Upgrading warehouses is not a pro-tip if you're in an alliance. If you're not in an alliance, you're doomed to not really growing anyway so the rest of the advice is moot. So first pro-tip is to JOIN AN ALLIANCE. Better rewards, a help mechanic, rallies against stronger enemies (with better rewards), alliance events with great rewards, helpful people, you will barely get attacked. If you're not in an alliance you're fair game for everybody on the server. I do agree that you want to focus on a few heroes. Monica, Mason, Kimberly, Murphy, and Violet/Scarlet are great heroes that will take you far. You can replace a couple of them later. Build squads around one archetype. Full squad of tanks. Full squad of aircraft. Full squad of missile. You get bonuses to attack and take less damage from the rock-paper-scissor mechanic involved with those three types (tank>missile>air>tank). Again, agree with the plan your development around events. The Arms Race being the bread and butter of pacing your development to get awesome rewards for little effort. Develop your economy. Resources become strained the further you go, so having a good backbone of an economy helps. This includes keeping up with upgrading your resource buildings, researching tech that increases your output and unlocks more resource buildings, and tech that makes things cheaper, and hopefully your alliance cares more about development than war in the beginning. On the same vein, don't open your resources chests "manually". Just leave them in your inventory until you need them to develop something. A lot of those chests are based on your HQ level. So if you keep opening them early you're losing out on an investment of sorts. Don't craft anything but legendary gear. You'll get other gear fairly easily. Legendary will not come easy or at all unless you're top dog. Only keep gear for as many heroes as you're using. Dismantle everything else. Always have a 24-hour shield ready to use. You'll see why as your server comes along.
