Something that has made me a lot faster is doing the same puzzle over and over with different strategies. I started out at 1h58m I think on the air balloons puzzle you did, and by the 7th time I got it down to 58min! And I got my first sub 90 min first attempt this month, and got 2 more under 90 right after!
@@mikatu have you tried doing it? You learn strategies you can apply to similar puzzles and train your mind to look for the next piece faster. Many of the fastest puzzlers in the world use this training strategy
The sky on the third puzzle looked so fun! And I agree, for some reason anything that's yellow, brown, and black (or anything dark) is just an absolute nightmare to puzzle. I guess, if you have too much of any color... it will get hard!
Hi, Jigsaw Johnie. You are getting faster! Of course, yeah - Jazzy! Glad you enjoyed doing it. I am now doing the 500 piece "Dream Library" by Ravensburger. Enjoying it. Looking forward to next week's video.
Thank you for the comment, again! I loved it, it was a great puzzle. Will be looking for new 590 pieces to add to the collection. I'll keep an eye out for that one too!
Interesting to watch. I am also not under the 90 Minutes mark for most 1st assemblies, but the postcard ones are super fun. 2nd attempt, I get to 1:20 and below. So could I go to a competition? What do you think?
Well yes of course. At least for the experience. Some people don't finish the puzzle in the time limit in comps. So yes you should go just for the experience!
I do the same thing when it comes to sorting! I just flip them right side up and go from there. I don't like making piles of specific colors. I tried it once the other day and it seemed to help but I honestly don't have to do that all the time. I like collecting the color I want to put together when I need it - just like you. But I'm also not a speed puzzler.
Ok but sometimes on the bigger puzzles I like to sort. I use my sorting trays and just separate the pieces in the order i'll want to assemble them. takes less space on the table and it can be fun too!
Thanks for the video. I think try and sort a little more while you are flipping would help. Don't have to do all of it, but put aside things that pop out to you as you flip, just like you do with the edges. It makes smaller piles to look through later. If you just flip, you then have to touch every piece an additional extra time.
You are doing very well Johnie, just keep practising. 👍 There are always going to be jigsaws that are harder to do than others. Some would be more suited as pairs puzzles rather than individual ones. I've just finished the Ravensburger Rabbit Recital puzzle, not an easy one at all. My time was just over 3 hours but I wasn't trying to do it in any speedy fashion. I do puzzles for pleasure rather than speed and time myself just to see how long they take. You will crack the 90 minute limit one day. ⏲ Are you going to watch any of the Worlds next month? Look forward to your next video.
100% will watch. I'm excited. I don't know if I'll be able to watch live but I will watch later if I have to. I'm anxious to see ether puzzles and the action!
I started puzzling like 2 weeks ago, and I also really wanted to do a postcard puzzle, I did the NY Postcard yesterday and it was my first puzzle under 2 hours, which felt great !
I would like to see you do the Ravensburger 500 piece "Tree of Life" (Same artist that did the 1000 piece "Celestial Constellations" from USA jigsaw competition 2024). It is such a beautiful image. The tree has a great color gradient, and the background has a great pattern to help assemble.
See, that's why I like the comment section on RUclips videos. So I can get recommendations from you all. If it wasn't for the comment I would know about this puzzle. I'll look for it now. Thank you for the comment :)
Good on you trying to get your times down. I did time myself for a couple of puzzles and even did a couple of time lapses, but that is a ton of work, never mind the wrong equipment, lol. This morning I completed a tricky 1000 piece puzzle and to add insult to injury, I pulled eight 1K Shelley Davies collage puzzles off of the shelf. It is all up to the wheel as to what’s next.
Hey Johnie, you are doing great, some 500 piece puzzles are just not made for speed puzzling, some are suited to pairs speed puzzling in competitions, and some as a challenge for those who don’t have space for a 1000 piece count - you are too hard on yourself, you are doing fab.
Thank you for the nice comment. I will probably stick to the competition ones from now on. At least that way we know what to expect and I won't be discouraged
I was yelling at my screen GO GO GO on the NY postcard! Great time even if you didn't beat 90, but that day is ever so close! I do a lot of cat puzzles and animal hair is hard, even Karen Puzzles says that is hard for her. Also, she did a Zebra puzzle that just about did her in, so you are in good company I think on your assessment that those were difficult puzzles. Love your commentary on your strategy as well. Also, you should experiment with lighting on the next puzzle with a lot of dark colors and see if you improve. I think you will. People at the competitions say that they if they get to choose their table they always scout for the ones with the brighter lighting for the dark colors. So, your assessment on them is also in accordance with the "pro's". Thanks for the entertainment once again!
Well thanks for the comment too! I always like your input on the videos since you seem to watch other youtubers and you have more experience than me. It's good to know I'm not way off on these topics like the difficulty and the light. Glad you enjoyed the video! More to come...
Sign up for a competition. I loved my first one and got a PB at it. I think it's the excitement. A simple trick that helped me speed up. In your lighthouse puzzle, once you had the water done, you are filling in the bottom right side, but all your pieces are on the left side. Just slide them over so they are closer. It's easier to see what you need when both the puzzle and pieces are within your view
I have the feeling that those competitions are running puzzling for everyone. Puzzling shouldn't be about speed but taking time and enjoying. I think you did pretty well and your time is a normal time for those puzzles. Not like the times in those stupid competions with puzzles being done in 35 minutes! It takes me more time to sort the pieces than those guys to finish the whole puzzle (but that is because I am a beginner since I started 2 weeks ago). We should enjoy what we are doing and not running against the clock. Yes, we should aim to improve and get better and always time ourselves just to see the progress. But this is not about speed but having a great time with our hobby. I am happy these competitions are bringing a lot of people into puzzling, me included, but seeing people obsessed with unrealistic times instead of enjoying the process. I hate it.
You have a point! After that video it's been only casual 1000 pieces puzzling, still keeping track of time for comparison purpose but really just having fun!
For the first puzzle, don't worry, it's the same for me. When I do the easy first half in around an hour, the hard remaining half takes around two hours, all the more so with bad lighting. Sometimes, it's just incredibly hard. Sometimes, it's a combination of bad lighting and bad printing definition on the pieces which makes the colours look blurry/pixellized instead of sharp, making the process a zillion times harder.
Ohh yes exatly that. It's the older Ravensburger puzzles with the bigger box. It's like a painting, it's a bit blurry like you say. Just like my older Dragon puzzle. Less definition. Thanks for the comment!
That's a few comments I read now about that. Really thanks for sharing, good to know. I didn't know it was an issue for other puzzlers! I feel better now :)
We'll see next year.i know I should go just for the experience at least. Even if I feel I'm not fast enough to compete, it would be a great experience to meet people and live the action one time at least.
Have you been tested for colour blindness at all? Most men actually have it to some degree. It would explain why you may struggle a bit more when the pieces look really similar.
"Jazzy" would have to be my favorite out of all of these! Glad that one started to make you feel a little better about your speed puzzling times!
Not envying you on the Lions puzzle! That one looked so hard! Good job!! You finished it :)!
