3 or more points of contact with the camera. And that helps you have most of the gear. Thanks for the comment!

Brian! Holy shit! It's Jake! Dude I just got a BMPCC4K and have been looking into how to get a v mount and came across your channel! I'm starting to work on rigging mine out. Just sold my GH5S for this bad boy and am so excited.
This video made me an immediate subscriber to your channel. I love the way you showed us your rig (the jump-cuts are awesome, man). Do you maybe also have a shoulder rig for this system? Oh...and thanks also for the lens recommendations.
Simple Sandals Media thank you bunches! I will do a similar video with a shoulder rig within the next month that might help answer any questions about that topic 😁
My BMPCC 4K came in last week and it died on me. But I have a new one coming this week and I love your rig setup. Going to replicate it. Thanks for the video!
Thought I'd chime in since this vid was so helpful with building my own rig. A better option (imho) for the v mount Battery is to attach a Smallrig Vlock assembly Cheese Plate to a "Camvate Adjustable Monitor Support with 15mm rod block" (check it at B&H w/o cheeseplate) directly. I prefer this to one of those cheeseplates/battery plate combos which look like they'll break in a few months time. The Camvate piece allows the battery to swing back to access screen perfectly ( and its much cheaper option than the Indipro Battery Plate or Wooden Camera Battery Swing) and it can tilt at an angle that allows you to press it into your stomach comfortably and create more stability. Cheers
This was a beautiful video! Thank you for sharing your rig. I've been looking around, trying to find the best option for my own Blackmagic and you've inspired me greatly. Much appreciated :)
Wonderfull video! How come not more people have subscribed!? I agree that the 25mm is a must for MFT, the first lense i bought for my Lumix G85! So cheap and so wonderfull! Can't wait to finally be able to buy the BMPCC 4k and rig it out just like this!
TheHitBrainiac I hear you! There is a plug-in that lets you edit braw! But tbh the more I shoot in prores the more I fall in love with it. It’s crazy flexible and super smooth to edit and scrub with
Brian Durkee I haven’t had any bad scrubbing shooting raw so far but the files are software is for windows only so far. I hope to see it soon for Mac eventually I’m sure I’ll end up doing pro res and stick to Premiere I’m giving Davinci a go plus it was free
LOVE this setup dude! Really gotta slim down my rig - it's a bit all over the place right now. Gonna pick up a few things here and there from this setup. Subbed!
Thanks for the post man ! I pretty much followed your exsact build , Tether Tools opened a supplier in the UK , V-MOUNT is excellent quality , went with a SmallHD 701 as I already owned one . Great vid and great camera , cheers
@@brian.durkee it actually saved me a fortune your set up , I had issues mounting the BMPCC4K to my Ronin ( original ) , I hadn't thought about it untill I built the rig , the V-Mounts weight now pushes the camera past the Ronin mount , allowing a fantastic balance on the rig designed for larger payloads , the glide is perfect , the extra weight allows the shot to lose that gimble feel and gives an almost dolly esc tracking feel , really impressed , but again thanks for the build review , without extrending out and building the large v-mont set up I wouldn't have realized the potential in it , I now don't need to sell my Ronin , which no matter the hate has never let me down in 4 year of use . thanks again .
Love it! I’m working on building my rig for the BMPCC 4K. I’ll probably use this as a model. Love the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 OIS though. That stays on my camera 90% of the time.
Anthony Greene right on! Dude that lens is the dream. It’s looks and feels amazing and the fact you love it so much makes me want to pick it up even more!
Thank you sir, this was amazing. I do have one ask of you, would you be so kind as to make a video about what gimbal would work best with this camera? Wish you all the best!
Yup I can do that certainly! This rig setup isn't meant for gimbal use but It is possible to do something with mounting the V Mount on the solid part of the gimbal.
Great setup! I'm considering picking up the camera myself. Nice job on the physics lesson haha. We actually took some engineering classes together at the U of U. I knew I recognized your face when the video came up haha.
