Some people don't realize that you have to loosen the knob in the center of the handwheel, in order to disengage the clutch, when you are winding the bobbin, so the needle won't go up & down, while you are filling the bobbin. I appreciate you showing the importance of that play in the handwheel, when that knob is loosened, & to tighten it, when you want to power the entire machine again, after you have finished winding the bobbin. The little screw in the knob, is what controls the play between winding the bobbin, & when it is tightened against the lock washer, it allows the entire machine to sew.

Thank you excellent presentation. I like how you are frugal with your words, no blah blah. Mine is very noisy but the sound seems to come from the bobbin case area and I can need feel it with the wheel by hand. Will clean and oil and see from there can't even turn the wheel to wind a bobbin so this helped me with the wheel washers etc also. It is new to me.Thanks again

I just came across the machine. It’s really powerful. I’m trying to learn all I can. I didn’t realize it had a rubber pulley inside. Thanks for the info!

Thank you for such a complete video. I inherited a 1960 model in 1968, used it a bit over the years, and then left it sitting. Now in 2018 it has the flat spot, due to sitting unused for so long.

I have one of these kick butt sewing machines! I use it to sew leather and very heavy canvas for military vehicle upholstery. It eats it up!
I like this Elna better than my Pfaff 150 ! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

the newer machines are useless for sewing even denim. I have used my Elna SU Supermatic Star 62C to sew all sorts of things even weed mat. I clean it well afterwards.

I love these old machines. Built like a Soviet battle tank and just as heavy. And just as noisy when the friction wheel gets a flat side.

Thank you so much kind sir. I am a gal who loves and has started to collect these old workhorse and most alluring sewing machines. You helped me with the most essential issue..taking off the hand wheel. I akin it to knowing how to turn an apparatus on before you can even hope to discover its mysteries. With your information I will attempt to replace my pulley. It too, still has a flat spot, even though I have been running it with gusto in the hopes of evening out the culprit. Great information, nicely presented and very much appreciated. By the way such a great calming delivery too, a pleasure to watch. One last note, I generally view" how to" videos on fast speed, yours is watched as intended.

Thank you a lot. I got the idea how transmission works by watching your video. Now I can figure out what is wrong in my Elna, it only needs a new rubber wheel. This video saved me to tear down whole machine :) Thanks!!!

I've just got free 1957 Elna Supermatic machine. Machine is in very good condition. No scratches and she must be used for short time. But got same problem, slight flat on rubber pulley. Didn't even try to find replacement part. I've got different idea. Since rubber pulley looks strong and with lots of material to go, I decided to grind some rubber with piece of disk grinder sandpaper . I've run motor fast and get rid of flat spot. After assembly back , machine is working good.

Thank you ! One word of caution though: You never want to run the machine with the foot pressed down without a cloth under de foot. You'll end up marking it and make it useless.

Do you have access to replacement parts...I have a Elna Supermatic 1959. Replaced the rubber pulley but somewhere in all that the concave washer and snapring have gone missing in action. Any chance you have these parts? Thanks so much for the video - the info was extremely helpful.

This is the best video. I have been working on my Edna for about 4-5 hours. Finally decided to get some visual aid on the internet. Thanks to you, I have now assembled my machine correctly. The problem still exists though. I took apart the flywheel mechanism because the bobbin winder doesn't go round and round anymore. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

You can rent the tool from White Sewing Center, or at least you used to be able to. This would be a much better option than hammering on the shaft of a motor. They also used to sell the replacement friction wheels, but currently their web page says that they can't get good quality parts any more.

Edward Falk you are correct. The recent shippments on the pulley, only a few are good. Some people are resorting to replacing with 3D printed plastic pulleys with Rubber O rings on them. They seem to ve working well.

