I can easily see some dealerships marking it upto around 60k or more , it's a shame that even when manufacturers make something "affordable" , it still ends up being unattainable.
You'd be surprised. There are seemingly regular cars that should be affordable that are marked up sometimes twice their proper price. The market here is insane right now thanks to the new car shortage after Covid
@@towcat it's not because of a shortage of cars , poor regulation against predatory dealership practices are to blame . Car production is almost back to pre covid levels for some car companies but it doesn't matter if the dealerships aren't being penalized by the government and the car companies themselves . But companies get to move just as money cars while making it seem like there is a bigger demand due to higher pricing so they don't have any incentive to go after dealerships , it's a vicious cycle where the customer who just wants an econobox to function in their day to day life end up paying 2x retail price so that dealerships and companies have higher profits .
i guess views do dictate what viewers want but this type of content is what i prefer compared to the other stuff Donut has been doing. hope they keep these up i’ll definitely be tuning in.

Awesome car review. Awesome car, when dealerships get their hands on this you know they're going to ruin the affordable price points 🙄 the core alone will probably start at 45 or 50k.... so imagine what the morizo will end up being...
So true. The new Nissan Z car's MSRP was said to start a little over $40K, after TT&L and Dealer BS Market Adjustment it's really more like $75K. Dumb people keep buying them though, so they will keep doing it.
Congrats guys for getting to test one out so soon! Unfortunately, all I see in the near future is ridiculous dealer markups. It's almost pointless to look at the MSRP of something so desirable.
I'd rather manufacturers start fighting back more against dealerships doing this. I recently watched a video of the new proto Z costing above $100k at some dealerships. We as protesting consumers can definitely fight back by not buying the products but until manufacturers start holding dealerships accountable, this problem will never go away. We used to see this primarily with special/bespoke vehicles but MDMs are trickling down to regular cars. Unfortunately, current dealerships are emboldened because while YOU'RE not buying at mark-up, some else is.
You guys are in the rare position that you could actually be the best American "top gear". But content matters. This one reminds us more that you can do it once again. Fun videos are fun but I damn near quit when James just read off a list of cost of cars.

The car is sick and I would totally drive one. But the "affordable" price point is already not actually affordable, and dealers are going to mark them up even higher. The people who actually want this car (younger car enthusiasts) can't afford to buy it. The people that can afford to buy it only care about other sports cars and teslas or big fat trucks. Maybe when this car is 10 years old I'll be able to find one for cheap, or maybe not
@Zynthio Not true at all. Call any Toyota dealership, and there is a LONG wait list for this car. I'd buy one, but can't because I am too far down the wait list and they won't be producing enough to meet demand.
Imagine being a Toyota mechanic and the past few years you’ve had to start working on Subaru engines and now BMW engines. That must kinda suck. If there’s any Toyota techs reading this, does it suck having those platforms around in the shop or is it not bad??
A while later and I was finally able to get a GR Corolla I went with the circuit because it was the only one I could find without a huge mark up or with the locking diffs… I love the the car!
Look at the Australian market man. People already making well over 500whp put of the same engine in the yaris. They explain making power and reliability
E C you would be hard pressed to find any performance car that’s is driven like a performance car making 300k miles without a rebuild. I would say you could maybe pull 200k out of it. That’s with 3-3500 mile oil changes some reliability mods and really staying on top of maintenance. Let’s be honest the average person doesn’t even check their oil in between changes.
@@lucian7182 dude im a gear head and sometimes I FORGET to do that. But yeah if anyone can do it it's them but this will answer an age old question of final reliability vs performance lol or at least give a great data point of performance vs reliability in the most reliable car.
This is one of the first things I thought of as well. On one hand, it's Toyota, so reliability will probably be better than most performance cars, but it's also a performance car, so it'll probably still be less reliable than non-performance Toyotas.
I'd still buy the Core edition since it has so much tuning capability, the other two trims, I'd probably not touch...since I believe their limited in numbers.
What are your thoughts on the tunability of the engine? given that its a small 3 cylinder already running 22 pounds of boost, you think we'll be able to get much more out of it?
@@MattB90 it shares the same motor as the yaris gr and there's plenty of people who are pulling 500hp out of them. I personally don't know how safe that is but you could definetly throw another 80 hp at it and be safe
I’m sure you guys have heard of Gazoo Racing thinking about producing the GR86 with the GR Yaris power plant. I’m curious about how we feel about this.
Can't imagine anyone having a problem with it. The only down side I can really think of is that the turbo 3 cylinder would sit a little higher up than the boxer meaning center of gravity would be a touch higher. I think most people would be okay with that trade off though if it means more power. Not to mention, I trust a Toyota engine to be far more reliable than a Subaru engine. Another plus would be that the Toyota engine is turbo charged, whereas the boxer isn't. It's much easier to add power to an engine that already has forced induction than it is to add forced induction to an NA motor. The GR86/BRZ platform is known for its aftermarket appeal. Giving it an engine that is more easily tunable/modifiable can only be a positive in that regard.