Brian Durkee I want to put together a local action sports community up here in Washington and I want a proper camera dedicated for capturing video. Would you recommend the BMCC for shooting action sports on a gimbal setup?
how do you do manual focusing when it's this heavy? to keep one hand on side the camera looks heavy. Or do you only use the top handle when focusing? Asking because I want to get a rig too
A balance of all of these! Just whatever feels right but typically will brace against body, best way to find out what works for you is to go out and shoot with a similar system!
So you didn’t need an adapter piece for the rode mic to work in the bmpcc 4K? If you didn’t, what are the settings you use for the audio to come from the rode?
No one has address this! Nice job. Many are comparing the 4K & 6K to the Z Cams. But the fact is that Z cam is more shakey due to the small size of the body and lack of weight. An extreme comparison would be the black magic ursa held by the grip handle. This would provide better stability and less shake. BMPCC is obviously smaller but still has width and weight to give it stability.
Man oh man.. Really like the rig setup! Super simple and super awesome..... Probably gonna build this. Currently on a Sony A7III so it'll be a little investment.. What do you think about starting with a Canon 18-35mm f/1.8 on with a speed booster ef -> mft adapter? =D Lucky Hunting dude!
Hi! Please help! So I’m getting the bmpcc 6k and I’m going to buy the parts listed in the video. Question though, what gimbal do you recommend for these attachments?
Also how much life will the 6k Blackmagic have on the gimbal? Could I attach an external battery to the camera/gimbal for more batter life? Also with the external ssd card, could I attach that to the camera while on the gimbal too?
Yup! I use it on the ronin s with the ssd on the camera and an external power source (put the v-mount on the bottom of the gimbal) but you need to remove some parts for it to balance properly
Brian! Mate, great job! I've watched this video of yours for more than 10 times haha! It inspired me so much to build my own rig so, thank you! Problem is: I am using a Sony a6300 with manual/no IS lenses. Do you think the weight of the rig would be able to stabilize the lenses somehow? and would I be able to get a smooth shot while running with a wide angle lens on it?
I think you would be fine with some steady hands! My favorite lens doesn't have IS and neither does the BMPCC 4K and I have done some running shots with it, it won't be smooth handheld but it is definitely usable if that is the look you are going for!
Just received my pocket cinema, have taken it out for a few test runs and I really like your rig setup. Quick question, have you attached any follow focus gear to that particular setup? Any recommendations? Thanks for the video.
Hak focus my bad for not covering that! I just put it on there with two Allen screws that came with the rod holder, can message you a pick if you want to see it!
Hak focus my bad for not covering that! I just put it on there with two Allen screws that came with the rod holder, can message you a picture if you want to see it!
May I ask why you do not position the battery flat and under hang on the rods? Re-position the rail block more center and horizontal(if this is Smallrig rail block the holes should allow for this). This will keep the monitor on the camera clear for menu access. Nice rig. Thanks.
Personal preference! I like the way the rig is balanced in this setup but it is modular so you can do whatever really! Menu access isn't too bad at all for me with the battery and inch or two from the screen.
Awesome rig brotha! I was considering a BMPCC4K - just haven't committed to it yet. I'm debating if I just want to save the 6K for a URSA MINI PRO or G2. I'm definitely going to get a cinema camera - but need to make sure it fits the budget when I do lol
Thank you! I don't think you can go wrong with any of those options! The Blackmagic color science on all of those cameras is nothing short of amazing to work with and grade. :) If you get the G2 that will be next level man. And you likely won't have to spend as much to rig it out as the BMPCC 4K. But you also can't go wrong with this little guy. You're gonna be in a winning situation no matter what route you go!
If the size of ursa isn't an issue get ursa but if you're going to be travelling a lot and working in small tight spaces and doing lots of handheld work get pocket. The pocket price mounts up when you start adding necessary accessories
Hey! There are some stellar deals on the URSA mini 4.6K and even the Pro G1 (which I own, along with the Pocket) and I have to say, I would go with the larger sensor URSA over the Pocket. You can rig out a Pocket for (fairly) cheap but the image is really superior out of the URSA!
