  • In this video I take flight from Shoreham (Brighton City Airport) towards London, going Clockwise around Gatwick's Airspace and take in the views. After not having flown for a couple weeks it was nice to get back in the air and dust a couple things off.

I was always taught to look into the opposite direction of the turn before doing so, then look into the turn. I did this both in power flying and gliding, I think too your scan outside could be better as your eyes are darting about outside but most of your gaze is inside, so with the darting gaze you won’t notice far away objects moving fast. The best way is to fix gaze for a second or two ahead and wait to you’ve scanned than position then move to next point.

I do that too, same way that I was taught, look the opposite way first, then ahead, then in to the turn. I look a lot more than the videos really let on, as each clip is only short and the angle of the Go Pro with the fisheye takes a way a lot of how much things such as my head is actually moving. But yes, I could probably fix my gaze a bit more when doing lookouts. Thank you for watching and the comment :)

Nice loop around ! I'll probably visit Shoreham shortly. Currently doing my PPL at Biggin .. shame landing fees are super high to visit because its a great airport

@@martindesca it really is a shame that Biggin Hill has decided to focus on the Private Industry. Definitely visit Shoreham, such a lovely airfield and the ATC are great and friendly.
      Good luck with your PPL!

Hello. Im currently doing my navigation flying and would like to record my audio. I have a 3.5 audio cable but when I talk its extremely loud. What do you use?

I use my Go Pro to record my video and audio and I have it connected to a "NFlightCam Audio Cable" which is plugged in to one of my audio plugs in the plane.
Good luck with the Nav Flying!

Interesting series of videos. As ex ATC I find them very interesting, and am considering doing my PPL myself, hopefully next year. Keep them coming, and happy flying!

Where did you work at ATC? Always admire ATC, never get to switch off!

@@OutboundDiaries Hi, I was at the London Air Traffic Centre at West Drayton initially from 1982, then moved down to Swanwick and Whiteley when West Drayton closed in 2007, as a radar software engineer and Radar data analysis, for crash investigations, noise complaints, etc.

Amazing you've done your ppl in just 7 months. You look like you've been flying for years.

Enjoyed the lovely views. Could you fly to Scotland on one tank of petrol?

Thank you, the views are always lovely in the air. Yes you could do, BIRT has a range of around 800 miles with full tanks, so can get decently far without needing to refuel!

Take time to have a flight around Bodium castle in East Sussex, beautiful views there and no ATC conflict with Gatwick

Thank you for sharing this. I learned to fly at Shoerham in the 1970's, your flight brought back lots of memories. One of my flight instructors was none other than Mike Bannister - Concorde chief pilot. All my flying is now x-plane 11!

It's a lovely airport to fly out from. Beautiful views as soon as the wheels leave the ground. Must've been cool to be taught by a Concorde Pilot! Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching :)
