It's one thing to see that rink on TV, it's another to see it the flesh. Wow. One thing that intrigues me about the tournament is how they choose the teams. I remember the Rochester Americans playing in it one year.
@@RobertGreeley in the last years it was always Team Canada and HC Davos, and then usually another Swiss team and a Czech/Finnish/Swedish or Russian team. But sometimes there are also other teams - like a North American franchise or Team Switzerland or even Team Japan.
The roster of 6 teams has changed with time obviously. But in the last decade or so, it has mostly been: - HC Davos obviously - A second Swiss team (not mandatory, but most years, especially lately) - Team Canada (a team of the best Canadian players of the Swiss league)... always invited! - A German team... because there are so many German tourists in Davos... not because they are so good (although the Straubing Tigers made it this year to the final... but lost to HC Fribourg... oops.... am I spoiling?) - 1-2 team(s) from Eastern Europe. (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia... before 2022) - 1-2 teams for Scandinavia (Sweden or Finland or both) - 1 (very) occasional wild card (US (AHL), Latvian, French, Italian team...) As far as I know, the choice of the roster is totally up to the discretion of the Cup's organizing committee. I may be mistaken, but I do not think there are any set rule on that choice... just traditions.
Hey Robert. Nice video and you've shown some interesting facts. Would love to see you doing some reports about teams and games in the regular National League or even Swiss League (2nd tier) in Switzerland. Especially around the Christmas and Spengler cup break there are some rounds of league hockey with great attendances. In my opinion, the league games (especially the rivalry games) come with a much better atmosphere than Spengler cup, less commercialized surroundings and lower prices than Spengler cup. There are many teams of small villages / towns in the league that attract large crowds compared to the size of the town and provide superb hockey experiences. Must watches: The Ticino derbies between Ambri and Lugano (imo nr 1 in hockey atmosphere in Europe), or the 'Gottardo derbies' between Ambri and Zug. Derbies of the teams from the canton of Bern/Fribourg (Bern, Langnau, Biel-Bienne, Fribourg) or the Zurich area derbies (Lions, Kloten, Rapperswil) usually come with a great atmosphere. Also Lausanne, Geneva, Ajoie or 2nd tier teams are fun to watch. Also: Bit unfortunate that the Canadian Dollar is low at the moment. Makes it a bit hard for your likes here of course. But I can promise you that a Cappucino usually is less 11 Canadian $. 😀
Robert as a Canadian I am truly jealous of you, I was just telling my wife that is one tournament I really want to do cause of the history of it and where it is located. Congrats and thanks for giving me an insight on the other side than just watching it on tv!! 💚💚💚🇨🇦
i'm swiss and don't like ice hockey and don't understand anything about it. but because of this video i now "like" it and will watch a hockey game in future. unbelievable that a video could change my mind like this haha. thanks and very great video.
Oh man, I am happy that youtube proposed me your video. I am hockey fan from Europe and as a hobby I do similar hockey trips as you do. Great content! PS. I saw you've been to Czechia, but if you want to go there again, I recomend Trinec. The arena and entertainment there are very close to NHL experience, I am very curious what would be your take on game in this building.
1:49 those Edelweiss shirts are an iconic symbol of Swiss heritage. Originally crafted from linen or wool, they were adorned with edelweiss patterns to signify regional identity. Today, they are a prominent feature of Swiss folklore, proudly representing cultural traditions and national pride.
Went to the tournament a few years ago... Bucket list event.... Actually did it cheap, public transit, cheap airbnb, never eaching out and just gettint cheap food from the grocery store
Switzerland is expensive to be sure. And Davos is among the most expensive resorts in Switzerland. BUT... Have you tried Vail or Aspen? A week skiing there will cost you double than the same week in Davos! And no way there to mix a day skiing with a game of the most ancient hockey tournament in the world!
Dude dont go to davos in when spenglercup is on. The prices go up, just because its spengler cup. Go to a regular national league game and look for an airbnb. It goes much cheeper.
35franks for a standing ticket is a bit expensive, but the rest is ok, these are normal prices in mid europe. a standing ticket in frankfurt kosts around 18€
By all accounts, a team based in a 10,000 people town should not be able to play in the top Swiss league, let alone be one of its most succesful. But it's the spengler cup that keeps them afloat: the tournament earns the team a lot of revenue which can be used in the league to compete.
Well yeah... It can be surprising to find such a good professional team in what is an overgrown mountain village. But hockey is sacrosanct in Davos. The AVERAGE regular season attendance (excluding Spengler Cup) was 4978! That's nearly 50% of the total town population! Obviously, spectators are also coming from the nearby villages, but it still is pretty much an unmatched attendance vs the size of the fan "basin" for any professional team!
@@RobertGreeley There are 52 games in the regular Swiss ice hockey season... plus play-offs for the teams which qualify, + National Cup (separate from the championship) + European cup