Man great video! I’m trying to build a rig as simples as possible but that allows me to transfer from handheld to shoulder rig and tripod, and I think this might do it. Why not juice the monitor from the v mount battery? And are you planning on getting a speedbooster?
Joao Porfirio heyo! I’m glad I can possibly help! As for powering the monitor that is an excellent call for and can be done for about the same price as the batteries with a dummy battery + Dtap splitter. I just chose to do it like this to cut down on cables as much as possible. Speedbooster one day in the future! But I recently upgraded from a Lumix G7 so all my lenses are micro four thirds anyways 😁

Brian! Holy shit! It's Jake! Dude I just got a BMPCC4K and have been looking into how to get a v mount and came across your channel! I'm starting to work on rigging mine out. Just sold my GH5S for this bad boy and am so excited.
No way! stoked for you Jake that is awesome news, I'll stay updated on your work and everything. :)
Bro.. Super short and crisp video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
This video right here, got be subbed. I am in preparations for my BMPCC4K.
Great rig!
Woo woo! thank you, stoked for you to shoot with it
This video made me an immediate subscriber to your channel.
How did you power it for it to die
I was using the battery that came with it. Used it for about 4/5 times and it just collapsed on me. Wouldn’t turn back on to work.
Hey man! I'm sorry to hear that happened, that sucks. I'll cross my fingers you get a good one this time! I'm glad you liked it! :)
Thank you for sharing. Really nice set up! I love my Pocket 4K!
Kevin Helmer thanks for letting me know! I hear you, It’s a fantastic piece of gear😎
Cheers
That is a sweet piece, I'll check it out thanks!
Amazing Video. Clear and to the point! Thank you!!!!
You're very welcome!
This was a beautiful video! Thank you for sharing your rig. I've been looking around, trying to find the best option for my own Blackmagic and you've inspired me greatly. Much appreciated :)
You're very welcome! Cheers
Wonderfull video! How come not more people have subscribed!? I agree that the 25mm is a must for MFT, the first lense i bought for my Lumix G85! So cheap and so wonderfull! Can't wait to finally be able to buy the BMPCC 4k and rig it out just like this!
Thanks you sir! Glad you liked it. & that lens is an absolute masterpiece for the price!
@@brian.durkee could not agree more! You got a new subrscriber in me so keep up your awesome content :)!
MINE CAME IN THE MAIL LAST NIGHT I LOVE IT!
Yessir! Stoked to hear it! :)
Brian Durkee damn it I truly wish b raw is editable in premierev
TheHitBrainiac I hear you! There is a plug-in that lets you edit braw! But tbh the more I shoot in prores the more I fall in love with it. It’s crazy flexible and super smooth to edit and scrub with
Brian Durkee I haven’t had any bad scrubbing shooting raw so far but the files are software is for windows only so far. I hope to see it soon for Mac eventually I’m sure I’ll end up doing pro res and stick to Premiere I’m giving Davinci a go plus it was free
Really loved this video man!
Thanks Coty! Glad you liked!
Wow! Nice rig, man.
Subscribed.
Woo woo! Thanks.
Yo this rig is a beast I bought everything and put it together man this is amazing. Time to get the shoulder rig.
So stoked you like it! Parts are still holding up after a year and a half of heavy use
Nice video, Brian! I'm currently building my rig now. Your video is to the point and very effective! Will be piecing mine together just like yours!
Thanks for the kind words! You'll love the rig
Thank you dude! This was perfect and to the point. Veryyyyy Solid rig ill be building.
My pleasure!!
Thanks for clearing the path walking ahead buddy. Impatiently awaiting my own bmpcc! Thanks.
Woo woo! Is it coming soon?
@@brian.durkee july last probably.