Your Supermatic looks like it has been sitting unused, almost since it was brand new! That is the only way the pulley gets the flat spot, but also, your pulley had almost no wear! I forgot to mention, the flat spot is caused by the rubber friction pulley sitting in the exact same position for decades, particularly through heat & cold cycles, pressed hard up against the handwheel. Depending on which year the machine was made, there can be varying amounts of pressure, that pushes the pulley against the metal, which is what causes the flat spot. The flat space is not caused by being rubbed against anything, if the machine had been used, the pulley would have stayed more even, because every time you stop sewing, it would stop with a different part of the pulley, pushed against the metal handwheel.
The bits of rubber fragments down inside the machine, can be from either fabric lint, or the friction pulley does lose some rubber over time, when it is being used. I guess you could compare it to the way a pencil eraser loses some of its' rubber, every time you use it. You are using friction, when you use a rubber eraser, to erase the pencil marks, & pieces of the rubber wear off, as you do so. The friction pulley works on a similar principle, but it is made of much harder rubber, so it doesn't wear the rubber off nearly as quickly as the soft pencil eraser does.

HI I just got one like that dated 14 Feb 1957m a Valentines gift maybe? My 03 Zig Zag cam disengages upwards from time to time, to often, especially when I try to sew full speed, which is troublesome as I like to sew quite fast especially in straight lines zig zag edges. What do you think maybe the problem...Otherwise the machine has been well taken care of. Do you think the cam can get old. The little hole what to fit it on, seems slightly oval"ish". Could that be the issue? Should I try to find another 003 cam? The seller, a detailed person musician, told me clearly "IF" I not use the machine often, to disengage the flywheel so it will not press against the pulley. Thanks for your video I am hooked on vintage, never will get a new machine. Have Grasshopper, Rocketeer and now this Elna. They all nearly run like Rolls Royce. I was so amazed to learn that ELNA was made by an arms factory ..I guess therefore the precision. Wish I had discovered the vintage earlier in life. I am Designer and Costumier

I have a 1953 one, but instead of the pulley having a flat, it seems to have just dried up and lost quite a bit of friction.
But my main problem is that the screw locking the flywheel seems to be stuck, so I cannot get to the pulley at all!

Thank you so much for your wonderful video! I really appreciate you taking the time to make & share this information, THANK YOU! I confess, I am the one who keeps spreading the word about the site where you can rent the tool, because I hope people WILL replace the pulleys, because these machines are INCREDIBLE! It makes me sad to see these fabulous vintage machines thrown away, just because our current economy makes it cheaper to buy clothes readymade, rather than sew your own, so good machinery is wasted, not because anything is really wrong with it, but just because people can't be bothered to do a tiny maintenance job, of replacing the pulley. A lot of people don't realize that replacing the pulley, is the equivalent of replacing a belt, on other machines.
Whitesewingcenter.com is the site you can rent the pin "puller" tool. Ray White, the owner, invented these tools, apparently out of a C clamp, so you don't knock the motor out of balance, while trying to tap the pin out of the pulley. Ray also holds sewing machine repair classes around the country, teaching people how to troubleshoot, service & repair their sewing machines themselves, it is a few days long, I believe, but everyone I know who has attended, raves about it!

I am repairing the same machine I got off of ebay, I thought it was the pully 722077 but this looks new like someone already replaced it.But its still making the noise that yours is before you replaced the part, I have taken it apart to clean and oil, all is smooth feeling when I hand crank it.When I put the flywheel back on in the order that you do w all 3 washers it still makes the noise that yours does prior to the new part..... any ideas? Not my first rodeo I have fixed many of my ebay finds, including the timing on a Viking 990S {1989 model} But this has me stumped.
    Thank you
    Sueellen

    • @tumorfarmer
      @tumorfarmer 9 лет назад +2

+Sueellen Blubaugh , did you check the pulley for flat spots? Not all flat spots will be as big as the one he shows in the video, some pulleys may have a few flat spots, which are smaller, due to it being used periodically. A pulley can look brand new, but still have flat spots, just because the machine was only used for mending 3 or 4 times, over it's entire lifetime. There are some pulleys, which are off balance, even when new. I like Ray White's pulleys, because he is a machinist, & he makes sure they are balanced, before he sells them. That is why I recommend WhiteSewingCenter.com for pulley replacements, & that he rents out the tool for removing the pin safely, without knocking the motor off balance. It is possible that someone did replace the pulley on yours, & may have accidentally knocked the motor off balance. You may want to consider checking out the Wefixit group on Yahoo, or one of the vintage elna groups, for more information on these specific machines. It helps to find repair people who have more experience with these specific machines. They are definitely worth keeping up & running!