I can easily see some dealerships marking it upto around 60k or more , it's a shame that even when manufacturers make something "affordable" , it still ends up being unattainable.
Dealers have become the exact thing they were created and designed to destroy: crazy mark ups
They’ll mark it up to 80, there’s a dealer in florida marking up the new mavericks 20k
you American markups is still cheaper than the MSRP in parts of Asia. Be thankful you can still shop around to find a non-marked up dealer.
I love this format, it's like the new Top Gear we never got.
i guess views do dictate what viewers want but this type of content is what i prefer compared to the other stuff Donut has been doing. hope they keep these up i’ll definitely be tuning in.
Donut having fun in new cars. That’s a reminder of why I’m a subscriber
Awesome cars, but I can't imagine what the scarcity and insane dealer markup is on these! Dealers are asking $25K over MSRP for Type R Civics and those have at least been in the US market for a few years.
yeah id be interested in trading my 2020 WRX for a core, keep my payments close, but i know they are gonna go full Ford Focus RS on it and slap another 10k on it
@@davidsiepel6774 lol 10k markup?

Okay I’m watching donut again . Idk what’s been going on up in here the last year but this was refreshing finally
For some reason my heart rate jumped when Nolan said "Inside and Out".
Epic video as always

Such a shame this isn’t coming to Australia, but on the other hand we’ve been blessed with the GR Yaris. Which I believe is the homologated WRC Yaris.
Really? quick search online shows news saying there's at least a batch of 500 coming to aus which is admittedly a little underwhelming
They are coming to Aus, my mate is buying one
Australia pretty much gets everything the States or UK don’t get lol we are getting the Gr Corolla
@@Weednwz ah I didn’t realize that. I did see another comment stating there are 500 that will be coming to Oz. They will be so severely priced.
@@EvanDrinkwater Yeh because of stealership
This is the best donut video released in the past few months. It would be cool to see Nolan doing more of these kind of videos, he’s really evolved into a great host! This seems to be his natural element. I know track days can be expensive but even seeing him do a car review on other enthusiasts cars like this or bringing back “miracle whips” (if I remember the show title correctly) with a season for each host would be so enjoyable
now, i LOVE the WRX/STI hatch and have been pretty disappointed they ditched it, in comes toyota to steal the thunder and i literally cant wait for this GR corolla. the corolla is a great size and awd, 6sp manual. giddy up, i cant wait to get one
This is a well written, well produced episode! Keep it up guys! Thank you for this! ❤
The ad segment with jeremiah was also top work too! Welcome back to making great car reviews!
@@ImJustKindaHere it doesn't help, and it's sad.... I saw one selling for 125k and another for 110k
Nolan is my west coast nerd brother and you guys are just jealous.
Glad you enjoyed! Car rocks.
It feels like the "new" The New Car Show and i like the energy Nolan brings throughout this entire episode
Congrats guys for getting to test one out so soon! Unfortunately, all I see in the near future is ridiculous dealer markups. It's almost pointless to look at the MSRP of something so desirable.
Just don’t buy it
Yup. I'd trade in my current Mazda 3 turbo if I could get one of these at MSRP. I know I won't find a base model at MSRP.
My mom works for toyota, and a few years ago to celebrate something at the new headquarters the prez came out and was doing donuts it was sick lmao
As someone working in the restaurant business that was one of the best ad reads I’ve ever seen
You guys are in the rare position that you could actually be the best American "top gear". But content matters. This one reminds us more that you can do it once again. Fun videos are fun but I damn near quit when James just read off a list of cost of cars.
Can’t wait for an inevitable GR Yaris Final Edition featuring the updated pistons and 300hp map from the ‘rolla
As a former cook, that commercial for Shoply just brought back so many memories
The dealership near me was talking about how they were expecting 20k markup for one of these 🙄
I wanna see you guys bring back the series with the Miata where you showed if certain upgrades and mods were worth it and the process of how to change them out. I really like learning the mechanical side of stuff, why it works, how it works, and how to install/remove.