Love your work bro. Sick little set up there. Keep it up
Hamish Cross thanks man! Just checked out wingin it. AWESOME
@@brian.durkee hahaha classic. That was ten years ago crazy times. Keep pumping out these vids man, They are great. Whats you IG?
I love this man. No BS. Sub earned!
Woo woo time to celebrate!
LOVE this setup dude! Really gotta slim down my rig - it's a bit all over the place right now. Gonna pick up a few things here and there from this setup. Subbed!
Jackson Hayes I’m happy you liked the video and maybe picked up a thing or two!! Cheers. :)
strong and powerful set.
You earned a subscribe off of that. Preciate the content brother, needed advice on how to build this setup and you nailed it.
Woo! Glad you found some useful info in it. :)
This video was helpful for me. Thank you so much.
Most attractive youtuber of all time award goes to this guy lemme tell ya
Gabe you are king
Thanks for the post man ! I pretty much followed your exsact build , Tether Tools opened a supplier in the UK , V-MOUNT is excellent quality , went with a SmallHD 701 as I already owned one . Great vid and great camera , cheers
That is awesome to hear! It really is a killer battery option even though they are a newer company, happy shooting!
Brian Durkee do you have issues accessing the screen to change settings when recording?
NEVER GIVE UP MY BROTHER
YOU TOO ALWAYS KEEP IT GOING
Really clean rig, thanks for a great video.
Thanks Marie! Clean was the goal.
Men you win a greats subs now here! My new teacher
Thanks man!
Thank u dude for answering my questions
Any time!
Great setup! I'm considering picking up the camera myself. Nice job on the physics lesson haha. We actually took some engineering classes together at the U of U. I knew I recognized your face when the video came up haha.
Haha no way! that's killer, learned that Free Body Diagram from Dr. Devries :) are you getting into filmmaking?
If you didn’t, what are the settings you use for the audio to come from the rode?
did not! Rode on 0db gain and then normally 50% gain in left channel and 70% gain in right channel on the camera
Excellent job! Love the way you have that camera nailed down...
Thanks man! It's a fun rig to shoot with for sure
My dream setup. Practical and hassle free. Thanks for sharing. Subbed!
I'll probably go for this by end of this year.
I'm stoked to hear that! Thanks! excited to see what you shoot with it
Nice and clean. Great job👍
Thanks Allan!
that video made my day bro, subbed for sure.
That's awesome, thanks man!
this is really cool setup . i can shoot almost everything hand held with it .
Absolutely! thanks
Heavy cam, happy handheld! Good point!
Súper to the point, super useful. Subbed
Woo woo, killer combo (Sigma Canon) in terms of focal range and aperture. Go for it!
Yo! Cheers man, I grabbed everything on the list minus a few. Very helpful!
So stoked you're welcome Jesse!
Nice affordable rig mate. Great selection of parts for someone who's just starting. Merci!
de rien
What’s the lens u have on it now in video
Was a Rokinon!
Found it very bottom of your notes … great gear
That really helps ! Great demonstration . Thank you.
No problem!
Just received my pocket cinema, have taken it out for a few test runs and I really like your rig setup. Quick question, have you attached any follow focus gear to that particular setup? Any recommendations? Thanks for the video.
I haven't as my lenses are focus by wire so I prefer just focusing on the actual lens. But it would be super easy to attach one here.
@@brian.durkee Cool thanks!
Detailed and precised bro, working in building mine for those awsome handhelds.
Thx mate.
Thanks for the kind words! Let me know how it works out for you as you build it. :)
@@brian.durkee sure, but also we missed how u mounted the 15mm Holders on the v mount plate
15mm rod holders on the v mount thingie
Hak focus my bad for not covering that! I just put it on there with two Allen screws that came with the rod holder, can message you a pick if you want to see it!

Very helpful video. Just wondering about the lenses. How much would this set up cost with those three lenses included? Roughly.
With prices changing over time not too sure but I put in an estimate of costs at the end of the video :)
OMG that rig is baller!
Woof thanks Dustin!
