My favorite thing is when Instagram "surf instructors" tell you incorrectly to look down the line when you're taking off. Gerr demonstrates that looking down to stomp first, and then looking down the line is the best, coolest-looking way to drop in. Helped me so much in the Ments.
What about kicking? Much better surfers always tell me to kick, but I don't feel any propulsion coming from my legs. And it interferes in my paddling. Maybe it works if you have a smaller volume board which is submerged when not planing? If anyone has thoughts I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
depends on the wave, if its a wave where you're at the very top of the lip, and need to get ahead of a section, kicking ur legs can work. but honestly Kicking isnt worth trying to get good at, if you've got really good paddling form and have good positioning its not worth it. also depends on ur board, cant be kicking ur legs on a big board.
I’ve been told that it breaks the surface tension of the wave behind you and allows you to ‘get into the wave’ better. I’ve noticed it helps on my high volume boards.
best advice for surfing is to learn how to skateboard first. you can practice on your street, how to balance and carve on the board. if you have a bank then it simulates a wave. and please don't buy a foam board... that wont get you anywhere. buy a cheap board on cragislist, like a fish or anything that has thickness because it will be hard to balance your weight in the beginning. Then practice in the white wash. 100% no one ever talks like this for helping people to surf
@@wavekidojo8037 Any surfer in love with surfing, knows how to paddle... It's pretty simple and straightforward mate. Attempting to turn it into some complex situation.. in order to make some cash, is lame as Fark...
@jason Dude! What are you talking about? Paddling, especially on take -offs is super involved with technique... Brad isn't even going into depth on his vast knowledge... which varies on wave locations, size and complexity. Your disrespectful response shows how ignorant you are... I'd love to see you paddle into 6-8' top to bottom surf... or rather your feet sticking out going over the falls...
@@doscoronitas Oh Jesus El Toro...if you need advice on simply paddling and taking off on a wave, you have a potato for a brain ,and are better off playing tennis or whatever else.. Heres some advice.. See wave coming, paddle, catch wave..Surf..It aint that complex mate..
Agree to disagree...Please post pics...not 1' slop... would love to see your drop in at 8' reef break... paddle and no paddle take offs please. His video addresses minor adjustments which look like only experienced surfers can appreciate. Stay off the potatoes... 🛋 🥔
He’s actually a step beyond what’s considered good technique. Beginners shouldn’t do what he is doing. His head is looking down while taking the drop, then he looks up. Super casual and relaxed. This would be too late for a beginner. Beginners need to keep the head up and looking down the line or they will most likely end up at the bottom of the wave.
What you do with your head in relation to the board is totally dependent upon your positioning for the wave and what the wave has to offer. It just takes time in the water and learning to read waves. I’m in Florida and I promise you learning to read waves is the most crucial piece to clean take offs.
This is a paddling tip for surfers that ride short boards. Do I need to state the obvious that beginners don't ride short boards? And if I were to learn all over again I would do exactly the opposite of what you are saying is "considered good technique", even though it seems to be common knowledge amongst the majority surf teachers I have seen out there. I would learn to look down at the nose of my board with a soft focus of a foot or two in front of it from the very first day, so that when I started to ride shorter boards I would already have this good habit ingrained. This would help me make most of my drops, making my learning trajectory faster than anyone looking up and too far down the line.
Why would you ever look down the line, Use your peripheral vision to see down the line, keep your head straight. Looking down the line means you’re trying to pop up with a twisted neck.
Awesome thanks 👏

Love the short vids, very refreshing.
Thanks for keeping us inspired and evolving, really grateful for any tip with the great vibe u put into it... Aloha Brad!
My pleasure, thanks for the nice words 🤙
I will never be Brad Gerlach but I've been using this technique of paddling further up on the board to catch a wave for a long time now!
Really good information - Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
That's some good technique right there.

stoked to hear that.

heard that kicking can give you a little extra but not that much. I try not to but occasionally do if the wave is hard to catch.

Kick only in emergencies, as in when you are not getting into the wave and need turbo boost on a short board. 5 quick little kicks.
🙏
yeah guy
This wave in CA?
👍
Wup wup wup wup boom
Did I see a kick? I remember as a grom was told never to kick
When you get it right you don't need to paddle at all.
Use to work for me looong ago...
Seems like that’s what happened to the guy in the last wave of the video, there was no paddling there, straight up positioning
@@EriczSURF he's close but still took 2 strokes to get into it. Still better than most !
