I'm going to be as fair as I can here. Tool is my favorite band, and has been for almost 3 decades. I've seen every video of theirs about 2000 times. My MMO characters are all named something Tool related (at least until i get reported for them) It's a pretty obvious inspiration at the very most charitable. If you would have told me this was a Tool video, I would have believed it instantly, no hesitation at all. That's how similar they are. It isn't just that it is stop motion, but the general decrepit scenery, the rusty screws, the creatures with unfinished or undressed limbs, the quick flashing objects moving around... It isn't Identical, in a literal sense, but wow. I had no idea this existed until just now. They even used the creepy baby heads in Prison Sex. It's so thematic and aesthetically similar. It hurts me to say this, but they are right. It's close enough to warrant credit. Adam still created something wonderfully dark, and he definitely put an aura of intention behind the animation itself that makes it incredible. The slick black hand pushing the doll down and caressing it as it thrashed is pure genius. The box that the puppet digs up and opens right before blacking out was powerful, too. If there was NO music, those videos would still be masterpieces. The fact that they line up so well with the music AND the lyrics makes it almost indescribably perfect. The Sober video looks like it sounds, if that makes sense. You can see the frayed distortion and whining feedback. You can hear the puppet's misery and wailing depression in Maynard's voice. The frantic search for relief, and the sickness that prompted it, is heard in every tempo change. I would still enjoy it if they had stolen the whole thing shot for shot, which they didnt do. Even so, there is no way to deny the similarities. We aren't talking about "Hey, I used those same 4 chords in my song!" here. Lots of songs have the same chords, so we tend to judge similarities using more narrow criteria. "They stole that drum beat" or "They stole that guitar riff" The Quay brothers created a unique vision, so Adam couldn't have gotten their style and atmosphere anywhere else. There is a direct line from the Quay Brothers to Tool, so it wasnt like it was already popular. It is definitely close enough to deserve being credited. Maybe they already credited the Quay Brothers and we just don't see it.
I just imagine their films as existing in some surreal other world like a dark fairytale populated by living puppets with a mixture of childish and ambiguous morals
Rewiring you brain. But what would you call it before wires existed? Or a hundred years from now? The liquid form of syntax? Just what is going on under your bed?
I'm here cause Tool and Kurt Cobain.

Don't these pre-date tool?
KingoftheCatnap yea they do tool ripped them of bastards
Yes of course they do and I loved them way before tool and kurt .
So no one else can use 'stop-motion' animation?
@@joerevere937 People don't understand the term 'inspiration' or 'homage' these days anymore, everything is a ripoff of something.
When did this come out?
It's Sesame Street but for the advanced placement kids.
Brothers Quay + LSD = A stimulated mind or a very bad tripp
I like this idea. Either way the mind is stimulated
I'm not seeing how Tool stole anything. The only similarity is they're both stop motion.
Keith Gabbard And you probably think Tools latest album is a masterpiece.
Yeah in all fairness at best one could say tools video was inspired by it maybe tons of peoples art are inspired by others
@@jjwest1272 it is.
It was a statement made in the 90's. Standards were higher then than they are now.

Let's all pretend to get it. I like to think I'm out there, but not out there
There's not much to "get". It's nonsense and it will make you dumber, drugs or not.
I just imagine their films as existing in some surreal other world like a dark fairytale populated by living puppets with a mixture of childish and ambiguous morals
Where is the song from?
Well, you have a fancy blue background....
Piss off cobain. Act like he’s some great innovator. Everyone is inspired by what’s come before.