This new GR Corolla looks awesome! Since the US didn't get the GR Yaris, this one would be awesome to have ^^
The performance package for the core edition is only $1,180 and includes the front and rear torsen lsd's and the red fixed caliper brakes.
That's actually a great rice considering the e153 trans lsd is over $1400 for everything included for the swap

More more more. This is the content this channel is truly known for. Nolan Killed it in the episode!
Drove a Morizo today... Believe the hype; Toyota finally nails the enthusiast car even if it isn't that pretty, it ticks all the boxes it should. I like it better than the GR Subaru or the GR BMW

Toyota killing it! Reliable and fun cars
EXACTLY. Killer combination where other cars are fun they don’t offer reliability.
Toyota does it all now
Best episode in a while ! Love seeing Nolan have some fun
This is my dream car right now. Saving pennies for it. I've never, never been so enthusiastic about a new car before in my life.
As long as it’s not a hybrid, I love it.
I'm interested to see if these are gonna be the new "civics". It's a cheap reliable 4 cylinder with a ton of after market support. Can't wait to see people start building these.
They have 3 cylinders
The production numbers are far too low for that I’d imagine. They’re only making about 6600, at least during the first year.
locked ecu probably for a while too
Nah. It's going to be dealer scalped to hell. There also is only a limited run for the first year.
Damn, thanks for sharing some of the knowledge. I didn't know that much about these Because I'm a Honda guy and don't really follow Toyotas. This is one of the only new cars that caught my eye lol
I know Donut has copped some grief lately for quality of content, but this is spot on. Great work guys and especially Nolan, I'm halfway into the episode and thoroughly enjoying it 👌
This car is pretty awesome as long as you dont need to give anyone a ride. The back seats are so damn small.
I mean, that's what you get when you want performance XD, more performance=less comfortable even with Mercedes A45 from comfortable car for its size to a fully uncomfortable but aggressive performance on its AMG trim, only few brands like Bugatti that somehow managed to get both performance and comfort balanced together

Toyota is a fantastic car manufacturer that gives enthusiasts what they really want. I'll always be loyal to Toyota and I hope to own one of these someday.
"I think this thing can be as fast as the driver, meaning you can be someone who's not so good at driving and have a really good time; be someone who's a professional maybe and really ring a lot out of this car... Oh my god that's a camera, camera just flew out of the seatbelt!" -Nolan, Donut Media
The self fulfilling prophecy
I doubt they look at it the way enthusiasts do. To them it's just one more engine to fix as long as they get paid.
I really hope this is the beginning of Donut Media getting themselves back to what we all fell in love it...
A while later and I was finally able to get a GR Corolla I went with the circuit because it was the only one I could find without a huge mark up or with the locking diffs… I love the the car!
Anyone that pays 42k for a Corolla makes bad decisions.
if it can really do high 11's in the 1/4mi for $37k its the best bang for your buck.. (its not gonna be $37k)
what about 80k for a Yaris?
I'm REALLY curious to see how reliability is at this power level... That's a lot to squeeze out of such a little motor
Look at the Australian market man. People already making well over 500whp put of the same engine in the yaris. They explain making power and reliability
@@danbufford8848 are they still getting 300k miles out of them?????!!!!!! That would be crazy!

Giving it an engine that is more easily tunable/modifiable can only be a positive in that regard.
then if it happens that would be my new car, in japan they already mod the 3 cyl to 400-500 HP
They aren't bring it to consumers. Its only them testing it for racecars.
@@benaiahdavis8870 I'm fairly sure it's for testing sustainable fuels, isn't it?
