Ideally, this should be combined into the new expanded and converted Sheppard Line as a light automated frequent metro for a small incremental increase in cost. This reduces transfers, increases speed, increases frequency and provides redundancy in its own right-of-way and elevated in some areas. Cheers.
They fucked up line 5 so bad that they can't use the same stock of trains for this extension. I'm not sure exactly what the reasons are but I remember reading a few years ago that because of the way line 5 is constructed they cannot build the extension according to the Eg East LRT specifications
@@scouttdavidsonthe main issue is the layout of Kennedy station. The line 2 extension would physically get in the way if they were to extend line 5 through Kennedy. Unfathomable basic planning failure
This was cancelled by Rob Ford. Now I will likely be too dead to use it. It still leaves people north of Lawrence on Galloway in the cold. Better put a Galloway Road bus from Lawrence subway station.
It was cancelled by Rob Ford in 2010- but like a lot of transit projects in Toronto, it came back from the dead. The city held public consultations in June of this year. You can search it on the Toronto website. Lets see what the city will do now though...
The good news is that Ford does not care about Scarborough so he will not demand that this all be tunnelled. We can build it as fast as the line 6 (Finch LRT). Also as Kennedy through Ellesmere already has Bus dedicated lanes the infrastructure just needs to be rearranged not completely redone, aka remove the bus lanes, move traffic to the outer lanes build the LRT in the inner lanes. Also much of Sheppard is built so it can be expanded. The only trouble spots will be the Morningside 401 overpass through to Sheppard and the bridge at Gatesforth. Let us hope that they keep costs down and just build it right the first time.
Cost. An above-ground subway/heavy-rail line would be more expensive than a light-rail/LRT line. Hopefully - one day - we can have walkthrough LRTs, similar to Line 1.
Wouldn’t it be easier to extend the Sheppard Line to Port Union to the east and to Sheppard & Jane to the west? As well as for Eglinton East, Kingston Road & Morningside Avenue, just have frequent express busses on those streets because making a new LRT line will take way too long and will make Kingston Road a nightmare to drive on as it is a direct on-ramp to 401 after Morningside. Morningside is already reduced to one lane between Lawrence and Ellesmere so you might as well have frequent express busses running on those routes to have efficient service in the area. Plus, Eglinton & McCowan-Kingston/Morningside already has a bus lane so you might as well make that corridor have frequent express busses too. Making this LRT will be absolutely pointless and costly, not mention the amount of time it will take to build considering how long the Eglinton Crosstown has been taking. It makes no sense to make this LRT line as it will definitely be a complete disaster. Just extend the Sheppard Subway both ways to Jane out west & Port Union further east to make it an actual Subway and keep the remaining streets the way they are and just increase the frequency of express busses on those streets.
Tunnelling is always more expensive and demanding than on-surface transit. But I agree, building a subway towards Jane and somewhere in Port Credit would be ideal because of the numerous advantages of a subway compared to a surface LRT. The city is currently in discussion on how to move forward with the Sheppard subway so let's see how it all plays out
If you search “Eglinton East Light Rail Transit” in Google and go to the first ‘City of Toronto’ link, it’ll give you a lot of information about the project. Cheers
to be completed in 2086
I'm hoping with 3 LRT's under their belt, Metrolinx will somehow build this line on time and on par with budget 🤣
@@SixLayers - I watched their clown show on St Clair and now along Eglinton - they will never learn
sucks that I wont be alive to see this completed

totally agree, a subway would be faster and make less disruptions with surface transport
On second thought I might be dead before the Eglinton LRT from Kennedy opens.
Wouldn't it make more sense to extend line 5 along the route of line 7? That way commuters have less transfers.

1,000% correct.

I'll be dead once this is done, and I'm a kid.
Just make it a streetcar line and have it like st clair with separate tracks and right of way.
Why doesn't this city create subway lines that are above the street like NYC ?

Well, you gonna need to open the Eglinton one before you start talking about anything else 😂😂😂
I know eh, this project exists only in dreams as of now haha
