This is a hike I recommend 100% A great, rocky, climb in the beginning turns into a gentle stroll across a series of ledges overlooking the surrounding mountains. Take your time and walk the length of the ridge to check out all of the ledges, it is well worth it.
Most people stop at the ledges but for the hiker wanting more you can continue along the Blue trail for an impressive 700' climb on the last mile to the summit of Panther Mountain. There is another great view at the summit and it is a fantastic place to stop for lunch (or breakfast as was the case for my hike).
From the trailhead you'll stay on the Yellow trail until you reach the junction with the Blue trail. Go left at this junction to reach the ledges and ultimately Panther Mountain.

I did same route about 2 weeks after you did. But my hike was shrouded in clouds and rained on Day 2. Camped on Giant Ledge; only one more camper. It may be Catskill-easy, but it was a moderate-to-difficult for me lol
That is awesome, I want to camp up there so bad. I could see that hike being very interesting in the clouds although the rain kind of is a bummer. That's the mountains for ya though, they dictate everything! I'm glad you got out to do this route. Be good my friend.

I thought I was going to miss it and wound up on that ledge about 10 minutes before it crept up over the mountains. Hit it just in time!
Damn Caps 4:15am? haha, nice! It does get crowded there. Really nice hike. Just what I needed to watch too. I wonder if that bear is drawn to that area due to trash from litterbugs. Great spot to have all to yourself for that sunrise. I need to get back to the Catskills soon. I just had an epic family trip for 6 days to the Whites. We did both hotel and camping. We stayed at Riverwalk Resort and then Hancock Campground for a very rainy night, was an incredible trip. Cheers, loved the vid!
HAHA, yeah this was an early one. I definitely felt it on the ride home. I was wondering the same thing about the bear. Seeing as there are campsites up there I'm sure it is in the area looking for food. I'm almost positive it was a yearling, it was fairly small. I'm familiar with Hancock, right up the road from Loon on 112. I'll be in that area at the end of August for a few days climbing some more 4,000 footers (Osceolas, Hancocks, and Carrigain). I may have to get a site there and do some camping myself. Thanks for checking the video out, it is always appreciated!
@@capsoutdoors We did the Loon Mountain Gondola which was awesome. There are trails on top and caves, also a restaurant. I was with family so we did easy things. Was an amazing trip. Hancock is great, second time I've stayed there. I also went up in June solo and stayed at Lafayette but I hated the road noise at Lafayette Campground. Hancock is the place to be.

Cool...I've always heard good things about the Catskills...now I know why! What a great area for exploration and adventure! Without a doubt this is the easiest way to decompress and center myself. I do I.T. work in a fairly demanding industry (B2B digital marketing) so I'm always surrounded by stress. Having time like this to, as you said, reflect is so important which is why I usually start my hikes before the Sun is up. I have a feeling you will have a great time on this trail if you decide to give it a go. Thank you and I hope the rest of your week is good as well.

I've been living in N.Y. now for about 4 years (near Syracuse) and have been wanting to get more into hiking/backpacking/primitive camping. Just a quick question! Are you ever allowed to camp on DEC land that doesn't have a specific campsite marker? I've been using the DEC info locator and notice there are tons of places with trails/parking but not all have designated campsites.
For DEC land you have a couple of options. Camping at the designated sites is the preferred method but you can camp at non-designated sites as long as they are 1 - at least 150 feet from any trail, road, or water body and 2 - there aren't any yellow "no camping" signs. Also, more than 3 nights at any site or having more than 10 people in your group would require a permit.

Thanks for posting these videos because it has helped in pushing me to get out there. I feel like I get lost in other videos with the thoughts that I need to drop a load of cash on the best gear. With all the day/overnight hikes have you ever had any issues with ticks? I would imagine that's one reason why people try to stick to designated sites.
@@nickrelativity6023 Any time my friend, that is great to hear the videos are helping you out. I know exactly how you feel about the gear. I have definitely spent my fair share of money on gear over the years but I do all I can to get every ounce out of it. I'm still using the same backpacks I was using in 2016, same sleeping bag, same everything now that I think about it. I haven't bought actual "gear" probably since my hiking shoes last April. I do however need to make some upgrades to my sleeping system so I can push further into the Fall season and possibly early Winter.
As for the ticks, I usually always find one or two on me when I'm out but Harriman State Park is on a whole different level. I always seem to come across them in big numbers there but luckily in the past 10 years I've only been bitten by two (no Lyme thankfully). I've become a big supporter of pre-treating my gear with Permethrin.

First off let’s show Joe some support by smashing the like and subscribe buttons. Second this trail is in the top 5 for a Catskills hike or a backpacking trip. Looking at reviews from AllTrails app animal encounters are not as rare at this trail as others so make sure you hang that bear bag and don’t leave anything out with a scent. Thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos Joe and I’m really loving all the Catskills videos this year. Are you planning an overnighter there anytime soon?
I like the way you think! And you are correct, I should have added that although sighting may be semi-rare, still practice safe food storage, etc. Just because you or I don't see one, doesn't mean they aren't there. Thanks for pointing that out. I really appreciate all the kind words, there is no doubt a lot of work goes into these and I'm glad they are of value. Funny you ask about an overnighter up there as I have a couple planned, one possibly with another RUclipsr (if I can make the timing work which I hope I can).
