Wow ,, some really great train running there and awesome camera angles and shots. Keep up the good work and gr8 video there mate. Cheers from John in Australia.
+Peter Shaw Hi Peter :) well I am indeed pleased to have introduced you both to them! A google search for BR class 15 / 16 will bring up a lot of info. Nice little locos
+MikesMovies My trainspotting days finished when I left school in 1963 ( gulp ) and diesels didn't seem to interest me then , since retiring model railways has been a new hobby and anything associated with trains is of great interest to me. Thanks again for sharing videos like this . Cheers......Peter .
+TornadoSteam81 Hi Phil, very many thanks for the kind comments! I really enjoyed finding out about them, lovely locos. Hope this video get a good few shares and views now Cheers Mike
2 very nice Loco`s Mike , now we know where the 20 came from , have not seen either of these two before , but being restricted to London maybe explains why , must say they both run smoothly , the layout is looking better all ballasted , the Mobius working good ...Dave
+David Howarth Hi Dave, many thanks, they did get away from London a bit, there is a nice photo of a 16 heading to Brighton on a special passenger train in 1960! the 15s were allowed further afield as they were less likely to fail! I do love the old classes! It's funny but the class 20s were being introduced from 1957 yet all these other classes were coming out at the same time and later! 20s must be one of the most successful locos ever!
Great video of two forgotten about locos of the steam and diesel crossover period .I too have the same models in my collection and find them to be superb in detail and great runners .I see you have a brake tender too which you ran behind the class 15 adding to the realism of the layout for that era of engines you were displaying .Great production and very informative from start to finish ,really enjoyed your video ,Gary
now look what you've done! I want one or both! Actually been thinking about getting a class15, didn't realise Heljan made a Class16. Just checking my Ian Allen, I used to 'bunk' Stratford' in the mid 60's, mostly to see the stored preserved steam locos they had there. one of my earliest railway memories was of going with my father from Stratford Low Level to North Woolwich to see a family friend and being terrified by a lone diesel sounding its horn..It must have been late 1950's early 1960's. I was used to steam engine noises as we lived by a railway line. I eventually copped all the Class 16's and 39 of the Class 15's. There must be room on my layout for one of them!
lol sorry about that. Thanks very much for the interesting history. They are great runners and will be featuring in a new video soon over on Model Railways Unlimited.
I am going to ask a question of my viewers and I'd very much like a honest reply. How many of you actually watched this video from start to finish? When making videos I work hard to include highlights all the way through to try and keep it interesting, however there is a school of thoight that says videos should be no longer than 6 mins. Please add your observations below this, thanks. Mike.
I for one would like to say I've watched the video in it's entirety. Whilst I know a bit about the Class 15 on the basis I'm involved with the group restoring it, I have recently purchased said model for my layout, and I've been looking for as many videos and pictures of the models themselves to get me excited for it's arrival. Fantastic work here chief, much appreciated from my perspective!
Hi Mike, I too have watched the video in its entirety - twice now! I found it both informative and entertaining especially as I have the same Class 15 locomotive. May I ask about the three suburban(?) coaches featured in the video, whose are they?
Yes I bought the Class 15 at £90 at a show a year later the motor went up in a puff of smoke. I contacted Gaugemaster regarding purchasing a replacement. They told me I couldn't have one as they were keeping them for warranty repairs and not selling them as spare parts. Needless to say I will not be buying any more of Heljans stuff
@@MikesMovies Yip I took the motor out and it just runs very slowly but you can smell the burnt smell. If Heljan come to model rail Scotland I am going to have words with them regarding this issue
Another enjoyable and very informative review of both class members Mike. Great to here the history behind the locos and of course the team behind the preservation of the last surviving Class 15. Will be amazing to see her back in action one day. Amazing amount of detail on both models. Especially love the spoked wheels on the 16's. Looks very smart on the passenger working. On a different note what paint did you use to weather up your track? Excellent work and thanks for sharing!
+SDJR7F88 Hi Callum, very many thanks for the support and glad you enjoyed the video. They are great locos, proper little icons :) I used Railmatch sleeper grime on the track mate. Not been able to do much of late on here, working on a massive project and have lots of work issues just now as well. Cheers
During the summer, (when their lack of train heating wasn't an issue,) they had been sighted on summer excursion trains to the south coast. The majority of their work was parcel/mail, local trip/pickup/cross-London-transfer freight, centred around their base at Stratford and Temple Mills Marshalling Yard.
@@MikesMovies Yes i did at x mas with the tree in the middle of one end, but very low yellowish light conditions. I'll do some footage of the loco going over the points and put them on the tube
Hi Mike I run coarse scale 0 gauge I have some old videos at Porthcawl and Nottage 3 rail on you tube ,must update the videos some time ! have just negotiated a lease on the small front bedroom so planning a move to there soon !!
+G S DIGITAL IMAGES Hi, many thanks, the layout has to be ready to fold up and move, when folded it does so track side to track side so I can't have anything fixed to the board, however I was wondering about a few lose buildings.
Yes, I watched it twice, in fact! I'm considering exploring some of the less popular diesel locomotives in service when I was growing up and your video is most informative. I generally model steam so this is a step into the dark side! Thank you. Is your track loose ballasted or pre-ballasted foam underlay? Either way it looks neatly done.
Thanks very much, the early diesels go well with BR steam. The track is pre ballasted foam, there is a video on my channel showing it being done, called 'all change on Mike's railway'
I took usually model SREAM but after this clip am being lured to the DARK SIDE help me these are very interesting unusual locomotives most imformative may have to get one OOOHHH I am gone ha ha ha thank you
Great video! I like to watch a video about the technology. Your video I liked. Thank you for your views my videos and comment on them. I vote Thumb up!
A perfect video. and thanks for sharing the history of these two locos. Cheers.

Hi Gary, your kind comments really made my day! I always put a lot of effort into these videos so its always great to hear they are enjoyed.
I visited Stratford shed in January 1981 to see the 2 Class 15s and also found a "Toffee Apple" Class 31 in an old shed ! Halcyon days...
1981 had an amazing trip to Liverpool Street then, so many locos. Like you say great days

Pleasure! Thank you for the info about the coaches.

Did 16s do passenger trains?

Heljan models, silent, powerfull and sound great over Triang super 4 track joints with slight picking on the crossing vee. (check rail shims needed).