sorry, what does the size of a village has to do in which league the team can play? 🤦🏽 the fan culture in Switzerland is pretty big. there are even fans from central Switzerland traveling to Davos to support the team. since everyrhing is kind of close, you can easy do some 3h day trips. imo, if the arena is filled up for the season, why should Davos need other income than other clubs? doesn't make sense. maybe you can clarify?
Spengler Cup is definitely on my bucket list. sounds like im gonna need to save up till retirement to go though lol. Thank you for making this awesome insight video Robert!
as an Ice hockey fan AND a Football fan who supports the oldest footbal club Sheffield Wednesday and the most successful team in the UK Sheffield Steelers AND living in Switzerland. there are NO better fans in ice hockey than those in Switzerland, it is a shame that this year Ambri Piotta wasnt int he event as you would have experience something no other club in the world can compete with for fans dedication and passion or singing. i just found the channel today as of posting this and if you want to come again let me know and we can sort something out. my son plays Junior here for EHC Biel Bienne so we are 100% a hockey family, i will help sort you out a car i have a spare so we get your cost down to enjoy more. i run a motorbike tours business in summer for something to do while winter is not on. and no thats not a plug as i charge nothing for what i do i just show people around on the bikes as im out riding all summer anyway if you need anything let me know
Great video i just discovered your channel with the Toronto video challenge and then i saw you were in Straubing last season with Nick Mattinen i had no idea. And now you are Straubing Tigers VIP reporter thats so cool :-) Oh and by the way i played for Straubing Junior hockey and had one season with Straubing 's pro team OK mostly on the bench but had a few shifts here and there in 13 games in 1989 so yes i am a Tiger 🐅 too. Looking forward to more videos!
As an idea for the next trip: Dresden Eislowen, team the great atmosphere and always with soldouts, even in DEL2. Last year they escaped relegation to regionalliga, this season they are on their way to be promoted to DEL (and the city of Dresden itself is always charming)
The Spengler Cup is really important for HC Davos finance. The annual budget of HC Davos is 29 mio CHF (31 mio USD). Davos earns around 11 mio CHF (12.1 mio USD) with the Spengler Cup. It's around 1/3 of their annual budget. The tournament is really popular. It's a also a nice period for holidays and Davos is located in the Alps, which is nice for Winter holidays. That's the reason everyrhing is so expensive. Don't forget there is also the WEC (World Economic Forum) in Davos in January. Donald Trump already came to Davos when he was president. I don't know if he is planning to come again in Davos. That's another reason why the price are so expensive in Davos at the moment.
It's not a "wood finish" 😀 The roof is completly built out of wood as the static material 😎 Kinda cool stuff, wood is returning more and more into bigger swiss constructions. Cool Report Mate 🤗 Ey, and the fondue fauxpas happens to everybody 😂
I guess the renta car set you back more than the train would have done. Prices are aound 100 CAD both ways from Zurich. Since I am not a tourist here, I am not eligible, but I think there are tourist fares avaiable.. You have to change trains because of a gauge change up to Davos, but other than that, Swiss trains run pretty smoothly. But from my own experience, I know that getting around by train is not really a thing in Canada 🙂
For sure, I take the trains whenever I'm in Europe if I can but with 4 bags of equipment for this trip plus needed to come and go at specific times it just made more sense to go for the rental car!
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
I'm assuming you flew Business coming here from the Canada. $7000 seems a bit much otherwise. And yeah I know it's expensive here, but not that expensive lol
i think if you would have coosen a normal game it would be much cheaper than going to a spenglercup game because those tickets are on fire. so if you want you can spend less money and still have a wonderful time ther you just have to know how
it's expensive, also because of the exchange rate. when i was in the US in 2001, a dollar cost 1.8 sfr. today it's half the price. so it's twice as expensive for you now
Ironically there is no federal minimum wage in Switzerland. Some of the regions or “cantons” have a minimum wage. And yeah the average salary is pretty high.
Obviously yes! I am reasonably sure that they would be most welcome! But given the NHL schedule, try successfully inviting one! Good luck! Be aware that the Spengler Cup is physically very demanding (up to 5 games in 6 days)... add to this 2 transatlantic flights...! But AHL teams have taken part in the Spengler Cup, and a US selection has even won the Cup back in 1988.
Technically, yes but it would be nearly impossible to schedule unless an official partnership is formed with the Spengler and the NHL to pause league play to send a team over
Wait a minute, I think that's my AHL teams arena, and that is most expensive? I just thought it looked so cool being made out of wood instead of the typical steel.
For me as a swiss person icehockey will be always a mysterium. Wy such a small country have such a top league in a sport. In other sports we are sclaled more realistic to our size and potencial. In the famous lockiut season it felt we had the best league in the world. 😂😂
@ it was glorious but at the same time balanced, because each team had a cap of 3 non swiss players. So each team had a chance to convince a player to come play for them.
How do you keep your phone working in Switzerland? When I was in Sweden last November, I tried to get a SIM but was told I needed to have a Swedish bank acct to activate it. I went directly to the shop and they told me I had to come back on Monday because it requires special activation for non-Swedes. It was asinine. I ended up just suffering through hoping each place I needed to use the phone had reliable WiFi.
@@hattorihanzo2275 I just have a phone plane that charges me $15/day for the roaming. I could do like an eSIM for cheaper but I always need more than say 7gb for a whole trip doing social media work so by the time I buy all the additional data it works out to be the same price.
@@RobertGreeley Me too, but back then the € was worth 1.50 CHF.... But still, I know the prices in restaurants in Switzerland are very high. If you calculate in how long you have to work as a waiter with a Swiss salary to afford a schnitzel, it's not looking so bad though.
The land that take pride in the fact that their cows are prettier then their women. 😂 But hockey has taken leaps here in the last 20 years. All thats missing is title
@RobertGreeley i'm proud that you also watch this tournament in Canada, or like you once or twice even on site. You deserve a "Danke" for even promoting it.
As a swiss I will have to tell you, you spent way to much. Next time contact me, I will get you there "very" cheap (well for swiss averages). Also, in switzerland if they stick a price on a product (like with the coffee mug) you are in the right to buy it for said price. Having to pay 30.- for 2 mugs is a rip off (instead of 10.- for 2 mugs) and the shop clerk kinda pulled a sneaky on you! Next time stay firm and only paid what was initially asked for (as per sticker/price tag).
Well, I guess that mug was much more a holder for the pens inside. And one of the pens cost 5.--, not the mug. Seems that was a misunderstanding, based on my observation.
Yeah exactly, I'm not too worried over it, plus I mean rental car rates are what they are again could have taken the train but I'd rather just be able to go on my own schedule and have a place for all my gear!
Ofc it was worth it. Once in your lifetime you need to experience hot fondue in a hot dog bread. It's impossible to eat them without burning your tongue, make a mess on your cloth with the cheese on the first bite. Now if I watch someone else eating it, all these good memories come to my mind 😂 I'm Swiss btw.
@@Vickzq Davos was always an expensive Tourist location. The fact that the Spengler Cup is located in Davos is no coincidence. It's been a winter sport Mekka for more than a century and has been a magnet for wealthy people ever since.
@@Vickzq But locals are not staying in hotels, and are not feeding themselves on arena food! Thanks God for them, BTW! The price they pay for food at the local Migros supermarket is the EXACT same as everywhere else in Switzerland.
great report, but spengler cup games are just friendly games for tourists and party people. they have no meaning. you should attend a league game which is worlds better
Have you ever attended the Spengler Cup, or even watched it on TV? Those games are not the LEAST BIT friendly... although they tend to be fairer than the normal season ones. The Cup is a most prestigious trophy. The teams are playing their very best to win it... most of them with reinforcement from other teams, as it is allowed! No player is coming to Davos for a mountain holiday!
if the games had meaning you could qualify to play in the tournament. it is invitational and completely random who plays. the teams are not even the country champions. So no they are definitely just friendly games. also the reinforcement are just ridiculous. they hire players from other teams to play for them just for the 3 games. makes no sense at all.
@@michelh9759 The teams are indeed not their country's champions. That is ON PURPOSE! Any European country's champion + 1,2 or 3 others are qualified for the European Champions Cup... which results, for many of them, to an overly busy schedule. The teams are generally selected from teams that are doing good in the PRESENT championship, but which did not qualify for the European Cup in the previous one. It is a well oiled tradition. Then, the team can reinforce themselves... sometimes very considerably so! So, if you were following the Spengler Cup, you would see no friendly game, but games of extremely high standard! If it was just friendly local games, would they have a TV audience in Canada, and in all the countries involved? You proved by your comments your very lack of knowledge of that tournament!
Um ok, what’s the point of the tournament? Is it a European championship or something ? I always thought it was for “B” grade NHL players so I don’t bother watching it. We used to call these tournaments back in juniors the “Toilet bowl” because it was a championship for losers.
The Spengler Cup is to ice hockey what the Indy 500 is to car racing, or Wimbledon to tennis. The oldest and most prestigious event of them all! IF NHL teams are not participating, it is NOT because they don't care, quite at the contrary, but because the NHL schedule is way too crowded to allow it.
It's the Spengler Cup? Doesn't need to be a Euro league championship, it is what it is - the oldest hockey tournament in the world with a lot of great history and incredible athletes who have played in it.

But in the last decade or so, it has mostly been:
- HC Davos obviously
- A second Swiss team (not mandatory, but most years, especially lately)
- Team Canada (a team of the best Canadian players of the Swiss league)... always invited!
- A German team... because there are so many German tourists in Davos... not because they are so good (although the Straubing Tigers made it this year to the final... but lost to HC Fribourg... oops.... am I spoiling?)
- 1-2 team(s) from Eastern Europe. (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia... before 2022)
- 1-2 teams for Scandinavia (Sweden or Finland or both)
- 1 (very) occasional wild card (US (AHL), Latvian, French, Italian team...)
As far as I know, the choice of the roster is totally up to the discretion of the Cup's organizing committee. I may be mistaken, but I do not think there are any set rule on that choice... just traditions.

Hc Davos my favorit swiss club since 20 years:) nice video men
Thanks for watching!
Would love to go back to Switzerland, will see what happens!
Robert as a Canadian I am truly jealous of you, I was just telling my wife that is one tournament I really want to do cause of the history of it and where it is located. Congrats and thanks for giving me an insight on the other side than just watching it on tv!! 💚💚💚🇨🇦

Went to the tournament a few years ago... Bucket list event.... Actually did it cheap, public transit, cheap airbnb, never eaching out and just gettint cheap food from the grocery store
Awesome!
Wish I had some more time to go skiing to be honest!

a standing ticket in frankfurt kosts around 18€
Ah the food definitely is more expensive than normally but Davos is expensive. Like swiss people say it's expensive so that should be expected.
That's the special price for the spengler cup. Normally a ticket for a NLA Match is 20 to 28 / 30 bucks.
no at the spengler cup it is very cheap for 35 franks an sitting ticket cost nearly 100 franks in every sector
@@pixelfreak2626 jes i mean that
Compared to the NHL I think it's an okay deal tbh
I mean don’t they have like over 30 NL championships? Spengler host or not they’ve been competing in the league for a minute
@@RobertGreeley There are 52 games in the regular Swiss ice hockey season... plus play-offs for the teams which qualify, + National Cup (separate from the championship) + European cup
sorry, what does the size of a village has to do in which league the team can play? 🤦🏽
the fan culture in Switzerland is pretty big. there are even fans from central Switzerland traveling to Davos to support the team. since everyrhing is kind of close, you can easy do some 3h day trips.
imo, if the arena is filled up for the season, why should Davos need other income than other clubs? doesn't make sense. maybe you can clarify?

Would an NHL team be eligible for the Spengler Cup?

Seems that was a misunderstanding, based on my observation.

great report, but spengler cup games are just friendly games for tourists and party people. they have no meaning. you should attend a league game which is worlds better
I’d beg to differ on they have no meaning

Wow, so much disrespect in such a short post.
Whats the point of the Nations Faceoff?
Im Sure you are the one who never could play hockey just because you are to bad. But you think you are the big expert…
